The override changes the browser’s user-agent configuration; it does not guarantee a particular page layout or bypass a site’s bot protections.
Set the user agent before navigation
A browser context is the right place to configure the user agent: pages created from it use that context’s settings. Choose the string for the browser identity you want to test. If the goal is to reproduce a device rather than change only the user-agent string, also configure the relevant device settings, especially the viewport.

The following is an illustrative Playwright example using the documented context and screenshot APIs. Adapt it to the Playwright package and runtime used by your agent; it is not a tested script.

Choose the right emulation settings
A user-agent override is one part of browser emulation, not a complete device profile. A device preset can set the viewport and other emulation parameters as well as a user agent. Playwright notes that its Desktop Chrome preset uses a Windows-specific user-agent string; its guide also shows how to unset the preset user agent when you want the host platform’s own string.
- Testing a particular user-agent string: set
userAgentexplicitly in the context. - Testing a device layout: select a documented device preset or set the relevant viewport and other required emulation options too.
- Checking what a site serves: treat the result as an observation of that site under the configured browser conditions, not a guarantee that every server or client-side feature will respond in a particular way.

Wait for the page state you need
Navigate, then wait for the content that matters to your capture. There is no universal wait duration that fits every site: a mostly static page and an application that fills in content asynchronously may need different handling. If the screenshot is missing expected content, inspect the page state rather than assuming that changing the user agent will make it appear.

Capture the viewport, an element, or the full page
Choose the capture area based on what the agent needs to inspect:
- Viewport: the currently visible screen, useful for checking the initial layout.
- Element: a specific component, useful when the task concerns one region of the page.
- Full page: the page beyond the current viewport, useful for below-the-fold content.
Playwright’s screenshot tooling documents these capture modes and options such as image type and filename. Its guidance distinguishes screenshots, which show visual layout and content such as charts or canvas, from accessibility snapshots, which are more useful for reading structure, text, and interaction references. Use the view that answers the agent’s question; they complement rather than replace each other. See Playwright screenshot tools.
Use an agent CLI or MCP integration
An agent-connected browser may expose screenshot actions as tools instead of letting you call page.screenshot() directly. In that case, configure the browser context before opening the page if the integration supports it, navigate, wait for the required state, and invoke its screenshot tool.

Playwright’s agent CLI documents these screenshot commands:
screenshotcaptures the current page.screenshot [target]captures a target.screenshot --filename=<f>sets the output filename.screenshot --type=<png|jpeg|webp>selects the image type.screenshot --full-pagecaptures the full page.
Check the installed CLI’s command help and the integration’s own documentation for how it configures the browser and returns the result. High-resolution output uses device pixels, so its image coordinates may not match the CSS-pixel coordinates used by mouse commands. See Playwright Screenshots & PDF.
Understand what a custom user agent does—and does not do
Changing the user agent does not mean the browser has adopted every property of the device represented by the string, and it does not guarantee that a site will serve a specific version of its page. Pair it with viewport or other emulation settings when those matter.

It is also not a way to defeat bot controls. Cloudflare’s Browser Run documentation is explicit: “The userAgent parameter does not bypass bot protection. Requests from Browser Run will always be identified as a bot.” Respect a site’s access controls and terms; do not treat a different user-agent string as permission to evade them. Other implementation and hosting options
Puppeteer
Puppeteer also documents a Page.screenshot() API, so it is another option if your agent already uses Puppeteer. The available material establishes screenshot capability, not a performance or image-fidelity winner between Puppeteer and Playwright. See Puppeteer’s screenshot API.

Hosted browser execution
A hosted browser can help when you need remote execution or repeated captures without running the browser locally. Cloudflare Browser Run documents headless browsers, screenshots, browser sessions, Playwright integration, and an AI-agent browsing use case; it distinguishes simple stateless screenshot tasks from browser sessions that provide fuller control. Its pricing page currently states that Workers Free includes 10 minutes of browser time per day and Workers Paid includes 10 hours per month before additional charges. Those are provider terms that can change, so check the current Cloudflare Browser Run pricing before planning a workload. Cloudflare also documents that its Browser Run requests remain identified as bot traffic even with a custom user agent.

Troubleshooting incomplete or unexpected screenshots
- The page still looks like desktop: a user-agent string alone may not reproduce a mobile device. Check the context’s viewport and other relevant emulation settings.
- The screenshot is blank or content is missing: check whether navigation completed and whether the specific content rendered before capture. Choose an appropriate wait condition for the page rather than relying on a universal delay.
- The agent cannot set the user agent: its browser integration may not expose context configuration. This method requires support for setting the context before navigation; use an integration that exposes that control.
- Bot checks still appear: changing the user agent does not bypass bot protection. Use authorized access rather than attempting to disguise the automation.
- Image coordinates do not match mouse coordinates: check whether the screenshot is in device pixels while the interaction tool uses CSS pixels, particularly with high-resolution output.
- You need to understand text or structure, not appearance: inspect an accessibility snapshot or DOM-oriented view alongside the screenshot.
