How to Use ChatGPT Search and Citations to Verify Answers

Open ChatGPT citations and verify that the linked pages support the exact claims, are current, and come from suitable sources.

To check an answer in ChatGPT, open its citations, read the linked pages, and confirm that each source supports the specific claim it accompanies. A citation is a starting point for verification—not proof that a claim is correct.

How to start a web search in ChatGPT

ChatGPT may search the web automatically when a question would benefit from current information. To start a search yourself, open a conversation, select View all tools, choose Search, then enter and send your question. You can also type / in the composer and select Search. These are the controls described in OpenAI’s Searching the web with ChatGPT help page; interface labels can change.

Make the question checkable

State the detail that would change the answer: for example, the country or jurisdiction, the date, the organization, or the software version. A focused question makes it easier to judge whether the answer and its sources address the issue you actually asked about.

How to open and inspect citations

After ChatGPT responds, select a citation to open the linked source. On desktop web, hovering over a citation can show a preview. If the Sources control appears, open it to review cited sources and related links. The available controls may vary by interface.

Read the page itself rather than relying on a citation preview or the answer’s summary. Check who published it and when it was published or updated. For an important claim, look for a source with direct knowledge of the subject, such as an official agency for a rule or an organization’s own documentation for its product.

How to tell whether a citation supports the answer

Check each consequential claim against its cited page. A source may be relevant to the general topic without proving the exact sentence ChatGPT attached it to. Compare the answer and source on these points:

  • Directness: Does the page state or demonstrate the specific claim, or does it only discuss a related subject?
  • Authority: Is the publisher in a position to know? Prefer an authoritative primary source when the claim matters.
  • Date and version: Is the information current for the date, jurisdiction, product, or version in the question?
  • Scope: Does the source support the full wording, including any conditions or exceptions, or only a narrower point?

OpenAI warns that “Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.” A linked page therefore needs to be checked for both relevance and accuracy; its presence alone does not validate the answer.

When to verify outside ChatGPT

For important quotations, figures, technical details, or references, open the original material and verify it directly. OpenAI notes that ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading information, including fabricated quotations, studies, citations, and references, and advises: “Use ChatGPT as a first draft, not a final source.” If a cited page does not support a claim, treat the claim as unverified and look for a reliable source before relying on it.

If Search is missing or unavailable

Try these checks in order:

  1. Start a new conversation and check View all tools for Search.
  2. Update the ChatGPT app, or try ChatGPT on chatgpt.com.
  3. Check that you are using the intended account or workspace, and whether you have reached a plan usage limit.
  4. If you are using a managed workspace, ask its administrator whether Search is enabled for your role.

OpenAI’s help page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists web Search for Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans, and says it is also available to people who are not signed in. Searches are subject to plan usage limits, and some features have additional eligibility requirements. Availability and controls can change, so the current help page is the best place to check account-specific details.

Web Search is not the same as searching your ChatGPT history

ChatGPT web Search retrieves information from the web. The separate search in the sidebar helps locate existing conversations, projects, and files in your ChatGPT account. If you want current information or sources outside your account, choose Search from the conversation tools rather than the sidebar search.
