A dummy battery, or DC coupler, replaces a camera’s regular battery in its battery compartment and connects the camera to an external power source. It can keep a compatible camera powered during a long live stream, but it is not universal: check the exact camera model, coupler, power adapter, and cable requirements before buying or connecting anything.
What a dummy battery does
A DC coupler has a plate shaped for a particular camera battery compartment. The plate takes the place of the normal battery, while its cable connects to an external supply. With a compatible setup, the camera can run without relying on its in-camera battery for the session. Canon describes its DR-E6P DC Coupler as providing continuous power without a battery and identifies live streaming and extended sessions as uses.

“Dummy battery” does not mean a standard connector that fits every camera. Compatibility depends on the camera and its battery system. Canon lists the DR-E6P for select EOS models; Sony says its DC-C1 is for cameras that use NP-FZ100 or NP-FW50 batteries and directs buyers to its compatibility information. Confirm your exact model in the camera manual and the accessory maker’s current list before ordering.
How to choose and use one
- Identify the exact camera and battery family. Check the camera’s model name and battery designation in its manual. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility list to verify that the specific coupler supports that camera.
- Read the coupler’s power instructions. Confirm the permitted power-source type and required output for that product. Do not infer voltage, wattage, polarity, or USB behavior from another camera or coupler.
- Match the adapter and cable to the stated requirements. For example, Sony specifies a USB Power Delivery supply rated at 65 W or higher and a 5 A USB PD cable for the DC-C1. Sony’s support page, last modified July 9, 2026, distinguishes that from its DC-C2, which needs 100 W or more: Sony’s DC coupler compatible-output table. These are product-specific requirements, not general dummy-battery rules.
- Install and route the coupler as its instructions specify. Seat it in the battery compartment and route the cable through the camera’s designed cable opening, if provided. Arrange the cable so it cannot snag, pull on the coupler, or interrupt the connection.
- Test before going live. Power on the camera and confirm normal operation with the chosen supply and cable. A coupler does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream: the camera, supply, physical connection, heat, and streaming setup can all affect operation.
Power requirements can vary substantially even among products called DC couplers. Panasonic’s DC-L10 USB-C power guidance, for instance, says that camera can receive power over USB-C while turned on with a battery inserted; Panasonic recommends a 5 V / 3 A (15 W) adapter and a cable rated for at least 15 W. It also warns that battery charge may still decrease depending on use and the power source.

Could USB power work instead?
Some cameras support operating power through their USB port, so a separate coupler may not be needed. But charging over USB and powering a camera while it operates are not interchangeable claims. Check the manual for your exact model, including whether a battery must remain installed and what adapter and cable are required.
For one model-specific example, the Canon EOS R6 Mark II online manual says the camera can be powered using Canon’s PD-E1 USB Power Adapter and notes that the battery indicator appears gray when power is supplied. That guidance applies to that camera and adapter; it should not be generalized to other Canon bodies.

Compare a supported USB-power option with a coupler using the exact camera compatibility, source output, cable rating and connector, whether USB-C remains available for another use, and whether you will use mains or portable power. Sony notes that its DC-C2 feeds power through the battery chamber, leaving the camera’s USB-C port available for another use. A different coupler may not offer that arrangement.

Panasonic’s DMW-DCC18 operating instructions recommend the DMW-AC11 and specify USB PD with 9 V / 3 A output. For commercially available power supplies, the instructions call for a cable rated at 27 W or better and caution that operation is not guaranteed with all such devices. Treat these as instructions for the DMW-DCC18, not as a template for another camera or coupler.

Common problems and what to check
- The coupler does not fit or the camera will not start: Recheck the exact camera model and battery family against the coupler’s compatibility list. Do not force a coupler that does not seat correctly.
- The camera starts but shuts down or behaves inconsistently: Compare the adapter output and cable rating with the coupler maker’s stated requirements. Check that connections are secure and that the cable is not pulling on the coupler.
- The camera’s battery level falls while connected to USB: Some cameras can draw more power during use than the source supplies. Panasonic specifically warns that the DC-L10’s remaining battery charge can decrease depending on use and source capability.
- The USB port is occupied when you need it for another accessory: Check whether the camera supports a compatible battery-compartment coupler and whether that model leaves USB available; do not assume every coupler does.
- The camera works in a short test but the live stream is interrupted later: A successful startup does not establish uninterrupted operation. Check the camera, source, cable routing, heat conditions, and streaming configuration before the next session.
