You can use an AI model on your Mac from an Android phone without internet after setup: the Mac runs the model, and the phone connects to it over your local Wi-Fi. Download the software and model first, then verify the local connection before disconnecting internet. The devices still need a working local network; “offline” here means no internet access, not no connection between the phone and Mac.
How the Mac-to-Android setup works
The Mac is the inference host: Ollama runs the model and answers prompts. Android is a client that sends prompts to the Mac and displays its responses. Ollama documents macOS support, model management, and a local API in its Quickstart. This arrangement does not run the model on the phone.

You can reach Ollama through a mobile browser interface such as Open WebUI, or use an Android app configured to connect to Ollama on your local network. The cited Android setup directions come from an independent publisher of an unofficial client, not an official Ollama app endorsement. The cloud option described by that guide requires internet and therefore does not meet this article’s offline goal.

Download the model you intend to use while internet is available. Follow Ollama’s documented model pull and run commands; the model must be present on the Mac before you disconnect.

Start Ollama and test a prompt on the Mac first. Confirm the selected model responds locally before troubleshooting phone access. This separates model download or runtime problems from network problems.
Connect Android to Ollama over local Wi-Fi

Connect both the Mac and phone to the same local Wi-Fi network. A guest Wi-Fi network or work VLAN may isolate devices and prevent them from reaching each other.

Find the Mac’s local-network IP address. On Android, use that address rather than
localhostor127.0.0.1: those names refer to the phone itself when entered on the phone. -
Configure Ollama to accept connections on the network, following the instructions for your Ollama installation or chosen client. The independent Android guide gives
OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0as its example and says to restart after changing the setting. Binding to all interfaces can expose the service to other reachable devices, so limit access with your network and firewall configuration. -
From Chrome on Android, open
http://<Mac-LAN-IP>:11434, replacing the example text with the Mac’s actual local IP. The guide says a reachable Ollama server responds with “Ollama is running.” If it does, enter the same Mac address and port in your chosen Android client.Rank #3

These Android connection steps follow the independent publisher’s guide, “How to Use Ollama on Android: Local Network or Ollama Cloud”. The guide is useful for its app-specific directions, but its instructions and app support should not be treated as official Ollama documentation.

Use Open WebUI from the phone
Open WebUI provides a browser interface that supports Ollama. Install and configure it using the project’s official documentation, then open the web interface from Android and make sure it can reach the Mac’s Ollama service.
If Open WebUI runs in Docker, do not assume that localhost means the Mac. Inside a container, localhost refers to the container itself. Configure the Ollama connection with an address and Docker network path that let the container reach the Mac host; the project’s FAQ discusses Docker-to-host connectivity.

Prepare for use without internet
Before taking the Mac offline, restart and test the complete workflow: open the interface on Android, send a prompt, and confirm a response from the Mac. A local chat can work without internet once the necessary software and model files are already present and the local service is reachable.
Open WebUI’s offline guidance recommends preparing the application image and packages, local inference model, and persistent caches in advance. Stage additional assets for any optional features you plan to use:

- Document retrieval: local embedding models and document-extraction dependencies.
- Reranking: the relevant reranking model and dependencies.
- Speech features: their corresponding models and dependencies.
A feature may fail on its first offline use if a required model, cache, or dependency was not downloaded beforehand. Check application logs for missing assets or attempted downloads.

What “no internet required” does—and does not—mean
The phone and Mac still need a local route between them, usually the same Wi-Fi network. If the Mac has no Wi-Fi or other local connection, this setup cannot deliver its responses to the phone. Internet is unnecessary for local chat only after the required software and model assets have been prepared.
An application’s offline mode is not the same as blocking all outbound network traffic. Open WebUI’s offline settings do not themselves prevent external connections: configured cloud model APIs, OAuth, hosted search, or other tools may still make requests if the network permits them. For enforced isolation, Open WebUI recommends separate controls such as firewall rules, container networking, or physical network isolation. Preserve the local connections required between Android, the interface, and Ollama.

Troubleshoot a phone that cannot reach the Mac
- Check the network: verify both devices are on the same Wi-Fi, and that the phone is not relying on cellular while the Mac is on a separate network. Guest Wi-Fi or a work VLAN may block device-to-device traffic.
- Check the address: use the Mac’s LAN IP and port
11434, not phone-sidelocalhostor127.0.0.1. - Check Ollama’s network binding: if the service accepts only local connections, configure network listening as described by the relevant client or runtime instructions, restart Ollama, and test again. Restrict access deliberately when changing the binding.

- Check offline assets: if the interface opens but a feature fails, confirm that its models, caches, and dependencies were staged. Review logs for attempted downloads or missing files.
