You generally cannot send an OBS stream directly to an Amazon CloudFront distribution. OBS needs a compatible ingest endpoint with a server URL and stream key; CloudFront’s documented role is to deliver video to viewers after it has been encoded, packaged, and made available from an origin. For an AWS-based live workflow, send OBS output to a compatible ingest and encoding service, prepare it for playback with AWS Elemental MediaPackage or an appropriate origin such as MediaStore, and put CloudFront in front of that origin.
How OBS and CloudFront fit together
Think of the workflow as four separate jobs: OBS creates and sends the contribution stream; an ingest and encoding service receives it; a packaging service or origin makes playable outputs available; and CloudFront delivers those outputs to viewers. AWS’s guidance is explicit: “You must use an encoder to package video content before CloudFront can distribute the content.” AWS: Video on demand and live streaming video with CloudFront
- OBS Studio: software encoder and output client. It needs a destination’s actual server URL and stream key.
- Ingest and encoding: a compatible endpoint receives OBS’s output. AWS Elemental MediaLive is AWS’s real-time encoder in its documented live architecture.
- Packaging or origin: AWS Elemental MediaPackage can package content for multiple device types and support features such as DRM. MediaStore can serve as an origin when the encoded output is already in the formats viewers need.
- CloudFront: a content delivery network that routes viewer requests to the configured origin using suitable cache behaviors.
- Player: viewers use an HLS- or DASH-capable player to request and play the delivered stream.
AWS’s production-oriented reference solution combines MediaLive, MediaPackage, CloudFront, and a playback player; that is an architecture example, not a requirement that every streamer use every service. AWS Live Streaming on AWS solution overview
What to set up before opening OBS
First choose and configure a compatible ingest destination. The OBS documentation explains how to select a service or custom streaming server and enter its URL and stream key, but it does not provide an AWS-specific ingest URL or key. Those connection details must come from the ingest service you actually configure; a CloudFront distribution domain is not a substitute.

- Choose an AWS live architecture. For the documented managed approach, use an ingest/encoding stage such as MediaLive, followed by MediaPackage when you need packaging for different device formats or features such as DRM. Consider MediaStore as an origin when the encoder’s outputs already match the formats required by your viewers.
- Configure the ingest destination. Obtain the real server address and stream key from that service’s configuration. Do not guess either value or use the CloudFront viewer hostname.
- Decide the delivery formats. Match the packaging and origin to the playback protocols and formats you intend to serve, such as HLS or DASH. These choices determine the CloudFront behaviors needed later.
- Plan viewer playback. Make sure your intended viewer or player can request the chosen manifest and media segments through the CloudFront distribution.

Configure OBS to send the stream to ingest
- In OBS Studio, open Settings and select Stream.
- Choose the service that corresponds to your ingest provider, or select the custom streaming server option if the endpoint requires it.
- Enter the server URL and stream key supplied by the configured ingest destination. OBS’s general guide covers these fields; AWS’s cited guidance does not publish a universal OBS endpoint or key.
- Set output bitrate with both your available upload speed and the ingest service’s stated limits in mind. Do not apply a limit documented for another platform as if it were an AWS or universal limit.
- Begin with OBS defaults unless you have a specific reason to change them. If choosing 60 fps, account for the added system load compared with 30 fps.
- Start streaming and verify that the ingest/encoding stage receives the OBS output before troubleshooting CloudFront playback.

Put CloudFront in front of the live origin
For the MediaPackage live-channel workflow, AWS describes creating a CloudFront distribution with the MediaPackage endpoint as an HTTPS origin, setting the origin path as appropriate, and configuring cache behaviors for the endpoint’s manifests and segments. The exact behavior depends on the endpoint format and features, so use the guide for the format you have configured rather than applying one generic policy.

- AWS says to use a minimum TTL of five seconds or less for these live cache policies to help avoid stale content.
- For LL-HLS, forward the
_HLS_msnand_HLS_partquery parameters on manifest requests. - AWS recommends enabling header-based MediaPackage CDN authorization between MediaPackage and the CloudFront distribution.
These settings are specific to the live origin and endpoint formats in AWS’s guidance. Follow the matching documentation for your endpoint and required features: AWS Elemental MediaPackage: Setting up CloudFront.

Why CloudFront’s RTMP terminology does not make it an OBS ingest
AWS has a CloudFront StreamingDistribution API description for delivery of RTMP content from an origin. That legacy delivery capability does not establish CloudFront as the ingest endpoint in the documented HTTP live-video workflow. Choose the AWS origin path that fits the output
- Use MediaPackage when the workflow needs packaging for multiple device formats or features such as DRM, and configure the CloudFront behaviors for its endpoint’s manifests and segments.
- Consider MediaStore when the encoder output is already in the formats required by the viewing devices and can be served from that origin.
- Include the services your design needs, not every service in an example architecture. A larger reference solution shows a production-oriented combination; the right number of stages depends on packaging, playback formats, authorization, and operational needs.
These AWS services introduce operational complexity and service costs. The cited material does not establish a current cost total for a particular stream, so estimate using the specific services and configuration you plan to run rather than relying on a generic figure.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
