In Playwright, use a locator’s hover() method; in Selenium, use Actions.moveToElement(). Capture the page rather than just the trigger when the revealed content may sit outside the trigger’s bounds.
What the AI agent needs to do
A screenshot records the browser’s current state. If the pointer has not activated the relevant hover behavior before capture, the image generally will not include the menu or tooltip it reveals. The essential sequence is:

- Identify the element that triggers the content.
- Move the browser pointer onto that element.
- Wait for the intended content to become visible.
- Capture an image with bounds that include the content.
- Check that the saved image actually shows it.
Give an AI agent access to the browser automation runtime and tell it which target to hover and what visible state to wait for. Use a stable locator, such as a link’s accessible name, when possible. The exact locator and wait condition depend on the page; a menu, tooltip, and image preview may expose different roles or selectors.
Capture the hover state with Playwright
Playwright’s locator-based hover() is the recommended approach in its API guidance; the older page-level hover method is discouraged. Locator hover performs actionability checks and scrolls the element into view if needed. The following is an illustrative JavaScript sequence, not a test against a particular website:

If the revealed content is a tooltip rather than a menu, wait for the tooltip’s visible state instead. If a site reveals content only after an animation or network request, wait for an observable condition tied to that content rather than relying on a fixed delay. There is no universal wait duration that works for every website.
Choose screenshot bounds deliberately
page.screenshot() captures the viewport by default. Playwright also supports full-page and locator screenshots. A locator screenshot clips to the matched element; use it only when the revealed content falls within that element’s bounds. Menus and tooltips may be positioned elsewhere in the page, so a page screenshot is safer when their location is uncertain.

Capture the hover state with Selenium
With Selenium, move the pointer to the target using the Actions API, wait for the page’s hover content, and then use WebDriver’s screenshot interface. Selenium documents moveToElement() as moving to the element’s in-view center; the element needs to be in the viewport for this operation.

Use a hosted browser when you need one
Hosted execution is optional; the hover-and-capture workflow can run in an existing Playwright or Selenium setup. BrowserStack Automate is an option when you need hosted browser or device coverage. Its Visual Logs can capture screenshots during test commands and display them in the dashboard. If you need a local image file, BrowserStack’s documentation says to take a screenshot explicitly from the test script.
Troubleshoot missing or clipped hover content
- The screenshot has no menu or tooltip: Confirm the pointer moved to the intended trigger, then wait for the content’s visible state before capture. Do not assume the hover action alone means an animation or network-backed response has finished.
- The trigger cannot be hovered: Check that the locator matches the right element and that the element is interactable. With Selenium, ensure the element is in the viewport before using
moveToElement(). - The panel is cut off: A locator screenshot may include only the trigger’s bounds. Use a page screenshot when the revealed panel is outside those bounds.
- The screenshot is blank or the expected state is uncertain: Save or return the screenshot bytes, then inspect the image and verify the intended content is present. Automation APIs provide the capture operation; they do not guarantee every site will respond as expected.
- A fixed pause works inconsistently: Replace it with a condition that observes the actual tooltip, menu, or preview. Page response times and hover behavior vary.

Use Playwright or Selenium when the screenshot must show an interaction state such as a hover menu, because the browser pointer must activate that state before capture. Choose based on the automation stack you already use, the stability of the target locator, and whether you need a viewport, full-page, or element image. Use hosted execution if you need browser or device coverage; use a URL screenshot API for ordinary page captures that do not require a pointer-driven interaction.
