Use the sitemap to build a reviewed list of page URLs, then have a browser automation agent visit each URL and save a screenshot. A sitemap identifies pages and other site resources; it does not capture them. For a reliable batch, decide which URLs belong in scope, choose viewport or full-page shots, use predictable filenames, and record each page’s result so failures can be retried.
What you need before starting
A sitemap is a URL source, not a screenshot tool. Google Search Central defines it as “a file where you provide information about the pages, videos, and other files on your site, and the relationships between them.” Google’s sitemap overview explains its purpose.

- The sitemap URL, and permission to access the pages you plan to capture.
- A browser automation setup, such as Playwright. Its Page API supports navigation and screenshot capture: Playwright Page API.
- A destination directory with enough space for the images.
- A decision about which page URLs to include and whether you need viewport, full-page, or element captures.
Prepare and review the sitemap URL queue
- Find the sitemap. Use the site’s published sitemap location when known. Inspect whether the file lists page URLs directly or points to additional sitemap files. Do not assume every entry is a page intended for a screenshot.
- Select the pages in scope. Filter out resources or URLs that are outside the task. Where multiple URLs serve the same content, choose the preferred URL rather than capturing every duplicate. Google’s sitemap-building guidance recommends using preferred URLs for content available at multiple URLs.
- Decide how to handle URL variations. Set an explicit policy for redirects, query strings, locale variants, and repeated content. Keep variants when they are intentionally distinct; otherwise, normalize and deduplicate before the browser run.
- Show the agent the queue before a large run. Ask it to report the selected URLs and a small sample of output filenames for review. A sitemap may contain more URLs than you intend to capture.
The cited Google pages establish sitemap purpose and preferred-URL guidance; they are not a complete specification for parsing every sitemap index or deciding how a particular site’s URL variants should be treated.

Choose one mode deliberately for the run, or record the mode per URL if different pages require different outputs. Full-page captures can be much taller than viewport images, so check your output and storage needs before a large run.

Give the AI agent a bounded capture task
Ask the agent to perform two separate jobs: extract and review the URL queue, then visit each approved URL and save the selected screenshot. Playwright’s quick-start workflow uses browser open, snapshot, interaction, and screenshot steps; its documentation does not prescribe one universal sitemap parser, readiness condition, or end-to-end AI-agent workflow.
- Parse the supplied sitemap URL or URLs and list the page URLs to process.
- Apply the agreed inclusion, normalization, and deduplication rules.
- Present the queue and a few proposed output names for review before running a large batch.
- For each approved URL, navigate in the browser, wait for a site-appropriate readiness condition, and capture the agreed target.
- Save each result using a deterministic filename and report successes and failures separately.
Do not treat the agent’s completion message as proof that every page was captured. Check that the expected files exist and that the reported failures are actionable. For pages that require interaction, use a browser snapshot to locate controls before acting; screenshots are for visual inspection, while snapshots expose page structure for interaction. Use filenames and a manifest that support retries
Give each image a stable name based on a sanitized URL path plus an index or short URL hash. This helps prevent two different URLs from silently overwriting one another and makes reruns easier to compare. Playwright CLI supports a custom screenshot filename; see its screenshot options.
Keep a simple manifest alongside the images. This is a practical audit pattern, not a format mandated by Playwright.

On a retry, target failed rows rather than rerunning the entire sitemap. Keep the original URL in the manifest even if the browser redirects, so you can trace the result back to the sitemap entry.
Control batch size and page readiness
There is no single readiness wait that fits every site. Choose a condition suited to the pages being captured: for example, wait for a site-specific element when its appearance signals that the relevant content is ready. Record the condition in the agent instructions and verify the output for pages that load content dynamically.

Start with a small sample before increasing batch size. Limit parallel browser work to what the site and capture host can handle, and respect the site’s access requirements. The cited Playwright and Google documentation does not establish a universal concurrency limit or legal rule. If pages fail intermittently, reduce parallelism and retry only failed URLs; if the images are consistently incomplete, adjust the readiness condition and review the affected pages.

Troubleshoot incomplete or failed captures
- No images were saved: Check that the agent completed the browser run and that the destination directory exists and is writable. Ask for a per-URL result list rather than relying on a general completion statement.
- Some sitemap URLs are missing: Review the queue-building step. The sitemap may point to other sitemap files, or the agent may have filtered URLs under your inclusion rules. Compare the manifest with the reviewed queue.
- Images show a loading state or missing content: The chosen readiness condition may be too early for that page. Wait for an appropriate page-specific signal and inspect a sample before rerunning the affected URLs.
- One image overwrote another: The naming scheme is not unique enough. Include a stable URL-derived identifier, such as an index or short hash, in addition to a sanitized path.
- A full-page image is unexpectedly large: The selected mode captures the full scrollable page. Use viewport mode if only the visible screen is needed, or verify that the page’s long content belongs in the artifact.
- Pages fail intermittently in a batch: Reduce parallel work, log the failed URLs, and retry those rows. No universal concurrency setting is established by the cited documentation.
- The agent clicks the wrong control: Have it inspect an accessibility snapshot to identify page structure before interaction, then use a screenshot to verify visual state. See the Playwright CLI quick start.
