Extensions are supported in this documented workflow only in Chromium with a persistent context; Playwright recommends its bundled Chromium because Chrome and Edge removed the command-line flags needed to sideload extensions. If the extension or sign-in state lives in your existing browser profile, use an agent product that explicitly supports sharing that page instead.
Choose the browser session before you capture
There are two distinct ways an AI agent might work with an extension-enabled page. Choose based on whether you need a repeatable automation setup or the state of a browser tab you already use.

| Approach | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated Playwright browser | Repeatable scripts, testing, or a workflow you may run in CI | Launch bundled Chromium with a persistent context, load the extension, and confirm its effect on the target site. |
| User-shared page | A task requiring an existing tab’s cookies, storage, or sign-in state | Confirm the agent product supports sharing that page and that the extension is available in the controlled session. An isolated agent browser does not automatically inherit your usual browser state. |
Agent integrations are product-specific: documentation for one browser agent does not establish that another can access arbitrary installed extensions. VS Code documents both isolated agent-opened pages and a user-shared-page route; Cloudflare documents its own isolated browser sessions. Neither fact guarantees extension compatibility across all agents. VS Code browser tools and sessions; Cloudflare Browser Run.

Load an extension in Playwright’s Chromium
Install Playwright and ensure the extension directory is available locally. The extension must be compatible with the Chromium version and have any required permissions or host access for the target site. The following Node.js script adapts Playwright’s documented launch pattern; it has not been verified with a particular extension.
#1 Best Overall
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
const path = require('path');
(async () => {
const extensionPath = path.resolve('./my-extension');
const context = await chromium.launchPersistentContext('./browser-profile', {
channel: 'chromium',
args: [
`--disable-extensions-except=${extensionPath}`,
`--load-extension=${extensionPath}`,
],
});
const page = context.pages()[0] ?? await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'webpage.png', fullPage: true });
await context.close();
})();
Replace ./my-extension with the extension’s unpacked directory and https://example.com with the page to capture. The persistent context is important: Playwright’s extension guide specifies it for this use. The profile directory, ./browser-profile, is separate from your ordinary Chrome or Edge profile; do not expect it to contain your existing cookies or sign-in state. Playwright’s guidance also warns against relying on Chrome or Edge command-line sideload flags for this method. Playwright: Chrome extensions.
Check that the extension is actually working
A successful browser launch does not prove the extension affected the page. Before treating the screenshot as valid, ask the agent to verify the extension is present and active in that controlled context, then confirm its visible effect on the specific page. Permissions, site access settings, or site-specific behavior may prevent an extension from acting even when it is loaded.

For a Manifest V3 extension, Playwright’s guide shows how to wait for its service worker when the workflow needs to inspect or interact with it. The guide notes that an MV3 service worker can be suspended after roughly 30 seconds of inactivity and restarted on demand; a sleeping worker is not, by itself, proof that the extension has failed. Tell the agent what to capture
- Choose the session: specify a fresh automation browser or a user-shared existing page, depending on whether existing cookies or sign-in state are necessary.
- Verify the extension: have the agent confirm it is loaded, permitted, and producing the expected effect in the controlled browser.
- Open the exact URL: navigate to the intended page and wait for the visible content or state relevant to the task. There is no universal readiness check for every site or extension, so define what the agent should observe.
- Select the screenshot scope: capture the viewport for the current screen, the full page for scrollable content, or a specific element or region for a focused component.
- Confirm the result: ask the agent to report the output filename and any extension or session errors. Do not assume a screenshot exists until the tool actually returns or saves it.
A prompt can make those requirements explicit: “Use [fresh Chromium with the extension loaded / the page I share]. Verify the extension is active and has changed the page as expected. Open [exact URL], wait until [visible condition], capture [viewport/full page/element], and report the saved filename or the error.”

Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture
Playwright’s page.screenshot() supports viewport and full-page capture, clipping, masks, PNG/JPEG/WebP output, and CSS-pixel or device-pixel scaling. With fullPage: true, the image covers the full page rather than only the visible viewport. CSS scaling produces one image pixel per CSS pixel; device scaling follows the device pixel ratio and can create a larger image. See Playwright screenshots.
For example, use await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png' }); for the current viewport, or await page.locator('main').screenshot({ path: 'main.png' }); for a selected element. Playwright MCP also documents viewport, selected-element, and full-page screenshots. Screenshots help check visual layout or chart and canvas output; accessibility snapshots are generally more useful for reading text and understanding page structure. Playwright MCP.

Troubleshoot missing extensions and incomplete images
- The extension is missing: the agent may be using an isolated profile. Use the documented extension-loading setup, or share an existing page if the agent product supports that workflow.
- The extension appears loaded but has no effect: check its site permissions, host access, settings, and compatibility with the page. Verify the actual effect rather than relying on the toolbar icon.
- The workflow uses the wrong browser: the documented Playwright extension approach is for Chromium with a persistent context. Use Playwright’s bundled Chromium rather than relying on Chrome or Edge command-line sideload flags.
- The image stops at the visible screen: request
fullPage: trueor an agent tool’s full-page screenshot mode. - The output dimensions are unexpected: choose CSS scaling for one image pixel per CSS pixel or device scaling when device-pixel-ratio output is intended.
- The agent cannot access your signed-in page: an isolated session does not inherit your usual cookies or storage. Use a supported page-sharing mechanism if the agent offers one.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reliability and cost considerations
A local Playwright capture gives you control over browser context and screenshot scope, but you are responsible for keeping Chromium, the extension, permissions, and page readiness in a workable state. An extension that depends on the user’s existing login may require a supported shared-page workflow rather than a fresh profile. No general success rate or capture time is established for these approaches; results depend on the page, extension, and agent integration.
