Call ApiFlash from a Django view, keep its access key on the server, and return the image bytes in an HttpResponse. ApiFlash accepts GET query parameters or POST form data at https://api.apiflash.com/v1/urltoimage. The example below uses POST, checks the upstream response, and returns a safe error instead of exposing provider details to the caller.
Set up the ApiFlash key and HTTP client
Install the Python requests package in your project environment, then put the ApiFlash access key in deployment configuration rather than source control or browser code. For example, set an environment variable named APIFLASH_ACCESS_KEY in the environment that runs Django.

# settings.py
import os
APIFLASH_ACCESS_KEY = os.environ["APIFLASH_ACCESS_KEY"]
Failing at startup when the key is absent is preferable to silently deploying a view that cannot make captures. ApiFlash warns that a frontend API call exposes the access key, so the request to ApiFlash belongs on the Django server.
Create a Django screenshot view
This pattern expects a URL in the incoming request’s url query parameter. It uses a POST form request to ApiFlash, which its API supports, and returns the binary image response directly.

def screenshot(request):
target = request.GET.get("url", "")
if not target.startswith(("https://", "http://")):
return JsonResponse(
{"error": "Provide a complete http(s) URL."},
status=400,
)
params = {
"access_key": settings.APIFLASH_ACCESS_KEY,
"url": target,
"format": "png",
# Optional examples:
# "full_page": "true",

if upstream.status_code != 200:
# Log a redacted status and diagnostic context server-side.
# Do not send the access key or raw upstream response to the caller.
return JsonResponse({"error": "Screenshot capture failed."}, status=502)
content_type = upstream.headers.get("Content-Type", "image/jpeg")
if not content_type.startswith("image/"):
return JsonResponse(
{"error": "Screenshot service returned an unexpected response."},
status=502,
)
return HttpResponse(upstream.content, content_type=content_type)
The caller can display the returned image by using the Django route as an image source, or request it directly and save the response body. To route the view, add a URL pattern:
# urls.py
from django.urls import path
from .views import screenshot
urlpatterns = [
path("screenshot/", screenshot, name="screenshot"),
]
A request to /screenshot/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fexample.com returns image bytes when the capture succeeds. Django views are responsible for returning an HttpResponse or another response class; HttpResponse accepts binary content directly.
Protect the view and its target URL
A scheme check only rejects obviously malformed input; it is not a sufficient production URL policy. If users can submit arbitrary targets, an unrestricted capture route can be abused as a proxy to destinations the application should not reach. Apply the controls appropriate to the product:

- Restrict allowed hosts or domains when captures should be limited to known sites. Validate parsed hostnames rather than relying on string-prefix checks.
- Require authentication and apply rate limits if the route is not intended for anonymous public use.
- Keep the ApiFlash key out of source control, frontend code, public errors, and logs. Redact sensitive request data when recording failures.
- Set a finite timeout and decide how your application handles slow or failed captures.
These are application-side safeguards; ApiFlash’s capture contract does not decide who may call your Django endpoint or what destinations your application should permit.
Choose how the capture should behave
The required ApiFlash parameters are access_key and a fully qualified url beginning with http:// or https://. Its documented endpoint is https://api.apiflash.com/v1/urltoimage. GET sends parameters in the query string; POST sends them as form data. Values that need it must be URL encoded.
Image bytes or JSON links
By default, ApiFlash returns image bytes with response headers identifying the content. That is the direct choice for a Django endpoint that displays or downloads the capture. Set response_type=json when your application instead needs JSON containing links to the screenshot and, when enabled, extracted HTML or text.

