The practical starting point is a specific customer problem, reliable first-party and product data, and a controlled test—not a promise that personalization will automatically raise sales.
Where AI can make an online shopping journey more relevant
Personalization works best when it helps a customer make a decision or find something useful. It can shape several parts of the journey, not just a “recommended for you” carousel.

Product recommendations
Recommendation systems can use interactions and purchase patterns to suggest products a shopper may want to explore. Suggestions can be complementary—such as shoes or accessories that go with an outfit—or based on product attributes. In a beauty example, a scent profile can help surface similar-smelling products in other categories.
Conversational shopping and guided discovery
A conversational assistant can translate a request such as “help me find an outfit for a wedding” into a more guided search, then suggest coordinated products. Omoda describes an AI stylist that interprets occasions and style preferences, proposes clothing, shoes, and accessories, and uses purchase history, trend analysis, and brand affinity to inform recommendations and alternatives. The company says the service was in its first phase, focused on conversational outfit search. Its case study reports a conversion rate among stylist users 2.5 times the average; that is an initial, vendor-published result for users of the tool, not evidence that the tool alone caused the difference or a forecast for other retailers. Best Buy describes a generative AI Gift Finder that uses customer preferences to guide gift selection. Its case study also covers summarizing thousands of product reviews and generating answers to questions using product manuals and vendor-provided information. These uses pair discovery with decision support; they do not remove the need to make product information accurate and understandable. Google Cloud’s Best Buy case study.
Homepage, product pages, and targeted content
A homepage can adapt layouts, copy, and campaigns to a shopper’s current intent rather than relying only on static audience segments. Product pages can use recommendations to suggest relevant alternatives or complementary items. The same principle can guide which content or offers a shopper sees, provided the targeting is useful and the retailer can explain and measure its effect.

In a 2025 case study, Mastercard describes Saks testing homepage personalization using real-time purchase intent and prior interactions. Saks began with 5% of traffic, tested intent groupings and associated layouts, copy, and campaigns, then expanded the experience across homepage traffic on desktop, mobile, and app. Saks also used Dynamic Yield for a portion of product-page recommendations. The reported test results were a 9.5% conversion-rate improvement, 7% higher revenue per visitor, and an 18.4% decrease in bounce rate. These are outcomes reported for that implementation, not general predictions or proof that personalization alone produced every change. Mastercard’s 2025 Saks case study.

What data AI personalization uses
A personalization system needs information about both the shopper’s interactions and the products available. The appropriate inputs depend on the use case; collecting more data is not automatically better.

- First-party customer signals: direct interactions, account or loyalty information, and browsing or purchase events, where collected appropriately and with relevant customer choices respected. Shopify’s guide discusses these as personalization inputs. Shopify’s personalized shopping guide.
- Purchase and browsing history: useful for understanding prior interests, but it may not reflect a shopper’s current need. Omoda and MonAmie describe using purchase history in their respective implementations.
- Structured catalog data: attributes such as category, style, scent profile, size, or other relevant product characteristics help systems identify meaningful similarities. Saks’ case study emphasizes product and content metadata as part of the work.
- Context and intent: current interactions can help tailor a page to what a customer appears to be shopping for now. Saks’ homepage test used real-time purchase intent alongside previous interactions.
Before selecting a tool, check whether these inputs are accurate, consistently organized, and available to the systems that need them. Poor product attributes can undermine recommendations even when customer data is plentiful.
How to test personalization before expanding it
- Choose one customer problem. For example, help shoppers find a relevant product, assemble a complete outfit, choose a gift, or see a homepage aligned with their current shopping intent.
- Set success measures in advance. Pick a small set tied to the problem, such as conversion, revenue per visitor, average order value, recommendation engagement, or customer engagement.
- Define the test and comparison. Use an appropriate control, document the audience and test period, and avoid treating people who choose to use a feature as equivalent to a randomly assigned comparison group. This helps separate observed association from evidence of impact.
- Start with limited exposure. Saks’ reported rollout began with 5% of traffic, allowing the team to test intent groupings and page variations before expanding.
- Review results and operational risks. Check the chosen measures alongside recommendation relevance, data quality, latency, customer feedback, and whether the system behaves as intended.
- Expand only when the evidence supports it. Record what changed and for whom; results from one audience, season, or placement may not transfer to another.
Case studies from platform providers and vendors can show how a retailer implemented a system, but they are not independent cross-retailer benchmarks. For example, AWS reports that MonAmie saw a 14% increase in ecommerce revenue, a 14% increase in average order value, and a 200% increase in users engaging with its recommendation section after using Amazon Personalize. AWS describes MonAmie using customer profiles and purchase history, with User-Personalization-v2 for items a user may interact with and Item-Attribute-Affinity for attribute-based segments. Its perfume example connects a scent profile with similar-smelling products in other categories. These figures are MonAmie’s reported case-study outcomes, not expected results for another business. How to choose an approach or platform
Match the approach to your existing commerce operation rather than choosing on feature count alone. A managed recommendation service may help when machine-learning expertise is limited; AWS describes MonAmie working with implementation support from AWS Partner Softprom. A retailer with strong internal technical capacity may have different integration and operating needs.
Recommended Free Tools
- Data and customer controls: identify which inputs the system uses, how customer choices are honored, and how data flows between systems.
- Catalog readiness: assess whether product and content attributes are complete and consistent enough to support useful matching.
- Relevance and explainability: determine whether teams can understand why products or content are being surfaced and correct poor matches.
- Commerce-stack integration: check fit with the current storefront, catalog, analytics, and campaign tools.
- Performance and scale: establish latency and traffic requirements for the pages and channels involved.
- Measurement capability: ensure the system supports controlled tests and gives teams access to the outcomes they intend to track.
- Implementation and operating expertise: account for the people needed to configure, monitor, and improve the system, including partner support if needed.
Privacy, bias, and other limitations to plan for
Personalization can create privacy concerns if shoppers do not understand what information is being used or why a page looks different. Collect only data appropriate to the use case, explain its use clearly, and respect applicable customer choices. Shopify’s guidance is commercial advice, not a complete privacy compliance standard; obligations vary by jurisdiction, so consult qualified privacy counsel for legal requirements.

A 2024 arXiv preprint identifies privacy, algorithmic bias, scalability, and cold-start as challenges for ecommerce recommendation systems. Cold-start refers to limited information about a new shopper or a new product, making relevant recommendations harder. These are system-design risks to assess, not proof that any particular deployed tool has a specific fault or a substitute for legal guidance. The 2024 arXiv preprint abstract.
Finally, do not assume an observed lift means the algorithm was the only cause. Promotions, seasonality, traffic mix, and other changes can affect results. A controlled, documented test makes conclusions more useful than a vendor’s headline statistic alone.
