Turn off model-improvement use for your account, use Temporary Chat or Incognito for one-off sensitive work, remove identifying details before you paste, and treat feedback, files, memories, connected tools, and workspaces as separate data paths. Neither service promises that a temporary mode is anonymous or erased immediately.
What “more private” means in practice
ChatGPT and Claude expose several controls that answer different questions:

- Can future conversations improve models? This is controlled by a model-improvement or model-training setting.
- Will I see the conversation in my history? Temporary Chat and Incognito address this for one-off sessions.
- Will the assistant remember details? Memory and personalization controls are separate from model training.
- What happens to a deleted chat or uploaded file? Deletion schedules and file libraries can be separate from the visible conversation.
- Can people or systems review the content? Safety review, feedback programs, connected tools, administrators, legal obligations, and security retention can create exceptions.
A privacy-conscious workflow therefore has three stages: check whether the account is approved for the material, minimize what you send, and choose the least persistent mode that still lets you complete the task.

1. Confirm that the account is allowed
For a personal account, read the current privacy and data-control settings. For a company, school, or other managed account, consult the organization’s policy and administrator first. Managed workspaces can have different defaults, retention rules, access controls, and administrator-enforced settings. A user-level toggle may not override those rules.

Do not assume that a personal setting carries over to an organization account, or that a consumer help article describes a commercial or enterprise service. Plan, workspace, region, and administrator policies can change which controls are available.
2. Minimize the prompt
Send the smallest excerpt that answers the question. Remove names, addresses, account numbers, customer identifiers, private URLs, internal project names, and unnecessary dates. Replace a person’s name with a neutral label such as Client A. Redaction lowers exposure but does not make the content anonymous: unusual wording, dates, and combinations of facts can still identify a person or organization.
3. Keep secrets out entirely
- Never paste passwords, one-time authentication codes, private keys, recovery codes, or active session tokens.
- Do not paste an entire customer database when a few synthetic or redacted rows will demonstrate the problem.
- For code, remove credentials from configuration files and replace them with placeholders such as
API_KEY_REDACTED. - For documents, quote only the paragraphs needed for analysis instead of uploading the whole file.
4. Treat uploads as a separate decision
A file can have storage behavior independent of the chat that references it. Before uploading, check whether the service stores files in a Library or another account area. If you later delete the conversation, inspect that separate location and remove the file there as well.
ChatGPT: settings and a safe one-off workflow
Turn off model improvement for a personal account
- Open Settings.
- Choose Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI describes the result this way: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” When you are signed in, the setting applies to the account across devices. It does not delete conversations already saved in your history, so history cleanup is a separate step.
This control is for new personal-account conversations. It is not a promise that no human or automated system can ever access content: safety, security, legal, account-support, and feedback processes can have their own handling rules.

Use Temporary Chat for a one-off session
Choose Temporary Chat when you do not want a conversation in the normal history or want it excluded from model improvement while it remains temporary. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history and do not create or update memories. They may nevertheless be kept for up to 30 days for safety purposes. That is a maximum stated safety-retention period, not a promise that every copy disappears instantly at the end of the session.
Temporary Chat also needs a personalization check. If you do not want the response shaped by existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins, leave personalization features off for that session. Temporary Chat defaults to no plugins, but a personalized temporary chat can use them. A connected tool may have its own data flow and retention policy.

Do not save a Temporary Chat by accident
Saving a Temporary Chat converts it into a regular chat. Once saved, it is subject to the ordinary account settings and history behavior. If the purpose of the session was to keep it temporary, leave it unsaved and copy out only the minimum result you need.
Delete a saved chat correctly
For a saved conversation you no longer need, use the chat’s delete command rather than merely archiving it. Archiving changes presentation; it does not remove the conversation. OpenAI says deleted chats are scheduled for permanent removal within 30 days, subject to exceptions such as de-identification and security or legal retention.
Deletion of the conversation does not automatically prove that every related object is gone. If you uploaded a file that was saved separately in the Library, delete that file from the Library as well. Also review saved memories or other personalization entries independently; chat history and memory are distinct controls.

Understand feedback as an opt-in exception
Submitting a thumbs-up or thumbs-down can change the data treatment of the associated conversation. OpenAI says feedback may make that conversation usable for training even if you previously opted out of model improvement. Do not submit feedback on a sensitive exchange unless you accept that exception.

