For a one-off job you may want to reconnect to, tmux is usually the simplest fit. Add FFmpeg’s -nostdin option so it does not try to read from the terminal.
An SSH disconnect alone is not a guarantee that a foreground process will survive. These are Linux process-management approaches you can use on a Droplet; DigitalOcean’s SSH guidance explains connection and troubleshooting, not a special process-persistence guarantee.

Choose the right way to run FFmpeg

In all three approaches, use the actual input, output, codecs, and paths for your job. The example codec below is illustrative, not a recommendation for every file or destination.
Run a one-off job in tmux
tmux keeps a terminal session available on the Droplet after your SSH client disconnects. Install it using the package manager for the Droplet’s Linux distribution if it is not already installed.

Start a named session:
tmux new -s ffmpeg -
Inside that session, start FFmpeg. For example:
ffmpeg -nostdin -i INPUT -c:v libx264 OUTPUT.mp4 -
Detach without closing the session by pressing Ctrl-b, then d. You can now disconnect SSH.

After reconnecting, list sessions and reattach:
tmux ls tmux attach -t ffmpeg
If FFmpeg has already exited, reattaching may show its final terminal output. Save logs separately if that output could scroll out of the session’s history.
Manage a job with systemd
Use a service when you want the server to manage the process independently of a terminal and need a clear status and journal logs. Create a unit with administrator permissions, an absolute FFmpeg path, explicit arguments, and a working directory. A minimal example is:

Save the adapted unit as
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-job.service. Confirm the FFmpeg binary path on your Droplet and replace the example paths and arguments with those required by your job.Rank #2

Reload unit definitions and start the service:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl start ffmpeg-job.service -
Check its state and output:
systemctl status ffmpeg-job.service journalctl -u ffmpeg-job.service -
Enable it at boot only if that is what you intend. Before doing so for a one-time encode, decide what should happen if the job is already complete or its output file already exists.
Choose Restart= for the workload rather than copying a daemon’s policy automatically. A one-time transcode can finish successfully; it generally should not restart after a successful exit. The systemd documentation describes restart behavior for the installed version, and available options can vary by version.
Use nohup for a basic detached command
If you do not need an attachable terminal or service manager, this shell pattern redirects FFmpeg’s output to a log, disconnects standard input, and prints the process ID:

nohup ffmpeg -nostdin -i INPUT OUTPUT >ffmpeg.log 2>&1 < /dev/null &
printf '%sn' "$!"Save the printed PID and inspect the log and process state after reconnecting. A PID by itself is not a reliable health check if the job has exited. This approach has no built-in restart policy or terminal you can reattach to; shell behavior may depend on the Droplet’s installed environment.

Why FFmpeg needs -nostdin
FFmpeg normally checks console input. That can suspend a process running in the background if it tries to read from the terminal. Its FAQ recommends -nostdin to prevent those input checks, or redirecting standard input from /dev/null on Linux and macOS. For commands intended to run unattended, include -nostdin explicitly.
FFmpeg’s online command-line documentation is regenerated nightly. If behavior differs on your Droplet, check the documentation for the version installed there.

You cannot reattach to tmux: Reconnect to the Droplet and run
tmux ls. Check that you detached the session rather than closing it, and use the session name shown by the command.Rank #4

A systemd job is inactive or failed: Inspect
systemctl status ffmpeg-job.serviceandjournalctl -u ffmpeg-job.servicefor its state and output. -
The process starts but cannot read or write files: Check that the input, output, and log paths exist and that the account running the process has the required permissions. Also check available storage.

A remote input or stream stops working: Session persistence does not fix an unavailable source, expired credentials, or a remote connection failure. Diagnose the FFmpeg output and relevant system logs.

The job is gone after a reboot or server failure: Detaching a terminal only addresses the SSH session. It does not guarantee survival of a Droplet reboot, host failure, out-of-memory termination, or an FFmpeg failure. A service manager can apply a chosen restart policy, but cannot guarantee successful completion.

DigitalOcean’s Droplet SSH connection guidance and SSH troubleshooting resources can help with access problems; they do not establish that a particular foreground process will persist after disconnection.
