There is no dependable universal annual cost for running and maintaining a robot mower. Your total depends on the mower, lawn size, mowing schedule, electricity tariff, replacement blades, battery life, installation design and whether you pay for dealer service. Budget for each separately, and treat the purchase price as an upfront cost—not an annual running cost.
What counts as the cost of owning a robot mower?
A useful budget has two parts: the initial purchase and installation, then the costs that arise while you own and operate the mower. Combining them into one annual figure can obscure the difference between a one-time purchase and recurring expenses.

For ongoing ownership, allow for electricity, replacement blades, eventual battery replacement, seasonal storage or preparation, optional dealer service, and repairs or installation-related parts if needed. Not every owner will incur every item each year. Electricity and blades may recur during ordinary use; a battery is an eventual, model-dependent expense; and service or repair depends on the mower, the owner’s choices and local prices.

How to estimate your electricity cost
Electricity cost depends on how much energy the mower uses and what you pay per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Flymo gives one model-family example: an EasiLife maintaining a 500 m² lawn uses roughly 4 kWh per month. The FAQ does not state a year for that figure. It is not an industry average, nor a guarantee for a different lawn, mower or schedule.
Use this formula for your own estimate:
Annual electricity cost = estimated monthly kWh × months operated × your price per kWh
For example, the Flymo figure gives the energy-use part of the calculation: roughly 4 kWh per month for the stated EasiLife and lawn area. To turn it into a cost, multiply by the months you expect to run the mower and your electricity tariff. The resulting estimate still applies only if that monthly consumption is a reasonable match for your own use.

Make the estimate fit your lawn and tariff
- Find a consumption figure for the exact model, if available. Check the manufacturer’s documentation and note the lawn area and operating assumptions attached to it. If no figure is published, do not substitute another model’s consumption as though it were yours.
- Choose the number of operating months. Use the period you actually plan to mow rather than assuming year-round operation. Seasonal conditions and your schedule affect this input.
- Use your tariff. Take the price per kWh from your electricity plan or bill. If your tariff changes by time of day, use a rate that reflects when charging is likely to occur, or calculate with the relevant rates if you know them.
- Multiply the inputs. Keep the units consistent: kWh per month × months gives annual kWh; annual kWh × currency per kWh gives an estimated annual electricity cost.
This is an estimate, not a fixed bill. If the manufacturer’s consumption figure describes a different lawn size or usage pattern, the calculation will not predict your actual consumption precisely. A careful budget should preserve that qualification rather than presenting a precise-looking total unsupported by matching inputs.

Budget for blades as a recurring consumable
Robot mower blades wear and need replacement. Husqvarna notes that worn blades can cause uneven cuts, increase battery and energy use, and reduce mowing efficiency. The replacement interval varies with mowing frequency, lawn size, grass type and seasonal growth, so a single schedule cannot be assumed for every garden.
To estimate this line item, check the replacement interval and blade compatibility for your exact mower, then find the current price of the correct blade set in your market. Multiply the cost per set by the number of sets you expect to use over your mowing season. Treat that as a model-specific planning estimate, not a universal annual allowance.
Compatibility matters: blade shape, mounting and product family can differ. A replacement listing, such as the Landroid blade page from Worx, is relevant only when the listing matches the owner’s mower. Confirm the model before buying rather than comparing prices for blades that may not fit.
Plan for an eventual battery expense
A battery is not necessarily an annual purchase, but it can become a significant ownership cost. Flymo estimates an EasiLife battery lifespan of approximately 2–4 years, depending on lawn size and operating hours. That estimate is specific to EasiLife; it should not be generalized to other mower brands or models.

For your own mower, verify that a compatible replacement battery is available and check its current local price. If you want to include the expense in an annual planning budget, divide the replacement price by the expected years of service for that model. This annualized amount is a way to set money aside; it is not a bill charged every year, and the actual replacement date may differ from the estimate.
Do not use the EasiLife lifespan range as a promise about another mower’s battery. If the manufacturer does not state an expected lifespan, the available figures do not support a precise annual battery allowance. You can still note the replacement price as a possible future cost, but distinguish it from costs with a known recurring interval.
Installation design can affect repair and setup costs
Installation-related costs depend partly on how the mower defines the lawn. Traditional Husqvarna Automower models use physical boundary wire. Some models support EPOS virtual boundaries, but Husqvarna notes that physical wire may be useful where satellite coverage is poor. These approaches are not interchangeable for every property or model.