Turning off model improvement does not by itself erase or disable memory. Memory controls affect personalization, while model-improvement controls govern a different use. Review the memory panel and remove individual saved items you no longer want retained. Check connected apps, plugins, or other integrations one by one; their permissions and retention may not match ChatGPT’s chat-history setting.
Claude: privacy settings and Incognito chat
Disable future model improvement
- Open Claude’s Privacy settings.
- Find the model-improvement or model-training choice.
- Turn it off, then save the setting if the interface asks you to confirm.
Anthropic states: “If you decide to turn off the model training setting, we will not use any new chats and coding sessions you have with Claude for future model training.” This is a forward-looking control. It does not function as a deletion command for earlier conversations.
Use Incognito chat for a one-off conversation
Start an Incognito chat when you do not want the conversation in normal chat history or used to improve Claude. Anthropic says, “Your Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your Privacy Settings.” The setting therefore provides a separate one-off safeguard in addition to the account-wide choice.
Incognito is not immediate deletion. Anthropic’s Help Center says Incognito chats are retained for 30 days by default. Enterprise customers may have a longer custom retention period. The absence of a chat from the visible history should not be interpreted as proof that no service copy exists.

Handle feedback and safety review as different paths
Anthropic says conversations flagged for safety review may be analyzed to enforce its Usage Policy, including work on training safeguards models. That review path is separate from the normal model-improvement switch.
Feedback has another stated exception. Anthropic’s consumer guidance says a feedback-related conversation may be retained for up to five years and may be used for service analysis, research, study of user behavior, and model training as permitted by law. Avoid sending feedback on a conversation that contains information you do not want handled under those terms.
Be precise about connected sources
Anthropic’s cited training guidance says raw content from connected sources is not included in the described model-improvement data unless you copy that content directly into the conversation. This is a narrow statement about the specified training use, not a blanket promise about every processing, access, or retention purpose. Apply the same minimization rule to connected-source results: retrieve only what you need and avoid copying sensitive material into the chat.

These controls do not make one service categorically private. They address different stages of the data lifecycle, and the strongest choice depends on whether you need an ongoing account preference, a one-off session, file handling, or organization-level compliance.
What to do after a sensitive conversation
- Delete the saved chat if you no longer need it. Use the service’s delete action, not archive.
- Inspect file storage such as a Library and remove separately saved uploads.
- Review memory and personalization and remove entries that should not remain available to future conversations.
- Check feedback before submitting it. Feedback can invoke retention or training exceptions described above.
- Review connected tools and revoke access you no longer need.
- Recheck the account context after changing plans, joining a workspace, or moving between personal and managed accounts.
Retention periods describe the service’s scheduled handling, not necessarily instantaneous disappearance from every backup, security record, legal hold, or separately stored object. If your organization requires a particular deletion deadline or geographic handling rule, obtain confirmation from its administrator rather than relying on a consumer setting.
A practical decision tree
Use an ordinary chat when
- The material is low sensitivity or already public.
- You have confirmed the account’s model-improvement setting and workspace policy.
- You need the conversation to remain available in history.
Use Temporary Chat or Incognito when
- You need a one-off answer and do not want normal history entry.
- You have removed direct identifiers and secrets.
- You understand that the mode still allows a limited retention period and safety or policy review.
Do not enter the material when
- Your employer, school, client, or regulator has not approved the service.
- The task requires passwords, private keys, authentication codes, or complete confidential records.
- You cannot accept the service’s retention, feedback, safety-review, or administrator-access terms.
Common mistakes and their fixes
“I turned off training, so my old chats are gone.”
Training control and deletion are separate. Turn off the setting for future conversations, then delete old chats and separately stored files you no longer need.
“Temporary or Incognito means zero retention.”
Both vendors describe limited retention: up to 30 days for ChatGPT Temporary Chat and 30 days by default for Claude Incognito, with possible Enterprise customization for Claude. Treat these modes as reduced history and model-improvement exposure, not instant erasure.
“Deleting the chat removes every memory.”
Memory and chat history use separate controls. Review saved memories or personalization entries directly.
“A thumbs-down is harmless.”
Feedback can create a special handling path. ChatGPT may use the associated conversation for training after opt-out; Claude may retain feedback-related conversations for up to five years and use them for specified purposes.
“The organization account has the same switches as my personal account.”
Managed workspaces can override or limit user choices. Read the organization policy and ask the administrator which settings and retention rules apply.
Bottom line for a private-by-default workflow
Before you paste, minimize and redact. For ChatGPT, turn off Settings > Data controls > Improve the model for everyone; for Claude, disable model improvement in Privacy settings. Use Temporary Chat or Incognito for a one-off session, but remember the stated 30-day retention caveats. Do not save a temporary session, do not send feedback on sensitive content, and delete chats, memories, and separately stored files through their own controls. For work or school information, the administrator’s policy is the final authority.
