How to Set Up a Bluetooth Controller for Gaming on an Android Tablet

Follow the Android pairing path, verify gamepad settings, and troubleshoot the difference between a Bluetooth connection and actual support in your game.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To connect a Bluetooth game controller to an Android tablet, put the controller into its Bluetooth pairing mode, then open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device and select the controller. Once Android reports that it is connected, check the available game-controller settings and test the controls in the game you intend to play.

Pairing creates the Bluetooth link; it does not guarantee that every game accepts gamepad input or that every controller works with every tablet. The exact Android wording can vary by tablet maker and Android version, so use the labels shown on your device.

What you need before pairing

The setup is straightforward, but three separate compatibility questions determine whether you will actually be able to play:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Controller radio: The controller must support Bluetooth pairing. Its manual should identify the button combination that starts pairing mode.
  • Tablet support: The tablet must have working Bluetooth, or a compatible port and cable if you choose a wired connection.
  • Game support: The individual game must accept Android gamepad input. Android can connect a controller even when a particular game does not respond to it.

Keep the controller’s manual nearby. Pairing, reset and mode-switch button combinations are not universal. Do not assume that a sequence used by one controller will work on another.

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

It also helps to decide which device you are testing before you begin. A controller can remember several hosts, but it can normally exchange data with only the active host at a time. If it was recently used with a phone, computer or console, switch it to the mode intended for a new Bluetooth connection according to the manual. Simply powering it on is not always the same as making it discoverable.

Pair a Bluetooth controller with your Android tablet

  1. Put the controller in pairing mode

Use the controller’s manual to start Bluetooth pairing mode. A light or on-screen indicator may show that it is discoverable, but the exact signal depends on the controller. If the controller is already connected to another device, the manual may require you to disconnect it or switch modes before it can appear to the tablet.

Keep the controller close to the tablet while pairing and leave it in that mode until Android lists it. If the indicator stops or changes before you select the device, restart the controller-specific pairing procedure rather than repeatedly tapping the tablet’s search button.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Open Android Settings

Open the tablet’s Settings app. The documented Android route is Connected devices > Pair new device. Some manufacturers rename or rearrange these entries, so look for the Bluetooth or connected-device area if those exact words are not present.

  3. Start a device search

Tap Pair new device. Android displays nearby Bluetooth devices that are available for pairing. Leave the controller in pairing mode while the list is being populated; leaving that mode can make the controller disappear before you select it.

Read the names in the list carefully if several accessories are nearby. Select the entry that matches the controller’s manual or label. Do not pair a similarly named speaker, keyboard or another controller by mistake.

  4. Select the controller

Tap the controller’s name in the list of available devices. Follow any confirmation prompt shown by Android. If a code or approval request appears, use the instructions supplied with the controller rather than guessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  5. Wait for the paired status

When Android finishes, the controller should appear as a paired or connected device. This means the tablet has established the Bluetooth relationship; it does not mean that a game has enabled controller input.

Confirm the connection and change controller settings

After pairing, return to the connected-device list and select the controller. Android’s general Bluetooth guidance allows a saved device to be selected for reconnection whenever Bluetooth is on. If the controller is listed but not currently connected, tap it to reconnect.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

For supported controllers and tablet software, Android Help places gamepad options at Settings > Connected devices > [controller] > Game Controller settings. The available controls can include remapping buttons and swapping the left and right joystick assignments. These options are not guaranteed on every tablet, Android build or controller, so the absence of the menu is not necessarily a pairing failure.

When to remap controls

  • Use button remapping when a game’s on-screen instructions do not match the physical labels you prefer.
  • Swap joystick assignments only when the game or your play style requires it; changing the system mapping affects how supported games interpret those controls.
  • Make one change at a time and test it in the target game, so you can identify which setting changed the behavior.

Write down the original assignment before experimenting if you are unsure which layout the game expects. If a later game behaves strangely, return to the controller entry and restore the previous mapping before troubleshooting Bluetooth again. A mapping option that is unavailable simply means that this tablet and software combination does not expose that feature; it does not indicate that the controller failed to pair.

Test the controller in the game you actually want to play

Open the intended game only after Android shows the controller as connected. Look in the game’s own settings for a controller, gamepad or input option, then try the buttons and both sticks in a menu or a safe practice area.

Check more than one input: a working directional pad does not prove that the sticks, triggers or menu buttons are supported. Some games require you to enable a gamepad option before they read it, while others implement touch input only. Follow the game publisher’s support information for its supported input layouts.

A successful Bluetooth pairing is not certification that every game supports that controller. Games choose which input methods they implement, and support can differ between games even on the same tablet. If Android sees the controller but the game ignores it, check the game’s support information and any in-game input toggle before changing the Bluetooth pairing.

The general Android setup guidance does not certify particular controller models, tablet models or individual games. Treat compatibility as a combination of the three parts above rather than as a single “paired” or “not paired” status.

