A service licensed in one territory may not have the rights to show the same match where you are. To find an authorized stream, check the competition’s official broadcaster listing for your country and season, then confirm the broadcaster’s match schedule and terms.
Why are sports streams geo-blocked?
Sports organizers and other rights-holders license broadcasts within defined limits. Those limits may specify a territory, a period, the type of coverage—such as live matches or highlights—or the platform and package. A streaming service must stay within the permissions it has been granted, so a stream available in one country may be unavailable in another.

UEFA’s statutes describe its and its member associations’ exclusive rights to broadcast or authorize the broadcast of matches within their jurisdiction. The exact rights arrangement depends on the competition and its rules; there is no single worldwide sports-streaming licence that automatically covers every match everywhere. How do broadcast rights work?
A competition organizer or another authorized rights-holder grants broadcasters permission to show specified content. The resulting licence can define where and when it applies, what coverage is included, and which outlets or platforms may carry it. Rights may be divided into packages and assigned to different partners in different territories.

Example: Premier League packages and territory partners
The Premier League says its live audiovisual rights are sold collectively in three-season packages through an auction process, rather than individually by clubs. It also identifies rights partners in different areas. Its announcement published on 13 May 2025 lists partners for the 2025/26–2027/28 cycle. Example: UEFA competition rights
UEFA’s 2026/27 Champions League rules state that UEFA is the exclusive owner of the competition’s commercial rights and exploits its media rights subject to the rules’ stated exceptions. The 2026/27 Europa League rules illustrate a more conditional arrangement: clubs may exploit certain live rights in an EU/EEA country only where a UEFA media partner has not acquired those rights, and transmissions must not spill beyond the territories authorized by the rules. How does a streaming service know where you are?
Services may use location technology to determine the territory from which a viewer is accessing content. UEFA.tv’s terms say that content availability is subject to territorial restrictions imposed by UEFA or a content partner, and that UEFA uses technologies to determine geographic location. Its terms also prohibit techniques intended to obscure or manipulate the user’s location. UEFA.tv’s terms separately note that availability can depend on device capabilities and internet connection. A device or connectivity problem is distinct from a territory restriction, even if both can result in a stream failing to play.

Why might a match be unavailable even in the right country?
Not every gap in live coverage is caused by an account, device, or location check. A competition or country may have a scheduled broadcast restriction. For example, the Premier League says that football matches may not be broadcast live in the UK during the Saturday closed period of 14:45–17:15, which it describes as designated by the Football Association under UEFA Article 48. How to find the authorized stream for a match
- Identify the competition and country. Start at the competition’s official broadcast page and select the country where you are watching; rights partners can differ by territory. Premier League broadcast FAQ
- Check the season or rights cycle. Broadcaster lists change when licences expire or are renewed. For example, the Premier League announcement published on 13 May 2025 covers 2025/26–2027/28. Premier League rights announcement for 2025/26–2027/28
- Confirm that the service carries this match and type of coverage. Check the broadcaster’s own schedule and terms for the specific event, live coverage versus highlights, subscription requirements, and supported platforms. An official partner listing alone does not establish that every match is included in every offer.
- Separate location limits from other playback problems. If the stream is listed for your territory, check the service’s device and connection requirements and whether a scheduled blackout applies.
- Ask the local broadcaster if the listing is unclear. Follow the service’s terms rather than trying to obscure or manipulate your location; UEFA.tv expressly prohibits that conduct in its terms. Other services may have their own restrictions, and the applicable rules can vary.
What geo-blocking does—and does not—tell you
A geo-block indicates that the service is restricting access based on territory, but it does not by itself explain every legal or contractual reason for that restriction. Legal questions can depend on the specific licence, jurisdiction, and circumstances.
