How to Use Apple Photos’ New iOS 27 Features

Use iOS 27’s Photos tools to remove distractions, extend a photo’s edges, change its perspective, or save a still from a video—with device and availability requirements explained.

To use iOS 27’s new AI photo edits, open a picture in Photos and go to Edit → Tools, then choose Clean Up, Extend, or Reframe. These editing tools require an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or an iPhone 16 model or later. Language and region support, and usage limits, may also affect availability.

Choose the tool for the change you want

The three tools make different kinds of edits. Pick one based on what needs changing, rather than expecting them to work as interchangeable filters.

Tool Use it to What it changes
Clean Up Remove a distracting object Edits selected parts of the existing image.
Extend Add breathing room or change the composition’s proportions Generates image area beyond the original frame.
Reframe Adjust the perspective after taking the picture Shifts the image’s perspective; Apple says generated content is limited to areas where the perspective changes.

Apple calls the feature Spatial Reframing in its release announcement; the editing control in the iPhone guide is labeled Reframe. They refer to the same tool. Apple describes the changes as ways to edit while respecting the original moment, but that is Apple’s feature description, not an independent assessment of results. How to use Clean Up in Photos

  1. In Photos, open the image you want to edit.
  2. Tap Edit, then Tools, then Clean Up.
  3. Tap, brush over, or circle the object to remove. Photos may highlight some objects automatically. Pinch or pan to work more precisely.
  4. Choose Auto, Fast, or High Quality processing. If you choose High Quality, tap Clean Up to apply it.
  5. Tap Done, then tap Done again to close the image.

Apple describes Clean Up as improved for complex scenes; it does not guarantee that every selection will produce a seamless result. To discard a saved Clean Up edit, reopen the image and go to Edit → Tools → Clean Up → Reset. Apple’s iPhone guide to Clean Up, Extend, and Reframe

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 17, US Version, 256GB, eSIM, Mist Blue- Unlocked (Renewed Premium)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

How to extend a photo on iPhone

  1. Open the photo in Photos and tap Edit.
  2. Tap Tools, then Extend.
  3. Pinch or drag the photo to expand the background. Drag a frame edge to adjust the crop.
  4. Tap Extend, then Done and Done.

Extend generates image area beyond the photo’s existing border. It can help when you want more room around a subject, a different aspect ratio, or a straighter horizon without cropping away as much of the original image. The generated area is not guaranteed to match every scene accurately or look invisible. To undo a saved Extend edit, return to Edit → Tools → Extend and tap Reset. Apple’s iPhone editing guide

How to reframe a photo on iPhone

  1. Open the photo in Photos and tap Edit.
  2. Tap Tools, then Reframe.
  3. Touch and drag to change perspective, or use two fingers to pan, zoom, and rotate.
  4. Tap Reframe. Tap the photo to compare the adjusted framing with the original, then tap Done twice.

Apple says its model generates new content only where the perspective has shifted, with the aim of keeping the reframed image consistent with the original scene. That is Apple’s description of the feature, not a guarantee for every photo. To undo a saved edit, return to Edit → Tools → Reframe and tap Reset. Which iPhones support Apple Intelligence photo editing?

Apple’s iOS 27 guide lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later as compatible with these Apple Intelligence editing tools. An iPhone that can install iOS 27 is not necessarily eligible for them. Availability also varies by language and region, and Apple says some server-side Apple Intelligence features, including intelligent photo editing, may have daily usage limits. The limits can depend on demand, request complexity, and other factors; Apple does not state a fixed quota in the cited guide. Check Apple’s current compatibility and availability details before relying on the tools in a particular language or region. Apple’s iOS 27 editing and compatibility guide