Understand paired, saved and connected

Android may show a controller as saved or paired even when it is not exchanging data at this moment. Pairing means the tablet remembers the relationship. Connected means the controller is currently linked and available to apps. A saved device can therefore be visible in the list while the controller is switched off or connected to a different host.

Use the device entry to reconnect, then wait for the status to change before launching the game. If it changes back to saved immediately, the controller may still be in another connection mode or may have selected a different remembered host. The controller manual, not a universal Android button sequence, determines how those modes are changed.

If the controller does not appear in the pairing list

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled on the tablet.
  2. Put the controller back into its specific Bluetooth pairing mode using the manual. A controller that is merely powered on may not be discoverable.
  3. Keep the controller in pairing mode while you open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device and wait for the list to refresh.
  4. If the controller was previously paired, look in the tablet’s saved or paired-device list and select it to reconnect instead of creating a new pairing.
  5. If it still does not appear, follow the controller’s manual for its reset or mode-selection procedure. Android’s general help does not provide a universal controller reset sequence.

Do not infer from a missing name that the tablet lacks controller support. The more common boundary is that the controller is not in discoverable mode, is still attached to another host, or needs its own reset procedure.

If the device list contains a stale entry but no active connection, opening that entry may offer a reconnect command. If reconnection fails repeatedly, use the tablet’s forget or remove command, then put the controller into pairing mode and add it again. Forgetting removes the tablet’s saved relationship; it does not substitute for a controller-specific reset when the controller is advertising the wrong mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Android says connected but the game ignores the controls

Separate the Android connection from the game’s input support:

  • Return to Settings > Connected devices and verify that the controller remains connected.
  • Open the controller entry and, where available, review Game Controller settings to confirm that an unintended button or joystick mapping was not selected.
  • Check the game’s documentation or settings for Android controller support. The game may support touch input only, or it may support only certain input layouts.
  • Try another game that explicitly documents controller input. This can help distinguish a game-specific limitation from a tablet or controller connection problem, but it does not prove that every other game will work.

There is no universal Android setting that forces a non-compatible game to accept gamepad commands. If the game does not implement controller input, pairing alone cannot add that feature.

Test while the game is open and focused. If Android remains connected but only one title ignores input, treat that as a game-support question first. If no controller-supporting title responds, recheck the connection status and any available mapping menu before deleting the pairing.

Reconnect a controller you have already paired

Pairing normally creates a saved relationship between the tablet and controller. For a later session:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn on Bluetooth on the tablet.
  2. Power on the controller and use its normal connection mode.
  3. Open the saved-device area under Settings > Connected devices.
  4. Select the controller to reconnect it if Android does not do so automatically.
  5. Check the controller’s status before launching the game.

The controller can be paired without being actively connected. “Saved” or “paired” identifies the remembered relationship; “connected” indicates that the devices are exchanging data now.

Forget the pairing and start again

Use a fresh pairing when the saved relationship is wrong, the controller repeatedly fails to reconnect, or you need to change which tablet owns the active connection. In the tablet’s connected-device or Bluetooth list, open the controller’s device options and choose the command to forget or remove it. Then put the controller into pairing mode and repeat the documented flow: Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, followed by selecting the controller.

The exact forget command can have a different label or location on a manufacturer’s Android build. Removing the saved entry affects the tablet’s remembered connection; it does not replace the controller’s own reset instructions. If the controller continues to advertise an unexpected mode, consult its manual.

Android version and menu differences

Android’s settings are not visually identical on every tablet. Manufacturers can change menu names and placement, and some Bluetooth guidance applies only to Android 15 devices with supported hardware. Use the current labels on your tablet rather than treating one screenshot or path as universal.

The stable concept is the same: open the device’s connected-device or Bluetooth settings, choose the command for adding a new device, and select the controller while it is discoverable. If a feature such as game-controller remapping is missing, that may reflect the tablet’s Android build or hardware support rather than a failed Bluetooth link.

Bluetooth versus a wired controller

Google Android Help states that a game controller can connect “using either a wired connection or Bluetooth.” A wired setup can be useful when you want to avoid wireless pairing, but it introduces its own compatibility check: the cable and any adapter must fit both the controller and the tablet.

Consideration Bluetooth connection Wired connection
Connection process Put the controller in its controller-specific pairing mode, then use Android’s pair-new-device flow. Connect with a cable that is compatible with both the controller and tablet; Android’s guidance does not specify one universal cable or adapter.
Repeat sessions A saved controller can be selected from paired devices to reconnect when Bluetooth is on. Reconnect by plugging in the compatible cable; port and adapter fit determine whether this is possible.
Configuration Supported tablets may expose button and left/right joystick remapping in Game Controller settings. Controller settings and game support still determine whether inputs are recognized; the cable does not make an unsupported game compatible.
Main selection check Confirm Android and game compatibility, and learn the controller’s pairing procedure. Confirm Android and game compatibility plus the controller port, tablet port and any required adapter.