They are conditional costs, not a necessary annual purchase for every owner. A virtual-boundary option should not be assumed to eliminate all installation or connectivity costs.

Before buying, compare the installation requirements with the layout of your lawn and the mower’s supported setup. Include only parts or work that apply to that design. The available evidence does not establish standard prices for installation materials, professional installation or repairs, so use local quotes and the exact model’s requirements rather than a generic allowance.
Include winter storage and optional service
Seasonal care may add either owner time or a paid service charge. Husqvarna recommends storing the mower, charging station and power supply indoors for winter. It also recommends dealer service for Automower. Its listed service can include cleaning, diagnostics, wear parts, blade replacement, and battery and safety checks.
A service recommendation is not the same as a mandatory annual charge. If you plan to use a dealer, ask what the local service covers, which parts are extra, whether blade replacement is included, and whether the quoted price recurs each season. Those details determine whether a dealer visit replaces separate maintenance spending or adds to it.
If you prepare and store the equipment yourself, budget any supplies or parts you actually need and follow the model’s instructions. Do not assume a service package includes every repair or consumable. The cited service description names possible work but does not provide a price or establish a universal schedule.

Build a model-specific ownership estimate
Use the table as a checklist. Enter your own current local prices and model details; where the cost or interval is not stated by the manufacturer, verify it rather than filling the gap with a market-wide guess.
| Cost item | How to estimate it | What changes the amount |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | Record the mower’s purchase price separately from ongoing ownership. | Model and local retail price; no universal price is established here. |
| Electricity | Monthly kWh × operating months × local price per kWh. | Model consumption, lawn area, schedule, operating season and tariff. Flymo’s roughly 4 kWh/month example applies to EasiLife maintaining a 500 m² lawn. |
| Blades | Expected number of compatible blade sets × current price per set. | Mowing frequency, lawn size, grass type, seasonal growth, model and local price. |
| Battery | Replacement price divided by expected years of service only if you want an annualized savings target. | Model-specific lifespan, replacement availability and local price. Flymo’s approximately 2–4 years applies to EasiLife and depends on lawn size and operating hours. |
| Installation or repair parts | Include only the wire, connectors, service or repairs your installation and mower require. | Wire-guided versus supported virtual-boundary setup, property conditions, damage and local labor or parts costs. |
| Dealer service and winter preparation | Add the local quoted charge if you choose a service; check what work and parts are included. | Dealer, location, service scope and whether the service is seasonal or optional. |
Keep one-time, recurring and occasional costs distinct
For a useful annual operating estimate, total the electricity, blades, any service you intend to buy, and repairs you can reasonably anticipate for your own installation. Keep the purchase price outside that total. Show battery replacement separately unless you deliberately choose to annualize it for a savings plan. This makes clear which amount is a likely expense during the year and which is a future contingency.
When a cost interval is uncertain, present a range only when the model’s own guidance supports it. Otherwise, describe the item as a potential cost and state that the interval or price must be checked for the exact mower. Avoid adding a precise annual total if you do not have the model’s relevant consumption and replacement details, your operating season, and local prices.

A low purchase price alone does not establish a low ownership cost. Compare models on inputs that affect the budget you will actually pay:
- Electricity use: Look for consumption figures for a similar lawn area and schedule, not just a number detached from its conditions.
- Blade cost and replacement needs: Check the compatible blade price and the model’s guidance for replacement. Consider how your mowing conditions may affect wear.
- Battery replacement: Confirm that a compatible battery is sold for the model and find its current price. Use a lifespan estimate only if it is stated for that product.
- Installation method: Identify whether the model requires physical boundary wire or supports virtual boundaries, and assess whether the relevant setup suits your property.
- Service choice: Compare the scope and local price of optional dealer maintenance with the work and parts you would otherwise handle yourself.
Compare like with like: similar lawn area, operating season, electricity tariff and service assumptions. If one model’s published energy figure is for a different lawn size, or one service quote includes blades while another does not, the numbers are not directly comparable until you adjust for those differences.
Why a single annual price is usually misleading
An annual figure can be useful for a particular owner, but only when its inputs are visible. The Flymo electricity example does not establish the energy use of all robot mowers; the EasiLife battery estimate does not establish battery life for other products; and Husqvarna’s service recommendation does not state a universal service price. Blade wear likewise depends on the way and place the mower is used.
For a personal estimate, specify the model, lawn size, operating months, electricity rate, blade price and expected replacement needs, whether you will use dealer service, and any installation parts that apply. If those inputs are missing, a line-item budget is more honest and more useful than an unsupported market-wide annual total.
