How to Use an Android Phone with a Windows PC Without Phone Link

Transfer files between Android and Windows without Phone Link using USB, Quick Share, cloud access, or Syncthing for ongoing folder synchronization.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can transfer files between an Android phone and a Windows PC without Phone Link: connect by USB and choose File Transfer for a direct copy, or use Google Quick Share to send files wirelessly between nearby compatible devices. For files you want available on both devices over time, use cloud storage; for ongoing folder synchronization, consider Syncthing.

Choose the right way to connect

What you need Approach Trade-off
Copy files directly without wireless setup USB cable and Android File Transfer mode The cable must support data, and the phone must be unlocked with File Transfer selected. Google’s USB instructions
Send files wirelessly between nearby devices Google Quick Share for Windows Requires compatible Windows hardware and software, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and attention to device visibility. Samsung PCs should use Samsung’s Quick Share app. Google Quick Share requirements and Android Help
Access the same cloud files on both devices Upload files through a Google Account Requires an account and internet access; it is not a direct local copy. Google’s file-transfer guidance
Use Microsoft’s linked-device features Phone Link and Link to Windows Pairing and permissions are required. These features are optional, not prerequisites for USB or Quick Share. Microsoft’s transfer guide
Keep selected folders synchronized over time Syncthing Both devices need configuration, including device IDs and shared folders. Syncthing’s setup guide

Transfer files with a USB cable

USB is a straightforward choice for a one-time copy or a batch of files. It does not require pairing the devices or signing into a cloud account, but the phone must be unlocked and connected with a data-capable cable.

  1. Unlock the Android phone and connect it to the Windows PC with a USB cable.
  2. On the phone, tap the notification that says Charging this device via USB.
  3. Under Use USB for, choose File Transfer.
  4. Use the file-transfer window that opens in Windows to browse and drag files between the phone and PC.
  5. Eject the phone from Windows before unplugging it.

Google notes that some USB cables can charge a phone but cannot transfer files. If Windows does not show the phone, try a different cable first. Google also recommends checking automatic hardware detection, restarting both devices, and updating Android. See Google’s complete USB steps and troubleshooting.

Send files wirelessly with Quick Share

Quick Share sends files between Android and compatible Windows PCs without a cable. Google’s Windows app is intended for non-Samsung PCs; for a Samsung PC, Google directs users to Samsung’s Quick Share app in the Microsoft Store. Check Google’s Quick Share requirements before installing: Google specifies a 64-bit Windows 10 or later PC, or Windows 11 or later for ARM-based devices. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must both be enabled.

  1. Install the appropriate Quick Share app for the Windows PC.
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices, and keep them nearby.
  3. Choose the files to share and select the receiving device.
  4. Accept the transfer request on the receiving device.

Visibility settings affect whether nearby devices can find a device. Google lists visibility choices including Everyone; use the setting needed to make the transfer, then restore a more restricted setting if you opened visibility for discovery. The receiver must accept the transfer before it begins. Google also notes that a Bluetooth Low Energy Extended Advertising limitation can affect discoverability on some networks. See Google’s Android Quick Share guidance.

Use cloud access or ongoing synchronization when appropriate

Cloud files for access from either device

Uploading files through a Google Account can make them available on both the phone and PC. This is useful when the devices are not together or you want continued access to the same cloud files. It depends on internet access and account access, and differs from copying files directly over USB. Google includes account-based file access in its file-transfer guidance.

Syncthing for folders that should stay shared

Syncthing is designed for maintaining shared folders across devices, rather than sending a single file once. Its setup guide calls for configuring each device’s ID and selecting which folders to share. The documentation notes that community-developed builds exist for Windows, Android, and other platforms; it does not establish a current first-party Android distribution or a specific installation channel. Consult Syncthing’s getting-started guide when choosing builds and setting up devices.

When Phone Link is still useful

Phone Link and Link to Windows are optional Microsoft features for readers who want a paired-device workflow. Microsoft describes sending content from Android through Link to Windows – Send to PC in the Share Drawer; transferred items can appear in the phone’s Download folder. What to expect from Quick Share

Google reported in 2023 that more than 50 million files had been transferred between PC and Android devices since launch. That is a historical cumulative usage figure, not a current user count or a performance benchmark. Google’s Android Help describes the feature this way: “You can send and receive files between your Android device and Windows computer with Quick Share.” Google’s 2023 announcement and Android Help.
