Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo use an HP Thunderbolt Dock, first identify its exact model and confirm that your laptop supports the dock’s connection, video, and charging features. Then follow the setup guide for that dock generation. HP’s G2 and G4 docks have distinct support materials, and their capabilities are not interchangeable.
1. Identify your dock and laptop
Find the model name or product number on the dock or its label, then identify your laptop’s exact model. “HP Thunderbolt Dock” describes a product family; HP provides separate support pages and manuals for products such as the G2 and G4. Start with the HP Thunderbolt Dock support page. For model-specific information, consult HP’s G2 specifications or G4 support materials, as applicable.

Do not use instructions for one generation as a substitute for the guide for another. Open the user guide and setup instructions listed for your exact dock model before connecting it; HP’s model support pages are the starting point for those documents.
2. Check what your laptop’s port supports
A USB-C-shaped connector alone does not establish that a laptop supports Thunderbolt, video output, or charging through the dock. Check the laptop’s specifications and HP’s compatibility information for the relevant protocol support before relying on those features.

- Connectivity Technology: Wired
- Charging Capability: Yes
- Device Supported: Desktop PC
- Device Supported: Notebook
- Cable Length: 3.20 ft
- For Thunderbolt features: verify that the laptop supports the relevant Thunderbolt standard and that the connection uses the appropriate port.
- For USB-C video: verify that the host supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. HP’s G2 notes say a USB-C host needs Thunderbolt or DisplayPort Alt Mode support for the applicable functions.
- For G4 USB-C use: HP describes backward compatibility with USB-C Alt Mode, but functionality and speeds depend on the host’s protocol support.
- For vendor-specific functions: check whether your host is among the HP or supported notebooks required for features such as the dock power button, Wake-on LAN, or MAC Address Pass-Through.
HP’s G2 product information and G4 support page describe these model-specific conditions.
3. Connect the dock using its own guide
- Check the power supply. Use the adapter specified for your dock model. Do not assume that an adapter from another HP dock is suitable.
- Follow the model’s setup instructions. Use the connection order and cable arrangement in the guide for your exact dock. The required sequence can vary by generation and configuration.
- Connect the dock to the laptop’s supported port. Use the port and cable specified by the guide, and confirm the host’s protocol support if video, networking, or other functions are unavailable.
- Attach your peripherals and displays. Use the dock guide to confirm which ports support the devices and display arrangement you intend to use.
- Check the laptop’s charging behavior. If the laptop is not charging adequately, compare its power requirements with the dock’s documented output and follow HP’s guidance for that model.
4. Understand charging limits
Charging depends on the dock configuration and the laptop’s power needs. HP lists up to 100 W through a single USB-C cable for the cited G2 configuration. HP says systems that require more than 100 W need a separate notebook AC adapter; certain higher-power configurations use a combo cable. Check the G2 documentation for your particular host and cable arrangement rather than treating 100 W as a guarantee for every laptop.

- COMPATIBILITY WITHOUT CONSTRAINTS – Designed with universal compatibility in mind, this dock works with both HP and non-HP USB-C- and Thunderbolt-enabled laptops (1).
- CLEAR THE CLUTTER – Avoid a messy desk as the dock cuts down on extra cords or easily tangled wires.
- SINGLE-CABLE SOLUTION – Add your accessories and up to three displays to the dock (3). Then simply connect it to your laptop through a single USB-C cable to access your devices and charge your PC (1).
- SMALL FOOTPRINT – Reclaim your desk with a compact dock that takes up only 5 x 5 inches of space.
- EASILY MANAGE YOUR ENVIRONMENT – Help secure and remotely manage your laptop as this dock gives you more access and visibility with advanced network manageability features (1).
HP’s G4 support materials identify a 120 W dock model and list its supplied power components. That figure describes the dock model, not a universal charging amount delivered to every connected laptop. Verify the host’s requirements and the dock’s model-specific power information on HP’s G4 support page.
5. If a feature does not work
- No display: confirm that the laptop port supports Thunderbolt or DisplayPort Alt Mode as required, then check the dock guide for the display ports and configuration supported by your model.
- Charging is missing or insufficient: verify that you are using the specified power supply and cable, and check whether your laptop requires its own AC adapter.
- Ethernet or audio behaves differently on a non-HP Windows laptop: HP notes that some non-HP Windows systems may require separately installed Ethernet and audio drivers for specific G2 functionality.
- Using macOS with a G2: HP says it does not provide those drivers for macOS. Do not assume that Windows-specific driver instructions apply.
- Power button, Wake-on LAN, or MAC Address Pass-Through is unavailable: check the G4 host restrictions; HP limits some of these features to HP or supported notebooks.
Compare the laptop model, operating system, and port capabilities with the notes for your dock before concluding that the dock is defective. For model-specific support, use HP’s Thunderbolt Dock family page, G2 specifications, or G4 support materials.
