How to Stop Dropped Frames on YouTube Live

Find out whether YouTube Live dropped frames come from the encoder, source, or outbound connection, then test the right fix without guessing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stop dropped frames on YouTube Live, first find out whether the problem is in your encoder or sources, or in the connection sending the stream to YouTube. Check the encoder’s status and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, then test the outbound connection and adjust the stream profile only if the evidence points there. A high download-speed result alone does not establish that your upload is stable.

What “dropped frames” can mean

A stream that looks bad to viewers does not automatically mean the encoder is dropping frames. The issue may be visible in the encoder output, caused by the source or encoder workload, or arise while the stream travels over your outbound connection. Viewer buffering is another, separate symptom: a viewer can have playback trouble even when your encoder is sending a healthy stream.

Use both the encoder’s own status and the stream-health information in YouTube Live Control Room. The distinction matters because changing bitrate will not fix an overloaded encoder or a poor source, and lowering resolution will not necessarily fix an unstable upload connection.

Diagnose the problem in order

1. Check YouTube stream health and the encoder

  1. Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and check its stream-health indicator, real-time metrics, and any specific error messages.
  2. Check the encoder’s status and error messages at the same time. Note whether it reports dropped frames, encoding overload, or another issue.
  3. Compare what you see in the encoder preview with what appears in YouTube’s preview. If the encoder’s own output is already poor, start with the encoder and source checks below. If the encoder looks healthy, investigate the outbound connection.

Do not treat every viewer report of buffering as proof of sender-side dropped frames. YouTube’s stream metrics describe the incoming stream; a viewer’s playback experience can also be affected by latency and playback conditions.

2. If the encoder output looks or sounds bad

  • Check encoder errors and software state. YouTube advises using a current version of your encoder. Review its status and error messages before changing stream settings.
  • Check CPU load. If the computer is under heavy load while encoding, reduce competing work and test again. High encoder workload is a different problem from an upload connection that cannot sustain the stream.
  • Inspect video and audio sources. Confirm that the source itself is clean and that audio is present and correctly routed. A bad input cannot be repaired by increasing the streaming bitrate.
  • Review a local recording, if you have one. Compare the recording with the encoder preview and YouTube preview. If the same defect is present locally, the cause is likely at or before the encoder rather than in YouTube playback.
  • Try another encoder as a diagnostic. If the archive and encoder do not show the problem clearly, YouTube suggests trying a different encoder to help isolate the cause.

3. If the encoder looks healthy, test the outbound connection

Run an upload connection test and look for interruptions or inconsistent results. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to contact your internet service provider if the test indicates a connection issue. Advertised download speed is not a substitute for checking the upload path used by the live stream.

If you normally use Wi-Fi, compare a test over Ethernet if that is practical. A wired test can help determine whether Wi-Fi stability is part of the problem; it is not a guaranteed fix for every cause of dropped frames. If the upload test continues to show an issue, share the results with your ISP.

Choose a stream profile the connection can sustain

Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following H.264 ranges are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection will remain stable. In the H.264 recommendations published by YouTube Help and accessed in 2026, the recommended bitrate range is 6–17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 3–8 Mbps for 720p60. For 30 fps, YouTube lists 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3–8 Mbps for 720p30.

H.264 profile YouTube-recommended bitrate range
1080p60 6–17 Mbps
1080p30 5–14 Mbps
720p60 3–8 Mbps
720p30 3–8 Mbps

These figures apply to the H.264 profiles shown, not to every codec or profile. YouTube publishes separate minimum and recommended rates for AV1 and H.265; use the current encoder-settings table for those codecs rather than applying the H.264 ranges to them. YouTube’s published encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (not over four seconds), H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and up to 60 fps for RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings. Specifications and labels can change, so check YouTube Help’s current “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” guidance when configuring a new stream.

Set the bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually intend to send, then check that your outbound connection can sustain it. If you need to reduce the load, test a lower bitrate or a less demanding resolution or frame rate. Change one relevant setting at a time where practical, then compare encoder and Live Control Room indicators during another realistic test; this makes it easier to see which change affected the result.

Test before the event and monitor while live

  1. Set up the encoder early enough to troubleshoot before the scheduled stream.
  2. Use representative movement and audio in the test. A static screen or silent test may not reveal problems that appear with the real content.
  3. Start the encoder ahead of the event and check the Live Control Room preview before starting the live stream.
  4. Confirm that video and audio are both present and look and sound right.
  5. During the event, keep checking stream health and the encoder’s status. If the symptom returns, note the displayed error and whether the encoder output or only viewer playback appears affected.

YouTube Help puts the basic advice plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Tell sender-side dropped frames from viewer buffering

If YouTube’s incoming stream and the encoder look healthy but viewers report buffering, do not assume the sender is dropping frames. One factor is latency: lower latency leaves viewers with less read-ahead buffer and may increase playback buffering. That is a trade-off in playback behavior, not by itself evidence of an encoder or upload failure. Check stream health separately from viewer playback reports before changing the encoder profile.
