Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor most desktop gaming streams, add graphics as sources in an OBS scene and stream that composed scene. If another app needs the result as a webcam feed, use OBS Virtual Camera and choose the output it should receive. For VR mixed reality—where your real camera view is combined with game-aware virtual elements—use a compatible capture workflow such as LIV, then check camera alignment and compositing before going live.
What counts as AR or 3D graphics in a stream?
A graphic layered over your gameplay is not automatically augmented reality. A logo, alert, animated frame, or other overlay is a flat element composited into the outgoing video. It can look three-dimensional, but it does not necessarily know where objects are in the game or respond to the camera’s perspective.

Mixed-reality capture is different: it combines a real player or camera view with virtual elements tied to a supported game. That may involve tracking, alignment, and foreground/background handling. Ordinary OBS overlays do not create this kind of game-aware scene. A further distinction is interactive 3D spectator views: a 2022 CHI paper describes a research system that reconstructed a 3D game representation from depth and camera data, allowing spectators to control their view. That is not a feature produced by adding standard OBS graphics.

How to add graphics to a standard desktop stream
Build the composition in OBS
- Create or select an OBS scene for the gameplay segment.
- Add the game capture and any camera feed you want viewers to see.
- Add each graphic or animation as a source in that scene, then arrange and size it in the composition. Keep important gameplay information visible and check that overlays do not cover interface elements viewers need.
- Preview the scene and check the result at the output size you intend to use. If you use multiple scenes, check each one where the graphic should appear.
This is the normal desktop approach: capture the game and compose the viewer-facing elements into one video scene. The OBS Virtual Camera documentation explains how to send scene output to webcam-accepting applications; it is not a complete guide to configuring every possible overlay source. See the OBS Virtual Camera Guide.

Can OBS act as a virtual camera?
Yes. OBS Virtual Camera shares an OBS output as a webcam-style feed with another application that accepts a camera input. This is useful when a destination app cannot capture your screen directly, or when you want it to receive a composed OBS scene instead of a physical camera.
- In OBS, open the Controls dock and start Virtual Camera.
- Open the virtual-camera settings and select the output the receiving app should see: Program, Preview, a specific Scene, or a Source.
- Choose Program when the receiving app should get the normal OBS output. Use Preview cautiously: in Studio Mode, OBS says Preview output exposes changes as you make them, so scene edits may be visible before you take them live.
- In the receiving application, select the OBS virtual camera as its camera input. Test the actual app and destination before your broadcast; camera support and behavior depend on that application.
Virtual Camera sends video to a webcam-compatible app. It is distinct from streaming directly from a game or app, which depends on that platform’s own capabilities.

How to put yourself into VR gameplay with mixed-reality capture
For a real player or camera feed composited with virtual game elements, first confirm the specific game and capture mode are supported. LIV’s creator workflow is for supported games; its SDK is a developer integration for adding support, not something creators need to install merely to capture a game that already supports LIV. See LIV’s overview of its creator and developer workflows.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Verify compatibility and mode requirements. Check the current instructions for your game, platform, and selected LIV capture mode. Requirements for one mode should not be assumed to apply to every LIV workflow. For example, LIV documents specific PCVR, OpenXR, and SteamVR requirements for Presence Platform capture.
- Set up the camera input. Start mixed-reality capture, select the camera device, and choose a resolution that matches it. LIV also calls out ARGB when NVIDIA Broadcast is used in the setup it describes.
- Capture the LIV output in OBS. Add the LIV Output window to the OBS scene you use for streaming, and inspect the composite rather than relying only on an initial preview.
- Check the result in motion. Test calibration and alignment, whether the player appears in front of the right virtual elements, and controller latency. Correct problems before going live.
- Plan for background separation. LIV’s documentation says, “For real cameras, LIV does not have a live segmentation (background removal) at this time.” For that documented real-camera workflow, LIV recommends a green screen and calibration. A green screen is relevant to this case, not a general requirement for ordinary stream overlays.
See LIV’s mixed-reality setup documentation for current device and mode instructions. LIV also describes its developer SDK for Unity and Unreal at its SDK page; that is for developers integrating support, not a general creator capture tool.

Choose the approach that fits the effect
| Approach | What it composites | Tracking and compatibility | Setup considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS scene graphics | Gameplay, camera, and flat graphic sources in one outgoing video. | Graphics can be positioned in the video scene; game-aware tracking is not implied. | Build and check the composition in OBS. |
| OBS Virtual Camera | An OBS Program, Preview, Scene, or Source output as webcam-style video. | The receiving application must accept a webcam feed. | Choose the intended output and test it in the actual receiving app. Preview can expose Studio Mode edits. |
| VR mixed-reality capture | A real player or camera view combined with virtual elements from a supported game. | Depends on the selected game, LIV mode, platform/runtime, camera, and calibration. | Check alignment, foreground behavior, and latency; real-camera background separation may require a green screen in LIV’s documented workflow. |
These approaches serve different purposes, so there is no universal winner by visual quality, latency, price, or reliability. Test the exact game, camera, platform, and receiving application you plan to use.
Troubleshoot before going live
- The receiving app shows no OBS feed: Confirm Virtual Camera is running, select it as the app’s camera, and verify that the app supports webcam inputs.
- Private scene edits appear in the feed: Check whether Virtual Camera is set to Preview. Select Program if the destination should see the regular OBS output rather than Studio Mode changes.
- A graphic is missing or in the wrong place: Check that it is included in the active scene and positioned correctly in the composition. If it should appear across several scenes, verify each scene rather than assuming a change applies everywhere.
- The VR player does not line up with the virtual scene: Recheck camera selection, resolution, calibration, and alignment using the current instructions for the chosen capture mode.
- The player appears behind the wrong elements, or the background looks wrong: Inspect foreground behavior and background separation in the composite. LIV’s documented real-camera workflow does not provide live segmentation; its guidance recommends a green screen with calibration.
- Controllers feel delayed: Test controller latency as part of the LIV output check and review the instructions for your mode and setup.
- The capture mode will not start: Reconfirm the game and mode compatibility and the applicable runtime/platform requirements. Do not apply Presence Platform requirements to a different mode unless its documentation says they apply.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded gameplay videos, StreamNeo is a separate option from composing a live gaming scene in OBS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
