How to Use an Android Game Controller as a Mouse Pointer

Google documents gamepad button and joystick swaps on Android, but not mapping a controller to the system mouse pointer. Here are the distinct options and their limits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s Android Help does not document a built-in setting that turns a game controller’s buttons or joystick into mouse-pointer movement. Android does have controller settings for certain assignment swaps, plus separate accessibility tools for pointer control with a physical keyboard and for scanning screen items. Those features solve different problems; none of the cited Google instructions says a gamepad can drive the Android pointer. That leaves room for device-specific or third-party options, but their availability is not established here.

Does Android map a game controller to the mouse pointer?

Not in the controller settings documented by Google. Android Help explains how to connect a wired or Bluetooth game controller and customize certain button and joystick assignments. It describes swapping two button assignments or swapping the left and right joysticks; it does not describe assigning a joystick axis to move the system pointer, or assigning a controller button to click it. See Google’s Android controller settings instructions.

That is a limit of what the cited documentation establishes, not proof that controller-to-pointer operation is impossible on every Android device. The help page does not settle what a particular manufacturer, Android build, controller, or third-party remapping tool may support. If you need a definite answer for a particular setup, you will need to check those exact components rather than assume that Android’s standard controller settings include pointer mapping.

It also helps to distinguish a mouse pointer from a game’s on-screen controls. A game can respond to a connected controller without moving Android’s system cursor. Similarly, changing which gamepad button performs another gamepad action is not the same as turning that input into a mouse movement or click.

What Android’s documented controller settings can do

Google documents two connection routes: use a compatible cable for a wired controller, or pair a wireless controller over Bluetooth. For Bluetooth pairing, put the controller in pairing mode, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, and select the controller. The wording and availability of menus can vary by device.

After connection, the documented settings location depends on how the controller is connected:

  • Wired: Settings > System > Game controllers.
  • Bluetooth: Settings > Connected devices > [controller] > Game Controller settings.

The available customizations described by Google are limited to swapping any two button assignments or swapping the left and right joysticks. These options can help when a gamepad’s layout is inconvenient, but the page does not list mouse-pointer movement, pointer clicks, or mouse-axis assignment as controller actions. The exact labels or availability may differ across devices.

How the alternatives differ

Android has documented features that may sound similar to gamepad-to-mouse mapping. Their input devices and outcomes are different, so choosing the right one depends on whether you need a continuously moving cursor, keyboard-operated pointer, or accessible way to select on-screen items.

Approach Input documented by Google What it does Does it document gamepad pointer control?
Android game controller settings Wired or Bluetooth game controller Connects a controller; allows certain button and joystick assignment swaps. No. Pointer movement and mouse actions are not described in the controller settings instructions.
Mouse Keys Physical keyboard; Android 16 and up Moves and operates the mouse pointer with keyboard keys. No. Google describes keyboard input, not controller input.
Switch Access External switches or a keyboard connected over USB or Bluetooth Scans, highlights, and selects screen items; point scan can target a location. No. It is a scanning and selection workflow, not documented continuous joystick control.
Google Play Games Controls Editor Keyboard keys, for mobile games played on PC Maps keys to touchscreen controls in supported PC gameplay, including virtual joysticks. No. It addresses games played on PC, not pointer remapping on an Android phone.

Use Mouse Keys if you have a physical keyboard

Mouse Keys is Google’s documented Android feature for moving the mouse pointer with a keyboard. It is available on Android 16 and up, and the Physical keyboard accessibility setting appears only when a physical keyboard is attached. This is therefore an option for someone who can connect a keyboard, not a documented way to use a game controller as the pointer input.

Google says Mouse Keys can use primary keyboard keys or the numeric keypad to move the pointer. It also supports clicking, holding a mouse button, scrolling, and adjusting pointer acceleration and maximum speed. Once Mouse Keys is enabled, the documented shortcut is Action + Alt + 4. The names of settings and the keyboard’s available keys can affect what you see on your device; consult Google’s physical keyboard accessibility instructions for the feature’s documented controls.

