To run visual regression checks on Storybook components with Applitools Eyes, install its Storybook SDK, configure an API key, and run the Eyes CLI against your Storybook. Eyes captures the stories available in that Storybook and compares them with saved baselines; a person reviews differences before deciding whether to update a baseline or investigate a regression.
What the Storybook integration does
Storybook stories provide discrete component states for visual checks. Eyes captures screenshots at checkpoints and compares later captures with stored baselines. The first run establishes baselines for each story and environment; later runs report visual differences in the Applitools Dashboard. See the Applitools Storybook quick start and its Eyes overview.

The integration tests the states your stories actually represent. It does not create missing stories or test unrepresented behavior automatically. Include meaningful variations such as loading, empty, error, and hover states where those states matter to your component.

These are the commands in Applitools’ current quick start. An older tutorial describes a headless Chrome workflow; use the current setup instructions rather than treating that historical tutorial as the present configuration path: Applitools Storybook tutorial.
Review differences and manage baselines
A visual difference is a prompt for review, not an automatic verdict that the change is a bug. Compare the changed rendering with the intended design and the change under development. Accept an intentional UI change and save the updated baseline; reject a difference that appears to be an unintended regression so the previous baseline remains in place. The general Eyes workflow is described in Applitools’ visual testing workflow.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
- Before running: check that stories cover the component states you want to protect.
- When a difference appears: identify the story and environment, then inspect whether the change is intended.
- When approving: update the baseline only for the change that the team means to keep.
- When rejecting: investigate the component, styles, assets, or rendering conditions responsible for the unexpected result.
Choose between the CLI and Storybook addon
The CLI is the documented command-line setup and can be used during development or in a pipeline. Applitools also offers an Eyes Addon for Storybook for teams that prefer to run and triage checks from the Storybook interface. Applitools describes addon results as grouped to match Storybook structure and streamed back while runs complete; exact behavior depends on the installed versions and environment. The addon and CLI use the same applitools.config.js workflow according to the Applitools Storybook product page.

Neither route removes the need for representative stories and human baseline review. Before standardizing on either, check current compatibility and setup guidance for the versions of Storybook and related tools in your project; the cited materials do not establish a complete current compatibility matrix.
Practical limits and data considerations
Applitools’ Storybook product page makes claims about local processing, deterministic execution, and not sending snapshots to an external model or using them for training. Those are vendor statements, not independent verification, and they do not by themselves establish every boundary of data handling. Consult Applitools’ current documentation and terms for the details relevant to your organization’s security and compliance requirements.

The available integration material does not establish current pricing, independent performance benchmarks, or a full version-compatibility table. Confirm those details directly with the vendor before making a procurement or rollout decision.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The CLI cannot authenticate: confirm that the API key was entered correctly or that
APPLITOOLS_API_KEYis available in the shell or CI job that runs Eyes. Do not expose the key in source control or build output. - No stories are captured: make sure Storybook is available at the URL supplied with
-u, or allow the CLI to start it. Confirm that the project has stories and that the runner is targeting the intended Storybook instance. - The local URL does not respond: start the server and verify the address and port. The documented example uses
http://localhost:6006; use the actual URL and port configured for your project. - Many differences appear at once: check that you are comparing the intended environment and stories, and look for unintended changes in rendering conditions or assets before approving any new baselines.
- The setup instructions do not match your installed version: follow the current Applitools Storybook quick start and check its compatibility guidance rather than copying the older headless Chrome tutorial.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Eyes test every possible state of a component?
No. It captures the stories in your Storybook, so a state must be represented by a story to be included.
Can I run checks without launching Storybook from the CLI?
Yes. Use the documented -u option to point Eyes at an already running Storybook URL.
