You can reduce the risks of using an AI agent with text messages by limiting what it can access, giving it one specific task, and checking every proposed message or other consequential action before approval. Texts and linked content may contain instructions intended to manipulate the agent, so treat what it reads as untrusted. Keep passwords, verification codes, and sensitive personal details out of prompts, and verify urgent or suspicious messages through an official channel you find independently. These precautions lower risk; they cannot guarantee safety.
How can a text message manipulate an AI agent?
An AI agent may read messages, links, attachments, calendar entries, or web pages while carrying out a task. Any of that content could contain instructions designed to make the agent ignore your request or take a different action. OpenAI describes this general attack as prompt injection; Apple calls instructions embedded in extra context “indirect prompt injection.” A message the agent reads is information to assess—not authority to change your instructions.

Apple’s developer guidance highlights two ways an attack can affect an agent: “data poisoning,” such as changing the intended recipient, and “action poisoning,” such as steering the agent toward a different action. The risk is especially serious when an agent can access private information, encounter untrusted content, and send messages or perform other actions that affect the outside world. Apple’s WWDC26 session explains these risks; OpenAI’s prompt-injection guidance also discusses how malicious content can mislead agents.
How should you limit an agent’s access and task?
Give it only the access it needs
Connect only the apps, conversations, and accounts required for the task. If the agent does not need to send messages or access a sensitive account, do not grant that permission. OpenAI advises limiting an agent’s access to the data needed for a task. For ChatGPT agent, its Help Center guidance advises enabling only the apps needed, managing app permissions, and stopping a task if something seems suspicious. Controls differ by product, so check the current settings and documentation for your agent.

State a narrow task and clear boundaries
Prefer a request with a defined outcome and explicit limits over a broad instruction to review messages and take whatever action seems appropriate. For example:

- The action: Is the agent doing only what you asked?
- The recipient: Is the person, group, or account correct?
- The content: Does the exact message say what you intend, with no private information you did not mean to disclose?
- Links and attachments: Are you comfortable with what the agent will send or open?
- Other effects: Could the action change an account, share data, or make a purchase?
OpenAI recommends reviewing details before confirming actions such as sending an email or completing a purchase. Apple’s guidance describes how malicious context might redirect a message to an attacker-controlled recipient. A confirmation prompt is an opportunity to inspect the action, not a substitute for checking it. If anything looks unexpected, do not approve it; stop the task and review the agent’s access and instructions.
What should you know about privacy when an AI reads messages?
Privacy protections depend on the specific service and feature. Do not assume that a platform’s privacy statement for ordinary person-to-person chats applies unchanged when you deliberately send content to its AI feature.

WhatsApp and Meta AI
WhatsApp says personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted by default. It also says that when a person chooses to chat with Meta AI, Meta receives what they or others send to it; the feature is optional and user-initiated. WhatsApp’s privacy page says, “Meta AI is only ‘on’ when you choose to message it, and only you or a group participant can initiate this, not Meta or WhatsApp.” Its Messaging Guidelines, last updated September 23, 2026, state: “No one, not even WhatsApp, can see your personal messages which are end-to-end encrypted by default.” Those statements concern WhatsApp; they should not be generalized to other apps or treated as a description of every AI feature’s data handling. OpenAI says ChatGPT agent chats, browsing history, and associated screenshots remain in conversation history until deleted, and its documentation describes deletion and model-improvement controls. It says business, Enterprise, and Edu data is not used to train models by default; Plus and Pro data follows the stated privacy policy and user settings. How should you handle suspicious or urgent texts?
Do not trust a message merely because it is fluent, claims to come from an authority, or mentions advanced AI. The CFTC warns that scams arrive through SMS and messaging apps, including messages promising extraordinary investment returns or impersonating authorities. If a text urgently asks you to act, verify the claim using the organization’s official website or customer-service details that you locate independently. Do not use a link or phone number supplied in the suspicious message.
For unknown or unwanted senders, avoid responding. Use the messaging app’s available block and report features, and consider your device’s or carrier’s spam-filter controls. The CFTC also recommends reviewing app privacy settings. Its consumer guidance on AI-related scams covers suspicious messages and independent verification.