Format, dimensions, and full-page capture
formatacceptsjpeg(the default),png, orwebp. Thequalityoption applies to JPEG and WebP.widthandheightset viewport dimensions; the documented defaults are 1920 by 1080. ApiFlash also constrains dimensions and total pixel area.full_page=truecaptures the full page height, making theheightsetting inapplicable.
Wait for content to load
For pages that render asynchronously, choose readiness controls based on what the target page actually needs:
wait_untilacceptsdom_loaded,page_loaded, ornetwork_idle(the documented default).wait_until_timeoutcaps the wait; if the cap is reached, capture can proceed with the content loaded so far.wait_forwaits for a CSS selector to appear, which is useful when a specific component is inserted after the initial load. ApiFlash documents that the capture aborts if there is no match within 15 seconds.delayadds an optional wait of up to 10 seconds. ApiFlash recommends usingwait_fororwait_untilwhere possible because they are more reliable than an arbitrary pause.
Cache, page cleanup, and other controls
fresh and ttl control cache refresh and duration. ApiFlash documents a default TTL of 86,400 seconds and a maximum of 2,592,000 seconds (30 days); it says repeated calls with identical parameters can use a cached screenshot and do not count against the monthly quota. Check current account terms if those behaviors affect billing or freshness requirements.
Other documented options include no_cookie_banners, no_ads, no_tracking, element, crop, user_agent, cookies, headers, css, and js. Consult the ApiFlash API documentation for parameter syntax and restrictions before adding them to the form data.
Return an attachment or consume JSON
Offer the image as a download
If the browser should download the result rather than display it inline, Django’s FileResponse supports binary files and an attachment disposition. With an in-memory buffer, rewind it before passing it to FileResponse. Alternatively, set a Content-Disposition attachment header on an HttpResponse. Django’s response reference is Request and response objects.

Use JSON response mode when links are needed
When the view needs ApiFlash’s returned links or extraction results, request response_type=json and handle the upstream JSON separately. Do not run the binary-image content-type check on that response: validate that the upstream response is the expected JSON, then return only the fields your application intends to expose. The direct image view above intentionally handles only image responses.

Handle errors, quotas, and load
ApiFlash documents these upstream status codes. The Django endpoint can return a generic 502 to its caller while recording a suitably redacted diagnostic on the server; where useful, it can also map invalid caller input to a 400 rather than treating it as a provider failure.
| ApiFlash status | Documented meaning | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| 400 | Invalid parameters or target cannot be captured | Check URL encoding, required parameters, and target accessibility. |
| 401 | Invalid or revoked key | Verify deployment configuration and rotate or replace the server-side key as needed. |
| 402 | Plan quota exceeded | Check quota and account terms rather than retrying unchanged requests. |
| 403 | Feature unavailable on the plan | Remove or replace the unsupported option, or check the account’s feature entitlements. |
| 429 | Rate limited | Reduce request pressure and retry according to your application’s backoff policy. |
| 500 | Internal capture failure | Record a redacted diagnostic and avoid an immediate retry loop. |
ApiFlash documents a rate limit of 20 requests per second with a burst size of 400; excess requests are delayed, while requests beyond the burst may be terminated with 429. It also documents a limit of 5 requests per hour for repeated identical failed captures. The documentation does not state a year for these figures.

Successful capture responses include X-Quota-Limit, X-Quota-Remaining, and X-Quota-Reset. The documented quota endpoint is /v1/urltoimage/quota; use the response headers or that endpoint for monitoring instead of hard-coding an assumed plan allowance. ApiFlash’s public documentation reviewed here does not establish current plan pricing or plan-specific quota amounts.
Troubleshoot common integration problems
- Django reports a missing setting or the provider returns an authentication error: confirm the environment variable exists in the deployed process and that
settings.pyreads the same name. Do not put the key in a template or client-side JavaScript. - The provider rejects the target URL: ensure the submitted value is a complete HTTP or HTTPS URL and that query-string characters are encoded correctly. Then check whether the target can be captured.
- The page is captured before its main content appears: choose a suitable
wait_untilvalue or wait for a stable selector withwait_for. A longer arbitrary delay may add latency without reliably solving the issue. - The page is too tall or clipped: use
full_page=truewhen the goal is the entire page; remember thatheightdoes not apply in full-page mode. - Django returns 502 despite an upstream response: inspect the upstream status and content type in redacted server-side logs. A JSON error body is not an image; the sample rejects non-image responses rather than returning them with an image content type.
- Captures begin failing after working earlier: check quota headers, account limits, rate limiting, key status, and any plan-restricted capture options before increasing retries.
- Identical failures continue to be rejected: ApiFlash documents a limit of five requests per hour for repeated identical failed captures, so fix the underlying URL or capture condition rather than retrying unchanged input.
Or skip the browser setup
If you want a screenshot endpoint without wiring an external browser-capture API into Django, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A one-call request can save an image response:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, alongside known newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the same Django route return both an inline image and a file download?
Yes. Choose the response disposition based on the request or a separate route: return inline image bytes for display, or use a file response with attachment disposition for download.
Does ApiFlash provide a Django-specific integration?
The documented pattern here uses ApiFlash’s HTTP API contract with Django response classes; the official documentation reviewed for this article does not provide a Django-specific sample.
