Use an AI agent with browser automation to capture the page, save the screenshot as a local file, then attach that file to an issue comment with GitHub CLI. The capture and upload are separate steps: browser access does not grant GitHub permission, and attaching a file requires push access to the repository.
Choose what the agent should capture
Playwright MCP’s screenshot tool supports viewport, element, and full-page captures, with PNG, JPEG, or WebP output. Choose the smallest view that communicates the bug or state:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Element: Use a CSS selector when the issue concerns one control or component.
- Viewport: Use this when surrounding layout or nearby content matters.
- Full page: Use this when the complete document is relevant. Playwright MCP does not allow full-page capture together with an element target.
See the Playwright MCP screenshot documentation for the tool’s parameters. Ask the agent to save the result to a known local path, such as ./page.png, that the GitHub CLI can access.
Capture and attach the screenshot with an agent
- Capture: Instruct the agent to open the target URL, reproduce or inspect the relevant state, take the appropriate screenshot, and save it as
./page.png. The exact tool call depends on your agent framework; the cited Playwright MCP documentation describes capture modes and file output, not a universal agent recipe. - Review the file: Confirm that
page.pngexists and shows the intended state. Use a useful filename and alt text that describe the image without exposing sensitive details. - Attach it to the issue: From a terminal authenticated to the repository, run:
gh issue comment ISSUE-NUMBER --body "Screenshot of the page state:" --attach './page.png#Page screenshot'
Replace ISSUE-NUMBER with the issue number. GitHub CLI uploads the local image and adds its uploaded URL to the comment. The text after # supplies alt text.

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
For a comment with more context, put the Markdown image reference in a file:
Observed page state:

Save that as issue-comment.md, then run:
gh issue comment ISSUE-NUMBER --body-file issue-comment.md --attach ./page.png
When the body references the same local file passed to --attach, GitHub CLI rewrites the reference to the uploaded asset URL, preserving the alt text. An attached file not referenced in the body is appended to the comment. See GitHub’s CLI attachment guide.
Check permissions and exposure before uploading
- The CLI must be authenticated for the repository and issue, and GitHub’s documentation says you need push access to attach files.
- Files attached in public repositories can be accessed without authentication. In private or internal repositories, they are viewable only to people with repository access. Treat a public issue screenshot as public material.
- Before capture and upload, check for access tokens, personal data, private page content, or unrelated sensitive information.
- GitHub’s cited attachment guide reports a 10 MB limit for images and GIFs and 25 MB for other files. These thresholds can change; check the current guide if an upload is rejected.
Details on browser-based uploads and visibility are in GitHub’s guide to attaching files.
Use the browser as a manual fallback
If you do not have GitHub CLI available, open the issue, drag the screenshot into the comment box or choose it with the file picker, and wait for the upload to finish. GitHub says the file uploads immediately and the text field is populated with an anonymized URL. Add explanatory text and submit the comment.

Use a workflow artifact when inline attachment is not the goal
An issue attachment is best when readers should see the screenshot in the conversation. If the goal is instead to let workflow users retrieve a generated file, GitHub Agentic Workflows documents publishing screenshots as artifacts, with safe output rules, allowed paths, maximum uploads, and retention days. That creates a workflow artifact rather than an inline issue attachment. See GitHub Agentic Workflows’ Playwright reference.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its MCP tools let AI agents call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. For an API capture, make one GET request and save the response:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Then attach the saved file to the issue with the GitHub CLI command above; ScreenshotNeo captures the page, while GitHub still handles the upload and permissions.

Troubleshoot common handoff failures
The agent captured an image but the CLI cannot find it
Make sure the screenshot was saved to a path accessible from the terminal’s working directory. Check the filename, extension, and relative path; use an absolute path if the agent and terminal use different working directories.
The upload is denied
Check that GitHub CLI is authenticated to the right account and repository, that the issue number is correct, and that your account has push access. Browser automation by itself does not provide repository authorization.
The comment has a link but no inline image
Confirm that the local path in the Markdown reference matches the file passed to --attach. Include the image reference in the body file if you want it placed within the comment text; an unreferenced attachment is appended instead.
The upload is rejected
Check the file size and current GitHub limits. If the image exceeds the applicable limit, capture a smaller region or reduce the image dimensions or file size, then attach the resulting file.

The screenshot shows the wrong page state
Have the agent wait until the target content is visible before capture, and choose the correct scope: element, viewport, or full page. For a selector-specific capture, verify that the selector matches the intended element; full-page capture cannot be combined with a target selector in the documented Playwright MCP tool.
FAQ
Can an AI agent complete the capture and upload without a person?
It can do both when the agent has access to the browser automation tool, local file, authenticated GitHub CLI, and repository permissions. The cited sources document the capture and upload components, not one universal setup for every agent or repository policy.
Does an OpenAI computer-use screenshot automatically become a file for GitHub?
No. OpenAI’s computer-use documentation says screenshots are excluded from API output by default unless screenshot inclusion is enabled. That setting concerns returning or displaying screenshot output; it is separate from saving a local file for upload. See OpenAI’s computer-use guide.
