To capture a website at a mobile size through MCP, connect a browser automation server such as Playwright MCP to your MCP client, start it with a mobile device profile or explicit viewport dimensions, navigate to the page, then call browser_take_screenshot. Use the image to inspect layout; use Playwright’s accessibility snapshot when you need page structure or references for interacting with controls. Browser emulation is not a test on a physical phone.
1. Configure Playwright MCP for a mobile viewport
Playwright MCP accepts browser and viewport options when the server starts. Choose a named device profile for a preset, generic mobile emulation for a quick default, or explicit dimensions when you need a specific width and height. The options and example profiles below reflect the official Playwright documentation accessed October 3, 2026; package behavior and supported profiles can change.

Use a named device profile

Use generic mobile emulation
The --mobile option selects a documented generic mobile profile. Its emulation differs by browser engine: Pixel 10 on Chromium and iPhone 17 on WebKit. These are configured browser profiles, not evidence of testing on either physical handset.
Set exact viewport dimensions
Use --viewport-size=WIDTHxHEIGHT when you need direct control over the viewport, for example --viewport-size=390x844. Treat 390 × 844 as an example only; choose dimensions appropriate to the layout or device size you are investigating. An explicit viewport controls dimensions, while a device profile provides a preset.
Select the browser engine
Playwright MCP documents options for Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge. If your issue is specific to an engine, select it deliberately along with the viewport or device profile. Generic mobile emulation varies between Chromium and WebKit, so do not assume the same generic profile represents the same device across engines. 2. Navigate and take the screenshot
- Save the MCP configuration and restart or reconnect your client as required for it to launch the Playwright server.
- Navigate to the target URL using the browser navigation tool exposed by the server. Wait for the page to reach the state you want to inspect, such as after a menu opens or a page finishes rendering.
- Call
browser_take_screenshotthrough the MCP client. Ask for a screenshot of the current viewport, or specify an element or full-page capture as needed. - Review the image for visual layout, responsive behavior, canvas or chart rendering, and bug documentation. For text, element structure, and interaction, request an accessibility snapshot as well.

3. Choose the capture scope, format, and scale

PNG, JPEG, and WebP are supported. You can provide a filename to save the image; without one, the result is returned inline. CSS scale is the default and produces CSS-pixel sizing. Device scale uses the emulated device pixel ratio for a higher-resolution result. Choose based on whether you need viewport-sized output or more image detail. 4. Use screenshots and accessibility snapshots for different jobs
A screenshot shows appearance; it does not give you reliable references for clicking or inspecting page controls. Playwright MCP’s structured accessibility snapshot exposes page structure and element references such as e5. Those references are tied to the current snapshot and can become invalid after navigation or other page changes.

- Use an accessibility snapshot to understand structure, read text, and find elements for interaction.
- After navigation or a meaningful page change, request a fresh snapshot before acting on its references.

The page is not using the expected mobile layout
- Check that the server was launched with the intended device,
--mobile, or--viewport-sizeoption and that the MCP client reconnected after the configuration changed. - Check which browser engine is running. Generic mobile emulation uses different documented profiles for Chromium and WebKit.
- If the goal is only a specific width and height, use explicit viewport dimensions rather than assuming a named preset matches them.
The screenshot is blank or captures the wrong state
- Confirm the navigation tool reached the intended URL and wait for the page or relevant content to render before capturing.
- For state-dependent views, first perform the required navigation or interaction, then take a new screenshot.
- If an element is missing, use a fresh accessibility snapshot to inspect the current page structure rather than relying on an old element reference.
The screenshot tool cannot find an element reference
References are snapshot-specific. Request a new accessibility snapshot after navigation or other page changes, identify the control again, and then interact with the refreshed reference. A screenshot alone does not generate structured interaction references.
A full-page and element capture request fails
These capture scopes are mutually exclusive. Remove the element target for a full-page image, or turn off full-page mode to capture a single element.

The image resolution is not what you expected
Check the scale setting. CSS scale produces CSS-pixel output; device scale uses the emulated device pixel ratio and therefore produces a higher-resolution image. Also confirm whether you requested a viewport capture or full-page capture.

A screenshot made through Playwright MCP shows what the configured browser context rendered at the time of capture. It can help reproduce a viewport-specific layout issue, but it does not establish how a physical phone, its operating system, or a real mobile network behaves. Record the selected browser engine, device profile or viewport dimensions, URL, and capture scope with bug evidence so another developer can reproduce the same emulated setup.
No general capture-time or reliability guarantee is stated in the Playwright documentation cited here. Pages that load slowly or depend on network responses may need an explicit wait appropriate to the page before capture; capture only after the state under investigation is present.
