You can use Playwright to collect specific content from a public web page, but the available evidence does not establish a universal 45-second run or an entirely zero-cost setup. This reproducible example uses Playwright’s JavaScript library—not its agent-oriented CLI or MCP interface—and shows how to launch a browser, wait for a specific heading, and save it as JSON. It assumes Node.js and the browser are already installed; the timed portion is the script run, not setup or downloads.
What this example does—and what “45 seconds” leaves out
Playwright is a browser automation framework for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Its library can power a fixed scraping script, while Playwright also lists CLI and MCP interfaces intended for coding agents and AI-driven automation. This example takes the library route: the extraction logic is explicit JavaScript, and no AI model is called at runtime. The script is an agent-compatible building block, not a demonstration of an AI agent independently deciding what to scrape. Playwright project

The “45s” in the title is not a verified benchmark. A short script run depends on the target page, computer, browser readiness, network, and task. The commands below are not a timed test, and installing packages or downloading browser binaries happens outside the run. Playwright’s reviewed documentation also does not establish a complete deployment cost: software licensing is only one part of the picture. Playwright installation and introduction
Check the target before scraping
This example uses a placeholder target URL because no particular website is established as an appropriate target. Before running it, check the specific site’s terms and access requirements, and choose a page you are permitted to access. Do not use browser automation to evade access controls or other site restrictions.

Install Playwright and its browser
Use a current Node.js installation. The commands below create a small JavaScript project, add Playwright, and install its Chromium browser. Browser downloads and any required system dependencies can take time and consume bandwidth. Playwright releases are tied to supported browser builds, so after updating Playwright, you may need to run the browser installation command again. Playwright installation documentation
-
Create a project and install the library:
npm init -y, thennpm install playwright. -
Install Chromium:
npx playwright install chromium. -
If installation reports missing operating-system dependencies, follow the instructions for your operating system in the official installation documentation.

Write a small, auditable scraper
Save the following as scrape.mjs. Replace the example URL with a permitted page and adjust the heading locator to identify the content you actually need. The script opens a fresh browser context, waits for a specific heading, writes the page URL and heading text to result.json, and closes the browser even if extraction fails.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
import { writeFile } from 'node:fs/promises';
const url = 'https://example.com/';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const context = await browser.newContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto(url);
const heading = page.getByRole('heading', { level: 1 });
await heading.waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
const result = {
source: page.url(),
title: await heading.innerText()
};
await writeFile('result.json', JSON.stringify(result, null, 2));
await context.close();
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Run it with node scrape.mjs. If the selected page has one visible level-one heading, result.json will resemble:
{
"source": "https://example.com/",
"title": "Example Domain"
}
The example extracts only two fields and records the source URL so the result can be traced back to the page. It does not define a universal schema; add fields only when the page and your permitted use call for them.

Choose locators that describe the page
Playwright’s documentation calls locators “the central piece of Playwright’s auto-waiting and retry-ability.” A role-and-level locator such as getByRole('heading', { level: 1 }) describes a user-facing element more clearly than a long CSS or XPath chain tied to the page’s internal structure. Playwright locators are reevaluated against the current page, and single-target operations are strict: if a locator matches more than one element, the script should not silently guess. Make it more specific or verify the intended match before disambiguating. Playwright locators documentation

Wait for the data, not just for navigation
Playwright automatically waits for actionability before interactions such as clicking. A click’s checks include whether the target is unique, visible, stable, enabled, and able to receive events. Those checks make interactions more reliable, but they do not prove that the desired scraping content has appeared. In the example, heading.waitFor({ state: 'visible' }) waits for the specific heading before its text is read. Playwright actionability documentation
For a page where the target content appears only after an interaction or asynchronous update, wait for the relevant locator or assert on the expected content after that event. Avoid using a fixed sleep as a substitute for checking the data itself. The Frame API guidance discourages treating network-idle as a universal “page finished” signal in testing. Keep each run isolated and close it cleanly
A browser context behaves like an isolated, incognito-style profile: contexts have separate cookies and storage, and a new context does not share cookies or cache with other contexts. That helps keep runs independent, but it does not make a scraper anonymous or grant permission to access a site. The example creates a context for the run and closes it before shutting down the browser. Playwright BrowserContext API documentation

Playwright’s software may be usable without a software license charge, but the reviewed documentation does not establish that every end-to-end setup is free. A local run still uses a computer, internet connection, storage, and time; browser installation also downloads binaries. If you add an AI model or hosted browser, those services may have separate costs. This particular script makes no model or hosted-browser call, so it demonstrates browser automation rather than pricing an AI-agent deployment.
Best Value
For a coding-agent workflow specifically, Playwright’s CLI installation page lists Node.js 20 or newer and requires a coding agent for the described setup. It is a different path from the library script above; do not mix its setup assumptions or claim it was used here. Playwright CLI installation documentation
Optional: run scraping in Docker
A local demonstration does not require Docker. If you deploy browser-based scraping or crawling in a container, Playwright’s Docker guidance recommends using a separate container user and a seccomp profile. Follow the official guidance for that deployment rather than treating those container protections as a requirement for every local run. Playwright Docker documentation
