For a YouTube RTMP stream, enter the current server address and application path from YouTube Live Control Room in AWS Elemental MediaLive’s RTMP destination URL field, then enter the stream key in the RTMP stream-name field. YouTube’s separate HLS backup setup works differently: its Backup server URL includes the key, so it is not a second RTMP key or automatically a second RTMP destination.
What “backup stream key” means in this setup
YouTube’s standard encoder workflow supplies a stream URL and a stream key. MediaLive’s RTMP output keeps those values in separate fields: destination details go in the RTMP destination URL field, and the key goes in the stream-name field. Use the values shown for the specific stream in YouTube Live Control Room; they are account- and stream-specific.

YouTube’s HLS instructions are a distinct workflow. They provide an HLS stream URL and, when backup ingestion is needed, a Backup server URL. YouTube says the key is already embedded in that HLS URL. Do not paste that HLS backup URL into an RTMP stream-name field or assume that it is a second RTMP key.
Set up the YouTube RTMP destination in MediaLive
- Get the current YouTube values. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select or create the stream. Copy the current stream URL and stream key for the selected protocol. Treat the key as a secret; do not share or publish it.
- Configure an RTMP output group. In AWS Elemental MediaLive, create or edit an RTMP output group for the channel.
- Enter the destination separately from the key. In the RTMP destination URL field, enter the protocol, server address, port, and application path supplied by YouTube for that stream. In the output’s stream-name field, enter the YouTube stream key.
- Save and validate using the actual stream. Start the MediaLive channel and check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and status before relying on it for an event. The values and status shown for your stream are the reference; do not substitute example credentials.
MediaLive channel class affects the AWS-side destination count: a standard channel uses two output destinations, while a single-pipeline channel uses one. That describes MediaLive’s pipeline configuration; it does not establish that YouTube treats MediaLive’s second destination as YouTube’s backup-ingestion path.

If YouTube’s instructions specify HLS
Do not reuse the RTMP field mapping for an HLS stream. In YouTube’s HLS workflow, choose HLS as the stream protocol and use the HLS stream URL provided for the stream. If YouTube provides a Backup server URL, its key is embedded in that URL.
Configure an HLS-capable MediaLive output using the current MediaLive HLS output documentation and YouTube’s requirements. The available instructions do not establish an exact MediaLive console-field mapping for this particular HLS backup scenario, so confirm the current product documentation rather than treating the RTMP destination and stream-name fields as interchangeable with HLS fields.

YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than continuous RTMP because HLS uses segments. That difference may matter for a live event; neither protocol is universally preferable without considering the stream’s latency and feature requirements.

What MediaLive reconnection settings do—and do not do
For an RTMP connection drop, MediaLive provides controls including cache length, cache-full behavior, restart delay, retry interval, and retry count. These settings govern MediaLive’s connection and retry behavior. They are not, by themselves, proof of end-to-end failover to YouTube’s Backup server URL or a guarantee that viewers will not see an interruption.

Before a scheduled broadcast, test the intended channel and destination configuration and inspect YouTube’s preview and status. Confirm which protocol and URL YouTube assigned to that stream, and verify that the MediaLive output is pointed at those current values.
Does the procedure differ for an Indian YouTube channel?
The official setup instructions cited here do not identify a separate India-only stream-key format or MediaLive destination procedure. The general setup above applies as far as those instructions establish. Use the channel’s own Live Control Room for its URL, key, protocol, and any eligibility information; the absence of a regional distinction in setup documentation does not establish local account eligibility or service availability.