8Bitdo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller for Android devices, Black
  • Compatible with Android devices and fits mobile devices ranging from 100mm to 170mm in length.
  • Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.
  • 2 Pro back paddle buttons
  • Profile button. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings. Turbo function.

If your goal is to operate the system cursor without touching the screen, this is the closest documented Android option among the features covered here—but it requires a keyboard and does not establish support for a gamepad. Do not expect a controller connected in Android’s game controller menu to become a Mouse Keys device.

Use Switch Access for scanning and selecting screen items

Switch Access is an accessibility feature for controlling a device with external switches or a keyboard, including devices connected by USB or Bluetooth. Rather than freely steering a pointer, it scans on-screen items and highlights them until the user selects one. Google summarizes the behavior as: “Switch Access scans the items on your screen, highlighting each item in turn, until you make a selection.” Read the Switch Access overview and setup instructions for setup and supported input concepts.

Google also describes point scanning, which moves lines across the screen so a user can choose a location and invoke actions such as tap, swipe, or zoom. That can help select a particular screen location when ordinary item scanning is not suitable. It remains a scanning interaction: Google’s Switch Access tips do not describe it as an analog-stick cursor that follows continuous gamepad movement.

Switch Access may be relevant if your underlying need is to select or activate Android interface items using accessibility switches. It is not a substitute for a mouse when the required behavior is continuous cursor movement, and the cited documentation does not say that a standard game controller can serve as one of its switches. Do not infer compatibility merely because both devices have buttons.

Why the Google Play Games Controls Editor is a different feature

The Controls Editor is easy to confuse with Android-wide input mapping because it uses the language of assigning controls. Google Play Help describes it for mobile games played on a PC: it maps keyboard keys to touchscreen controls, including virtual joystick controls, for games that are not optimized for that setup. It does not describe mapping a gamepad connected to an Android phone to the phone’s mouse pointer. See Google Play Games Controls Editor help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The platform distinction matters. A keyboard-to-touch mapping in a PC game environment is not evidence that Android’s phone interface can translate a Bluetooth controller’s stick into a system cursor. Nor should this tool be treated as a general Android accessibility pointer feature.

Choose an option based on the job you need done

  • You want Android’s cursor to follow a gamepad stick: Google’s controller settings do not document this mapping. Check documentation for your specific device and controller, but treat support as unverified until you confirm it on that setup.
  • You can use a physical keyboard and need pointer movement: Mouse Keys is the documented option on Android 16 and up, with the physical keyboard attached.
  • You need to select interface items with accessibility input: Switch Access offers item scanning and point scanning using documented switch or keyboard inputs.
  • You are playing a mobile game on a PC: The Controls Editor may be relevant for mapping keyboard keys to touch controls, but it is not for Android phone pointer mapping.
  • You only need to alter gamepad button or stick assignments: Inspect the controller settings available for your wired or Bluetooth connection; Google documents button-pair swaps and left/right joystick swaps.

Troubleshoot the setup you can verify

The controller will not pair or appear

For a Bluetooth connection, put the controller into pairing mode, then use Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device and select it from the available devices. For a wired connection, Google’s instructions call for a compatible cable. If the device does not show the documented controller settings, menu availability can vary; the cited guidance does not establish support for every controller-device combination.

The controller connects, but no cursor moves

A successful connection confirms that Android has connected a controller; it does not demonstrate pointer mapping. Check the controller settings location for the connection type and review the available button and joystick swaps. If there is no pointer assignment in the device’s menus, Google’s standard controller instructions provide no further gamepad-to-pointer setup path.

Mouse Keys does not appear

Google’s stated conditions are Android 16 or later and an attached physical keyboard for the Physical keyboard accessibility setting to appear. A game controller alone does not satisfy the documented keyboard requirement. If the feature’s controls are unfamiliar, use the official keyboard accessibility guide rather than assuming that gamepad buttons can trigger them.

Switch Access highlights items instead of moving a free cursor

That behavior matches the feature’s documented purpose: scanning and selecting items. Point scanning lets you target a location through moving lines, but it is not described as analog pointer movement. If the task requires a cursor that tracks a joystick continuously, Switch Access is not documented as providing that interaction.
