To run BackstopJS with headless Chrome in Docker, set "engine": "puppeteer" in backstop.json, then run backstop test --docker from your project directory. BackstopJS selects an image matching the version in your project package metadata and mounts the working directory at /src. For Linux hosts, matching the container user to your host UID and GID helps keep generated files writable. BackstopJS documents the engine and Docker workflow.
Configure BackstopJS to use headless Chrome
BackstopJS uses Puppeteer by default; make the choice explicit in backstop.json with "engine": "puppeteer". Its engineOptions are merged with BackstopJS defaults, so add only the settings your test environment needs.

Inspect the generated screenshot and report files under the configured BackstopJS paths. By default, screenshot and report resources go into
backstop_datarelative to the working directory.
The BackstopJS Docker command mounts the working directory at /src; generated files therefore need to be writable by the container process. The image version is selected to match the version in your project package metadata. Check the exact version and resulting tag when debugging or reproducing a run; do not assume a tag used by another project applies to yours.

Direct commands in the Docker Hub overview
The Docker Hub overview demonstrates mounting the project at /src and running init, then reference, then test. That overview describes a BackstopJS 3.x image and says openReport is not supported by the documented image. Because the overview may not describe newer tags or workflows, check the documentation for the exact tag you plan to use before relying on those commands or that limitation: BackstopJS on Docker Hub.
Check the browser executable for the exact image tag
Do not hard-code a Chromium or Chrome path based on an unrelated image. For the backstopjs/backstopjs:6.3.25 image, Docker Hub’s version-specific layer metadata lists /usr/bin/chromium as Puppeteer’s executable path, Node 20.17.0, and linux/amd64 architecture. That layer page also reports a compressed size of 1.57 GB. These are facts about that tag’s metadata, not guarantees for other versions or platforms: 6.3.25 image layer details.

Where BackstopJS screenshots go in Docker
BackstopJS writes screenshot and report resources to configurable paths that default to backstop_data relative to the current working directory. Since Docker mounts that directory into the container at /src, those resources should appear in the host project directory. Ensure the process in the container can write to the mounted paths, and check any custom output settings in your BackstopJS configuration if files are appearing elsewhere.

Troubleshoot Chrome and Docker failures
Chrome says it cannot run as root without --no-sandbox
This can occur with older generated BackstopJS configurations, including configurations made before BackstopJS 3.5. First check whether the container is running as root and whether the project uses an older configuration. On Linux, running with the host UID/GID can also prevent root-owned files. Avoid adding --no-sandbox as a blanket fix: disabling Chrome’s sandbox changes its security posture. Use it only if you understand and accept that trade-off for the environment.
Docker output fails in CI or an IDE
If output is piped, remove Docker’s -t option. A pseudo-terminal is not appropriate for every CI or IDE output stream; the BackstopJS README specifically recommends removing -t in these cases.

Generated files are owned by root or cannot be written
Check the container’s effective user and the permissions on the bind-mounted project directory. For Linux, pass --user "$(id -u):$(id -g)" to align the container process with the host account. Also confirm that the configured BackstopJS output directory is writable from inside the container.
Chrome does not launch in a custom image

Check that the browser version is compatible with the Puppeteer version used by the image.

Make Chrome’s profile, configuration, and cache paths writable, especially if the container uses read-only filesystems or narrowly mounted directories.
Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide covers browser dependencies and container permissions. Image-specific executable paths and installed versions should be checked against the tag you actually run.

The report command is unavailable
The general Docker Hub overview says openReport is not supported by the image it documents. That statement is scoped to the overview’s BackstopJS 3.x image; verify the exact tag and report workflow rather than assuming the same restriction applies to every release.
Docker screenshots still differ from another environment
Docker can reduce environment differences, but it does not guarantee pixel-identical rendering everywhere. BackstopJS notes that the same page can render differently between environments, including differences in text. Keep the browser, fonts, operating environment, and page state consistent where reproducibility matters; investigate any remaining environmental differences rather than treating containerization as a guarantee.
