Prepare before the stream
Choose one useful question at a time
Give each interaction a clear purpose. For a poll, use options viewers can distinguish easily—for example, “Which topic should we cover first?” For Q&A, use a prompt that tells viewers what kinds of questions you can answer. Open chat works well when you want comments or suggestions that do not fit predefined options.
Tell viewers what will happen with their input
Say whether a poll will determine the next segment or whether you will select questions to answer. After the interaction, report the result and act on it where practical. This sets expectations; it does not guarantee a particular number or quality of responses.

Set up moderation and participation
Assign trusted moderators and decide whether participation should be open or limited to members, subscribers, or specific people. Limits can help with safety and manageability, but they also narrow who can contribute. Before the stream, consider slow mode, blocked words, and automatic moderation settings. YouTube offers Basic and Strict automatic moderation for potentially inappropriate messages, but held messages may need a show-or-hide decision and moderation is not foolproof.
Run a poll during the stream
- Open the stream’s chat. On desktop, YouTube Help says to create a poll from the bottom of the chat window. In the mobile app, use the chat’s Add control; the available controls and labels can vary by interface.
- Write a focused question and distinct options. Keep the choices relevant to a decision you can actually use, such as choosing which of two demonstrations to show.
- Tell viewers what the poll will decide. This helps them understand why you are asking and what happens next.
- End the poll from its banner and check the results in chat. State the result and follow through where practical.
Collect and answer questions with Live Q&A
- Schedule or start the stream, then select Add and Start a Q&A. Enter a prompt describing the questions you want, then start Q&A. On Android, the YouTube Help instructions also use the app’s Add control.
- Review the Questions list. Select a question you can address during the stream.
- Choose Select question to pin it. The selected question appears at the top of chat for viewers while you answer it.
- End Q&A deliberately. YouTube’s Android help page says ending Q&A deletes unanswered questions from its list. It also says Q&A sessions are available in Chat Replay.
Live Q&A is useful when you want to find and select questions from Live Chat to answer, rather than trying to respond to every message as it arrives.

Use chat and reactions without losing control of the stream
Prompt Live Chat with a specific invitation

Treat reactions as a quick signal
Reactions are a low-effort way for viewers watching with chat open to respond in the moment. YouTube describes them as anonymized. Use them for a quick pulse check—for example, whether to pause for another example—but do not interpret them as detailed feedback or a complete count of viewer opinions.

Adjust moderation if messages move too quickly
Slow mode sets a wait between messages. YouTube says it does not apply to the channel owner, moderators, or channel members. Blocked words and automatic moderation can help manage chat; messages held for review remain hidden unless a moderator takes action. If a held message is shown, YouTube says it appears in the feed at the original time it was entered.
Review feedback after the stream
Live chat replay is available on stream archives by default according to YouTube’s moderation guidance, but creators can turn it off. When replay is available, use it to revisit questions, comments, or moments you want to follow up on. Do not assume every viewer can access chat in every embed or playback situation.

Troubleshoot common feedback problems
- Viewers say they cannot find chat: Check whether they are watching an embedded player. YouTube’s viewer guidance says Live Chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players.
- Chat is moving too fast to follow: Use slow mode, ask for one response at a time, or have a moderator help surface useful messages.
- Poll responses do not answer the decision: Rephrase the question and make the options distinct and actionable before relying on the result.
- Questions are difficult to track: Start Live Q&A with a clear prompt, select questions from its list, and pin one at a time as you answer.
- Held messages are missing from the feed: Check moderation decisions; held messages stay hidden unless someone chooses to show them.
- Unanswered questions disappear when Q&A ends: YouTube’s Android help page says ending Q&A deletes unanswered questions from the list. Capture or address anything you need before ending it.
- Chat replay is absent from the archive: Replay can be turned off, even though YouTube says it is enabled by default on stream archives.
