How to Use an SD Card for More Samsung Tablet Storage

Samsung tablets don’t offer system-wide default storage on a microSD card, but compatible models can use one for files, media, and some apps.

If you’re asking how to set an SD card as the default storage on a Samsung tablet, there’s no system-wide setting for that. Samsung Android devices don’t support converting a removable microSD card into internal storage. If your Galaxy tablet supports microSD, you can still use a card for files and media, and move some apps when their settings allow it.

Check that your Galaxy tablet supports a microSD card

Not every Samsung tablet has a microSD slot. Check the specifications for your exact model to confirm that it supports cards and to find its maximum supported capacity. Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by model, carrier, and software version, so don’t assume another Galaxy tablet’s instructions or capacity limit will apply to yours.

Samsung’s card-format overview lists microSD cards at up to 2 GB, microSDHC cards at over 2 GB up to 32 GB, and microSDXC cards at over 32 GB up to 2 TB. Those are format ranges, not a promise that a particular tablet supports a card of that size. Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video; confirm your tablet’s specifications and choose a compatible card for your intended use. Samsung Support: microSD card information

Move photos, videos, and other files to the card

Use Samsung’s My Files app to move or copy files. Samsung directs users to My Files rather than moving files directly from apps such as Gallery. A move frees space on the tablet; a copy leaves the original in place.

  1. Insert a compatible microSD card and open My Files.
  2. Find the file or files you want, then touch and hold to select them.
  3. Tap Move or Copy.
  4. Return to My Files Home, select SD card, and open the destination folder.
  5. Tap Move here or Copy here.

The SD card destination appears only when compatible storage is available. For Samsung’s file-management guidance, see how to use an SD card or memory card.

Move an app only if its settings allow it

Some apps can be moved to removable storage, but the option is not available for every app. On a supported tablet, open Settings > Apps, select the app, tap Storage > Change, choose SD card, then tap Move. If Change is missing, the app’s storage location cannot be changed. Preloaded apps and apps whose developers disallow removable storage are common exclusions. Don’t assume that all app data or future updates will reside on the card. Samsung Support: manage and transfer data with a memory card

Format or remove a card safely

Back up anything you need before formatting: formatting erases the card. On supported software versions, Samsung’s route is Settings > Battery and device care or Device care > Storage; switch to the SD card view, open More options, then choose Format. Menu names and availability vary. Before removing a card, unmount it in Storage settings if your tablet offers that option. If card errors continue after formatting, Samsung advises replacing the card; card problems can cause data loss and performance issues. See Samsung’s microSD troubleshooting guidance.
