To use ChatGPT more safely on a Mac, limit what you submit, choose the right chat and data settings, review the app’s macOS permissions, and check where connected services send information. These controls do different jobs: ChatGPT settings affect how submitted information is handled by the service, while macOS permissions govern local access to files, the screen, camera, or microphone. Neither makes every prompt private, so share only what you need to.
Start by limiting what you share
Treat a prompt, screenshot, or uploaded file as information you are deliberately sending to an online service. Do not include passwords, authentication codes, private keys, confidential work documents, or other sensitive information unless you are authorized to share it and have a clear need. Before uploading a document or screenshot, redact unrelated names, account details, and secrets.

In the ChatGPT macOS app, screenshots are treated as file uploads, and uploads are stored in the cloud and tied to your OpenAI account. OpenAI says the app’s conversations, screenshots, and files follow the same retention policies as ChatGPT on the web. OpenAI’s macOS app retention guidance explains the handling; it does not mean every kind of information is inherently unsafe to submit.
Stop new conversations from being used to improve models
On a personal account, turn off Improve the model for everyone if you do not want new conversations used to improve OpenAI models. In ChatGPT, open the account menu and go to Settings > Data controls, switch the setting off, and confirm if prompted. The choice applies across devices when you are signed in. OpenAI’s Data Controls help page describes the setting and notes that available controls can vary by plan and workspace.

This is a data-use choice, not a history or deletion control: ordinary conversations may still appear in chat history. OpenAI says individual users’ content may be used to improve model performance depending on their settings. Content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare workspaces and the API Platform is not used for training by default, but managed-workspace administrators may control retention and access. Use Temporary Chat when you do not want a conversation in normal history
In the macOS app, click the model name at the top and choose the Temporary Chat toggle. Check for the temporary banner or another in-window indication that it is active before entering sensitive context. OpenAI says temporary conversations do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while they remain temporary. Check personalization before you begin
Temporary does not necessarily mean unpersonalized. If personalization is selected at the start, an exchange may still draw on existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins. For a blank slate, choose non-personalized mode when starting the temporary chat. Saving a temporary chat converts it into a regular chat in your history, where ordinary account settings apply.

Review the Mac app’s local permissions
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security. Review the categories relevant to features you use; labels can vary by macOS version, so use the closest matching category shown on your Mac.
- Files & Folders: Check access to Desktop, Documents, Downloads, and any other listed locations.
- Screen & System Audio Recording: Review access used for screenshots or recording features.
- Camera and Microphone: Check these if you use features that need them.
Approve a permission only when it makes sense for a feature you intend to use, and revisit the list later. Apple explains how to manage these controls in its Privacy & Security settings guide and its guide to screen and system audio recording access. If you allow a third party to access screen or audio data, Apple says that information is governed by that provider’s terms and privacy policies.

Know which ChatGPT route you are using
Using ChatGPT through an Apple integration without signing in to a ChatGPT account is different from linking your account. OpenAI says unauthenticated requests through Apple integrations are not logged with your IP address, stored, or used for model training. OpenAI processes them to provide a response and comply with applicable laws. If you link a ChatGPT account, your account preferences apply and interactions may be saved in chat history; additional account details are made available on device for the connection. Check connected apps and GPT actions
A connected app or a GPT action can introduce another recipient for information. Connected-app permissions govern when ChatGPT asks before using access you have already granted; they do not themselves create new access. Data shared with a connected service is subject to that provider’s terms and privacy practices. Connect only accounts you need, read each consent screen, and disconnect access you no longer want. Download the app from an official source
Use OpenAI’s official download route or the official Mac App Store listing where applicable. Apple says Gatekeeper checks software downloaded from outside the App Store for an identified developer, Apple notarization, and signs of alteration. These checks reduce risk; they are not a guarantee that software is perfectly safe. Do not bypass a macOS security warning to install an app from an unfamiliar download mirror.
