You can transfer data to a Google Pixel 3a from an Android phone or an iPhone during the Pixel’s initial setup. Google recommends a cable for the Pixel 3a’s Android setup path; iPhone transfers also use a cable for the broadest range of supported data. What copies depends on the source phone and method, so review the item list on the Pixel before choosing Copy.
Before you start
- Charge both phones, keep them nearby, and make sure Wi-Fi is available. Back up or sync important data on the old phone first. Google recommends a cable for its Pixel 7 Pro and earlier setup instructions, which cover the Pixel 3a. Google’s Android transfer guide
- Check that the Pixel has enough free storage. Google says a full Pixel can pause a transfer.
- Use a cable that supports data, not just charging. Some charging cables do not carry data; Google recommends checking the old phone’s connector and using a data-capable cable. Google’s cable and transfer troubleshooting
How do I transfer data from Android to Pixel 3a?
With a cable (recommended for Pixel 3a)
- Insert the SIM card if applicable, turn on the Pixel 3a, and tap Get Started.
- At Copy apps & data, tap Next, then Copy your data. On Pixel 7 Pro and earlier, Google notes you may need to tap the screen image five times to reveal the USB-C cable option.
- At Use your old device, tap Next. Connect the phones with the Android charging cable and follow the prompts.
- On the Pixel, choose Express to transfer your Google Account and backed-up data, or Customize to select items. Tap Copy.
Without a cable
Google’s Wi-Fi option requires Android 5 or later on the old phone and Android 12 or later on the Pixel. On the Pixel’s copy screen, tap No cable?, then Copy without cable. Open the setup notification on the old phone and follow the on-screen instructions. The Pixel 3a must meet the Android 12 requirement for this option; use the cable path if it does not.

What Android data can transfer?
Google lists texts, photos, music, contacts, calendars, and apps as examples. Its broader transfer list also includes files, call history, and WhatsApp history. Coverage is not universal: some manufacturer-specific app data may not copy, notes, passwords, or alarms can depend on which Google apps you use, and copied apps must be available from Google Play. - Connect the iPhone’s charging cable to the Pixel. Depending on the iPhone cable and connector, you may need a Quick Switch Adapter.
- When prompted on the iPhone, tap Trust. On the Pixel, select the data types to copy and tap Copy.
- Keep the iPhone on its transfer screen until the copy finishes.
Wireless or cable: which iPhone method should you use?

These are Google’s listed categories, not a guarantee that every item will transfer from every iPhone. Some app data, in-app purchases, paid apps or apps unavailable on Google Play, DRM-protected music, and Safari bookmarks may not copy. Fix common transfer problems
iPhone messages do not appear
Confirm that messages were selected during setup. Google says they can take up to 24 hours to appear. If they are still missing, use Google’s documented post-setup transfer option for the device. Reseat both ends and try another data-capable cable. A cable that charges a phone may not support data transfer. Google’s cable troubleshooting

The transfer stalls or pauses
Check the Pixel’s available storage, keep both phones powered, and leave them connected while the copy runs. Google notes that insufficient Pixel storage can pause a transfer. Google’s Android transfer troubleshooting
Photos or app content are missing
Check whether the photos are stored in iCloud or Google Photos and whether the app’s data is backed up or supports transfer. Some content is tied to an account or service rather than stored directly on the phone.

WhatsApp history is missing

The SIM or eSIM did not move
Phone-to-phone data copying does not ensure that mobile service moves with it. eSIM transfer depends on carrier and device support; contact your carrier if no transfer option appears.
