Check that both devices meet Apple’s requirements, then connect from the Mac’s Displays settings; you can use Sidecar wirelessly or with a USB cable.
Check that your MacBook Pro and iPad support Sidecar
Apple’s current requirements include MacBook Pro models introduced in 2016 or later, running macOS Catalina 10.15 or later. The iPad must run iPadOS 13 or later and be one of these models:

- Any iPad Pro
- iPad (6th generation or later)
- iPad mini (5th generation or later)
- iPad Air (3rd generation or later)
These are Apple’s published compatibility requirements as of 2026. Check your devices’ model and software versions if you are unsure whether they qualify. Apple’s Sidecar requirements

- On your MacBook Pro, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
- Choose Add Display, then select your iPad.
- In Displays, choose whether to extend or mirror the Mac desktop, and adjust the arrangement if needed.
On macOS 12.5 or earlier, use Apple menu > System Preferences instead of System Settings. Apple’s Mac User Guide describes the Add Display workflow and display options: Use your iPad as a second display for your Mac.

Choose an extended or mirrored display
Extend the desktop
Extending gives you additional screen space: you can move windows between the MacBook Pro and iPad displays. In Displays, use the arrangement controls to position the iPad to the left, right, above, or below the Mac display to match where the devices sit on your desk. The pointer then moves between screens in the corresponding direction.
Mirror the desktop
Mirroring shows the same desktop content on the iPad as on the MacBook Pro. Choose this when you want the same view on both screens rather than extra workspace.

Connect wirelessly or with a cable
Wireless Sidecar requirements
For wireless Sidecar, Apple requires both devices to use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication enabled. Turn on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff on both devices, keep them within 10 metres (30 feet), and do not use an internet or mobile connection-sharing setup that Apple identifies as incompatible. These are Apple’s stated requirements; they do not establish that both devices must always be on the same Wi-Fi network for a successful setup. Apple Support
USB Sidecar
You can also connect the iPad to the MacBook Pro with a USB cable. The cable must fit the ports on your particular iPad and MacBook Pro, so check both models before choosing one. If the iPad asks whether to trust the Mac, approve the prompt; Apple requires the iPad to trust the Mac for USB Sidecar. A direct cable connection can also keep the iPad charged.

If the iPad does not appear in Add Display
Work through these checks, especially for a wireless connection:
- Confirm that both devices meet the model and operating-system requirements above.
- Verify that the Mac and iPad are signed in to the same Apple Account and that two-factor authentication is enabled.
- For wireless use, turn on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff on both devices and bring them within 10 metres (30 feet).
- If wireless connection still fails, check that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. Apple lists this as a troubleshooting check; it is not a universal requirement for every Sidecar setup.
- Check whether a VPN is restricting local network connections, which can interfere with device discovery.
- For USB, reconnect the cable and respond to any trust prompt on the iPad.
- Install available macOS and iPadOS updates, then check Add Display again.

Sidecar or Universal Control?
Sidecar makes the iPad act as a display for the Mac desktop, extending or mirroring it. Universal Control is for a different purpose: it lets you use the Mac’s keyboard, mouse, or trackpad to control the iPad’s own apps while each device continues to run its own interface. Choose Sidecar when you want Mac desktop space on the iPad; choose Universal Control when you want to work across separate Mac and iPad apps.

Apple Pencil can interact directly with Sidecar content, including pointing, selecting, drawing, photo editing, and manipulating objects. It is optional; Sidecar works as a second display without it. Apple’s Sidecar guide