Choose the connection method that fits the tablet’s ports and the controller’s documented capabilities. Android supports both routes in principle, but neither route guarantees support in a particular game.

There is no single cable recommendation that fits every setup. Identify the connector on the controller, the port on the tablet and whether the controller manual calls for an adapter. A cable that physically fits is not automatically confirmed as compatible, so check both devices’ documentation before relying on wired play.

How to choose a controller for an Android tablet

If you have not bought a controller yet, evaluate the combination rather than choosing on the word “Bluetooth” alone:

  • Android compatibility: Look for explicit compatibility with Android and the tablet’s connection method.
  • Game compatibility: Check the games you intend to play. A controller can pair correctly while a game declines to read it.
  • Pairing procedure: Make sure the manual explains how to enter pairing mode, switch connection modes and reset the device if needed.
  • Remapping support: If button or joystick reassignment matters, confirm that the tablet exposes Game Controller settings for the controller.
  • Port fit for wired use: For a cable fallback, identify both connector types and whether an adapter is required. There is no single cable that fits every tablet and controller.

These checks prevent a common mistake: treating a controller’s wireless specification as proof that a specific Android game and tablet combination will work. A generic Bluetooth game controller compatible with Android is the relevant category for a purchase; verify the particular model and intended games before buying.

A compact setup checklist

  • Controller manual available for its pairing and reset sequence.
  • Tablet Bluetooth switched on.
  • Controller actively in Bluetooth pairing mode.
  • Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device opened on the tablet, or the equivalent labels on that Android build.
  • Correct controller selected from the available-device list.
  • Controller shown as connected, not merely saved.
  • Game Controller settings reviewed when the menu is available.
  • Target game checked for controller support and tested with actual buttons and sticks.

What the pairing result tells you

If the controller appears as connected, the Bluetooth portion of setup has succeeded. If it is absent, focus first on discoverability and the controller’s own pairing procedure. If it is connected but one game does nothing, focus on that game’s controller support and the tablet’s available mapping options. Keeping those stages separate makes troubleshooting faster and avoids repeatedly deleting a pairing that Android has already completed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the exact Android path for pairing?

Google Android Help documents Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, followed by selecting the controller. Tablet manufacturers can use different labels, so open the Bluetooth or connected-device section if the wording is not identical.

Why does my controller not show up?

Make sure it is in its controller-specific Bluetooth pairing mode, not merely powered on. Keep it discoverable while the tablet searches. If it was paired before, try the saved-device entry; otherwise follow the manual’s reset or mode-selection instructions. Android does not define one universal reset sequence for every controller.

Does “paired” mean the game will work?

No. Paired means Android remembers the Bluetooth relationship. Connected means the devices are linked now. The game must separately implement Android gamepad input, and support can differ by title.

Can I remap buttons on Android?

On supported tablets and controllers, open the controller entry at Settings > Connected devices > [controller] > Game Controller settings. Android may let you swap button assignments or left and right joystick assignments. The menu is not available on every Android build or device.

Should I forget the controller and pair it again?

Do so when the saved relationship is incorrect or repeated reconnection fails. Use the controller’s device options to forget or remove it, then repeat the pairing flow. Forgetting affects the tablet’s saved entry; it does not replace a controller-specific reset procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a cable instead?

Yes, Android Help supports a wired controller connection with a compatible cable. The correct cable or adapter depends on the controller and tablet ports, and a wired connection still does not make an unsupported game accept gamepad input.

Why is the Game Controller settings menu missing?

Android’s feature availability depends on the tablet’s software, Android version and hardware support. Some guidance applies only to Android 15 and supported hardware. A missing remapping menu is therefore not proof that Bluetooth pairing failed.

How can I tell whether the game or the tablet is the problem?

First verify that Android still shows the controller as connected and review any available mapping. Then test a different game that explicitly documents controller input. If that title works, the original game is likely the limiting factor; if none respond, recheck the controller connection and compatibility information.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the exact Android path for pairing?

Open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, then select the controller. Menu names may differ on your tablet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my controller not appear?

Put it into its model-specific Bluetooth pairing mode, keep it discoverable while Android searches, and use the manual for reset or mode-switch instructions.

Does pairing guarantee game support?

No. Pairing confirms the Bluetooth relationship; each game must separately support Android gamepad input.

Can I connect with a cable?

Yes, with a cable compatible with both controller and tablet ports. Android does not specify one universal cable or adapter.

The Bottom Line

Put the controller into its own Bluetooth pairing mode, select it through Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, and confirm that Android shows it as connected. Then check Game Controller settings when available and test the actual game. If pairing works but play does not, investigate game support and device compatibility separately; neither Bluetooth nor a cable guarantees that every Android game accepts the controller.
