A receiver with a free AUX or CD input can accept a Bluetooth audio receiver; a turntable needs a phono stage somewhere in its signal chain; and passive speakers need compatible amplification. If the equipment is faulty or its electrical condition is uncertain, get qualified help before using it.
Start by deciding what “repurpose” means for your equipment
For most home audio gear, the simplest form of repurposing is continued use: retain the receiver, amplifier, speakers, turntable, or cassette deck in its original role and connect it to a source that fits. This usually means checking the available inputs and outputs rather than modifying the equipment internally.

Changing a device’s primary function is a different project. A conversion may require electrical or mechanical changes, and it can make an otherwise useful component harder to use or service. If your goal is better access to modern sources, first see whether an external adapter can do the job while leaving the original equipment intact.

Check condition and safety before connecting anything
Do not assume a component is safe just because its case and controls look intact. If it has a damaged power lead, behaves erratically, or has an unknown electrical condition after storage, stop and seek inspection or repair from someone competent to service audio equipment. The UK Health and Safety Executive’s guidance addresses electrical testing in servicing and repair; it is not a do-it-yourself internal repair guide: HSE guidance on electrical testing and servicing.

- Listen music wireless: Connect with computer speakers, home stereo systems or other speaker systems via the 3.5 mm or RCA cable, then pair with the Bluetooth audio devices such as smartphones or tablet for streaming music.
- Easy setup and automatic reconnect: There is a big bluetooth symbol button in bluetooth receiver middle. Pair your bluetooth device to this adapter with a single button press. Click once means Bluetooth Connect/Disconnect. Hold the botton 3 second mean ON/OFF. It can reconnect automatically with the previously paired device.
- Wireless range: Indoors(without obstacles) connect rang up 30-40 ft (10-12 m).
- Works with most device: Bluetooth enabled device including smartphones, tablets, computers, laptops upon and any powered PC speakers, home stereo systems and A/V receivers.
- NOTE: This adapter doesn't have built-in battery, power by AC to DC power adapter or USB cable. This product is a bluetooth receiver ONLY, not a bluetooth transmitter. Only to give Bluetooth capabilities to an existing stereo / powered speaker / PA. If you have any problems, please contact us at any time by Amazon Order, and we will speed up the process to resolve the issue.
- Follow the equipment manuals when changing external cables, including any instruction to unplug equipment first.
- Do not use a damaged power lead or continue operating equipment that shows signs of a fault.
- For a questionable unit, have it assessed before putting it back into regular use. Avoid opening or testing internal circuitry unless you are qualified to do so.
For equipment being prepared for reuse in England, Environment Agency guidance sets conditions for when used electrical and electronic equipment remains suitable for reuse and specifies checks for discarded WEEE being prepared for reuse. Those regulatory and operator requirements are not a universal hobbyist checklist. The guidance says, “Cleaning is not repair,” in its discussion of what counts as a minor repair: Environment Agency guidance on WEEE and reuse.
Can you connect an old turntable to a modern receiver?
Yes, if the turntable’s output and the receiver’s input are compatible. A turntable normally needs a phono stage, which boosts and equalizes its signal. That stage may be inside the turntable or receiver, or supplied by an external phono preamp. Use only one phono stage in the chain.

- Check the turntable. Look for a PHONO/LINE switch or a built-in phono preamp, and consult the manual for its output and cartridge requirements.
- Check the receiver. If it has a PHONO input and phono stage, connect a turntable set to PHONO there. If the turntable’s built-in stage is enabled, connect its line-level output to a line input such as AUX or CD instead.
- Add a phono preamp only if needed. If neither device has a phono stage, connect the turntable to an external phono preamp, then connect the preamp’s line-level output to AUX, CD, or another suitable line input.
- Connect the ground wire if provided. Use the receiver or preamp’s ground terminal where the equipment provides one, and follow the manuals for the exact arrangement.
Do not send a line-level signal into PHONO, or an unamplified phono signal into a regular line input, unless the equipment documentation specifically supports that connection. If a phono preamp is required, confirm cartridge compatibility before choosing one. See NAD’s turntable connection guidance, Sony’s explanation of PHONO and built-in phono amplifiers, and Yamaha’s receiver connection instructions.

If the stereo works and has an available line-level input, connect a powered Bluetooth audio receiver to that input. A free AUX or CD input is a typical choice. Pair your phone or other Bluetooth source with the adapter, select the matching input on the stereo, and begin at low volume.

- 100 watts x 2 (8 ohms, 1 Kilo Hertz). Speaker impedance - 6–16 ohms

- Built in Bluetooth lets you wirelessly stream your favorite music service, podcasts, and more from other Bluetooth devices.
- Connect up to 4 speakers; A/B switching to play all at once, or in separate zones
Do not connect a standard Bluetooth receiver to the stereo’s PHONO input or speaker outputs. The adapter supplies a source signal; it does not repair the stereo or modernize its internal electronics. Check the manuals for the receiver and adapter to confirm the correct output and cable. The practical connection route is also outlined in this Bluetooth adapter guide; the equipment documentation should govern your particular setup.
Can old passive speakers work with modern sources?
Yes, if the speakers are in suitable condition and connected to compatible amplification. Passive speakers do not take a source signal directly from a phone or Bluetooth receiver: they need an amplifier or receiver between the source and speakers. Check the speaker and amplifier manuals for their connection and operating requirements before connecting them.

The correct match cannot be inferred from a speaker’s age or appearance. The manuals and the actual condition of both components matter; if either is uncertain, have it checked rather than guessing at compatibility.

When should you repair, reuse, or recycle old equipment?
Base the decision on the equipment’s condition, intended use, and the work needed—not just on whether it powers on. A working component with compatible connections may be useful as-is. A faulty unit may need qualified service, while equipment that cannot reasonably be reused may belong in an authorized local collection or e-waste route.

- Reuse: Keep a working component in its original role when its connections suit your setup.
- Repair: Seek competent service when a fault or electrical uncertainty makes continued use questionable. Do not treat cleaning or a cosmetic improvement as proof that a fault has been fixed.
- Recycle or dispose: If the item is discarded or unsuitable for reuse, check your local rules and use an appropriate authorized collection route. Requirements vary by jurisdiction.
England’s WEEE guidance describes criteria for reuse and calls for visual, POPs, electrical-safety, and functionality checks, with records, when discarded WEEE is prepared for reuse. These provisions apply in their stated context, not automatically to every owner in every country. The European Commission’s 31 July 2026 release says EU right-to-repair measures begin from that date for covered repairable product categories and describes repair access, spare parts, and a guarantee extension in specified circumstances; it does not establish that every vintage audio component is covered. Check the applicable national rules and product scope: European Commission release on EU repair measures.
Why reuse matters—and what the figures do and do not say
The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre reported in 2022 that electronic waste was estimated to grow by 2% annually and that less than 40% of electronic waste was recycled in the EU. These are report-era estimates, not measurements of the current 2026 rate: JRC report on electronics repair.
Separately, the European Commission’s 31 July 2026 release described €4.8 billion as expected growth and investment from its repair measures. That is a forward-looking estimate attributed to the Commission, not a realized outcome or a value specific to audio equipment.
