How to Use Artifacts Effectively in CONTROL Resonant

Artifacts in CONTROL Resonant support different build goals. Learn how to assess their triggers and trade-offs, manage your three first-run slots, and use the extra New Game Plus slot.

Use Artifacts to support a specific goal—not because an item is new or supposedly “best.” In CONTROL Resonant, they are equippable passive modifiers that can affect survivability, combat, exploration, or resource economy. Check each modifier’s trigger and any trade-off, then compare it with what your current build needs. Remedy has not published evidence establishing one universally best Artifact.

How Artifacts work

Remedy Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov describes Artifacts as equippable items with passive modifiers for fine-tuning a build. You find untapped Artifacts in the world and craft them into usable ones in the Gap. Remedy’s explanation does not specify a complete set of materials or crafting costs. Remedy’s New Game Plus overview also says some modifiers have conditions or trade-offs, so an effect may not be active in every situation.

Know your slot limit

During a first playthrough, you can equip up to three Artifacts. New Game Plus unlocks a fourth slot, allowing more combinations. Treat each slot as a choice: an Artifact should earn its place by helping with a goal you actually have.

How to choose an Artifact

  1. Identify what you want to improve. Decide whether your priority is survivability, combat performance, exploration, or resource use—the effect categories Remedy identifies.
  2. Read the full modifier. Check whether its benefit is always active or conditional, and look for any stated cost or trade-off. A conditional benefit should not be treated as a constant bonus.
  3. Match the effect to your play. Ask when the modifier will matter in the situations you encounter and whether you can reliably meet its condition. A strong-sounding effect is less useful if its trigger rarely fits your approach.
  4. Compare it with what is equipped. Consider the incoming Artifact alongside the effects and trade-offs of your current choices. Do not assume a newly found item is an automatic upgrade.
  5. Revisit the choice when your build changes. Weapon Forms, Combat Abilities, and Talents also shape your build. An Artifact that suited one set of choices or one goal may be less relevant after those choices change.

Consider Artifacts alongside the combat loop

Remedy’s combat and buildcrafting overview describes a system in which melee hits restore Combat Ability resource; abilities stun enemies and open them to executions; and executions temporarily boost melee damage. This gives you a way to think about build fit: decide which part of that loop you want to support, then check whether an Artifact’s actual modifier and trigger align with it.

That is a selection method, not a tested recommendation for a particular Artifact. The official overview does not identify which named Artifact is strongest for a particular Weapon Form, ability, or combat sequence.

What changes in New Game Plus

Remedy says New Game Plus carries over much of what you have earned, including Artifacts, while traversal abilities remain tied to story progression. The mode adds new Talent nodes and a fourth Artifact slot, and the world and encounters evolve as you progress. That extra slot gives you more room to experiment, but Remedy has not named a best New Game Plus Artifact or published an item-by-item scaling analysis.

What is—and is not—known about Artifact builds

Remedy’s published explanations establish the broad effect categories, the possibility of conditions and trade-offs, crafting in the Gap from found untapped Artifacts, and the slot limits. They do not provide a complete catalog of Artifact names and effects, compatibility rules, exact crafting costs, or comparative performance data. Without those details, a ranked “best Artifacts” list or precise build recipe would go beyond what the official information supports.
