If an OBS source stops before the expected end of a gaming VOD, first find out where the cutoff happens: in the original file, OBS preview, the outgoing stream, or the processed YouTube VOD. Then check whether the scene uses Media Source or VLC Video. Their playback controls differ, and neither source has one verified setting that fixes every early cutoff.
First identify what “ends early” means
Several different symptoms can sound like a video ending early. Note what you actually see and hear before changing settings:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Video cutoff: the picture stops before the expected final content.
- Audio cutoff: sound ends while the picture continues. A forum report about audio cutting off is not evidence that the entire video has ended early.
- Frozen last frame or blank output: playback may have completed, but OBS is showing a final frame or nothing afterward.
- Failure to restart: the source completes but does not play again when expected.
- Output-only difference: the OBS preview appears correct, but the stream or VOD is missing the tail.
These symptoms point to different checks. In particular, the image shown after playback ends is not the same thing as the media file’s duration.

In the affected OBS scene, select the source and inspect its type and properties. Determine whether it is a local file in Media Source or a playlist or other input using VLC Video. Do not apply a VLC-only setting to a standard Media Source.

Media Source: one local file
Confirm that the selected file is the one you intend to play. The relevant controls do different jobs:
- Loop repeats a completed file. Enable it if the intended behavior is to start the file again after it finishes.
- Restart playback when source becomes active controls playback when the source becomes visible. It is not a substitute for Loop.
- Show nothing when playback ends controls what appears after playback completes. It does not lengthen the file or recover missing content.
These controls are documented for OBS media sources; none establishes why a file or stream has cut off prematurely. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.

VLC Video: playlist-capable source
VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support and can work with playlists. VLC must be installed, and the OBS and VLC architectures must match: OBS documentation states, “If you are using 64-bit OBS, you must install 64-bit VLC.” Check the playlist entries and Loop Playlist if your intent is to repeat a playlist. The OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation describes the source and its dependency.
As a diagnostic comparison, try the same local file in standard Media Source. If the symptom occurs only through VLC Video, that narrows the path to investigate; it does not prove a universal fix.

Locate the exact point of failure
Compare the same ending at each stage. Use the same file and note the expected and observed end times so that a difference between playback, delivery, and YouTube processing is not mistaken for a source setting problem.
- Play the exact original file outside OBS. Check its duration and final seconds in a standalone player. If the file itself is shorter than expected, scene settings cannot restore content that is not present in the file.
- Watch the OBS preview. Observe whether video and audio both reach the expected ending. Note whether the source goes blank, freezes, or simply stops.
- Make a short local OBS recording or controlled stream test. Compare its ending with the preview. This helps establish whether the difference appears in OBS output rather than only in a later YouTube VOD.
- Check the viewer-side stream, then the processed YouTube VOD when available. A finished VOD can differ from what appeared in preview; do not assume the preview alone proves that the final viewer output is intact.
An OBS issue report titled “VLC source cuts off the last part of output only (not in monitoring)” documents a report of differing output and monitoring. It is a reason to compare those observation points, not proof that your case has the same cause or solution: OBS Studio issue #11984.

What reported workarounds do—and do not—show
Forum posts can suggest a comparison to try, but they are individual reports rather than controlled tests or official fixes:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- One OBS forum thread describes local audio files skipping near the beginning and ending short in OBS; a later participant said standard Media Source worked for them instead of VLC Video. That report does not establish that switching sources will fix a different video-cutoff case: OBS forum discussion.
- A separate thread concerns VLC Video muting audio in the last one or two seconds of clips. A participant said saving to MKV and remuxing to MP4 solved their case. This is an audio-at-the-tail anecdote, not a proven fix for video ending early: OBS forum discussion.
Do not treat either report as a general recommendation to change source type or file format. First establish whether your symptom is audio-only, whether it occurs in the original file, and where the cutoff first appears.

If it is still unresolved, capture a reproducible report
For a useful troubleshooting report, record the details that distinguish source playback from output or VOD processing:
- OBS version and operating system.
- Source type, and whether the input is a single local file or a playlist.
- Media format and expected versus observed end time.
- Whether audio, video, or both stop; note if the final frame freezes or the source goes blank.
- For VLC Video, VLC version and whether its architecture matches OBS.
- Whether the cutoff occurs in the standalone player, OBS preview, local recording or stream output, or only the processed YouTube VOD.
- An OBS log from a reproduction.
Without those details, the available reports do not support naming one root cause or a precise universal fix.
Or let it run in the cloud
