You do not need to save a screenshot file first. The key distinction is between an image displayed by a browser tool and an actual base64 string in your agent’s response.
Capture screenshot bytes, then encode them
With Playwright, page.screenshot() returns image bytes. In Node.js, those bytes are a Buffer; call toString('base64') and put the result in a named response field. Omitting path keeps the screenshot in memory. The Playwright Page API documents the screenshot options, and the official screenshot guide shows using the returned buffer as base64.

If your agent framework expects a plain string, a different object shape, or an image data URL, adapt the returned value to its documented output schema.
Python version
Python uses the same byte-first approach. The screenshot call is asynchronous, so use it within an async function and encode the bytes as ASCII base64 text:

Choose what part of the page to capture
The capture scope determines what the returned image contains. Playwright supports viewport, full-page, and element captures; choose the smallest scope that gives the caller what it needs.

- Full page: the full scrollable document as a tall screenshot. Set
fullPage: truewhen content below the fold is required. - Element: a specific locator or target element, such as a chart or form. This avoids returning unrelated page content.

Run the capture in an agent workflow
- Create or receive a page. Use the browser tool or automation runtime available to your agent to obtain a Playwright page object.
- Navigate to the requested URL. Wait for the content needed in the image to render. There is no single wait condition that is appropriate for every site: a page with client-rendered content may need a different readiness check than a static page.
- Capture the intended scope. Call
page.screenshot()for the viewport, or provide the relevant options or locator for a full-page or element capture. - Encode the bytes. Convert the screenshot result to base64 using the language-specific example above.
- Return the value under the expected field. Use the receiving agent or API’s output contract. Do not assume that an inline image shown in a tool response is also available as a raw base64 string.
- Add a data-URL prefix only if requested. A data URL includes a media-type prefix before the base64 payload. If the receiver asks for plain base64, return only the encoded string. Use the media type that matches the chosen image format.
Set image format and scale for the destination
PNG, JPEG, and WebP are documented options in the Playwright MCP screenshot tool. The Page API also documents settings for output type, quality, scale, masking, and file path. Format and scale affect image size and fidelity, so select them for the downstream use—for example, whether the recipient needs a crisp image for inspection or a smaller payload. The documentation does not establish one universally best format or scale; confirm which formats and limits the receiving service accepts.

If you need a screenshot for a file or a third-party service instead of a base64 response, Playwright can provide the image as a buffer without writing it to disk. Its screenshot documentation notes that the buffer can be post-processed or passed to another service.
What to check when the result is wrong
- The returned value is not base64: Check that the code encodes the bytes from
page.screenshot(), not a tool’s display label, image URL, or serialized response object. - The caller cannot read the result: Match the framework’s required return type and field name. A framework may expect a plain string, a structured object, or a data URL; there is no universal agent response schema.
- The screenshot shows an incomplete page: The page may not have finished rendering the content you need. Choose a readiness condition suited to that page before capture; documentation does not establish one universal wait strategy.
- The image omits below-the-fold content: Use full-page capture rather than the default viewport capture.
- The image contains too much page: Capture a specific element instead of the whole viewport or document.
- The output is larger or less detailed than expected: Check the format, quality, and scale settings supported by the capture path and the receiving system. The MCP tool distinguishes CSS-pixel and device-pixel scale.
- A base64 payload is rejected: Check whether the receiver expects raw base64 or a data URL, and check its payload limits. The Playwright documentation does not define limits or a universal data-URL contract.
