To reduce the risk that an AI agent can read or act on personal files, give it only the files and permissions its task requires, review macOS privacy approvals before and after use, and check the agent’s own data practices. macOS controls access to protected locations, but they do not establish what a particular agent sends to a service or how long that service keeps it.
Review an agent’s macOS permissions
On macOS 13 or later, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Privacy. On macOS 12 or earlier, use System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. Labels and screens can vary by macOS version, so use the privacy pane shown on your Mac.

- Find the agent in the relevant privacy categories, especially Files and Folders, Full Disk Access, Accessibility, and Automation.
- Check which locations or capabilities are enabled. Turn off access that is not needed for the task. If the agent needs to work with a document, prefer granting access to that specific item or folder rather than a broader category when macOS offers that choice.
- After the task, revisit the privacy pane and remove approvals the agent no longer needs.
Apple says macOS 10.15 and later requires user consent before apps access protected locations such as Desktop, Documents, Downloads, iCloud Drive, and network volumes. Apple’s file-and-folder privacy controls also cover removable volumes. See Apple’s explanation of controlling app access to files.
Give broader permissions a specific reason
Access to an individual file is different from a permission that enables wider capabilities. Full Disk Access is broader than permission to work with a selected document. Accessibility can let an app interact with the interface, while Automation governs control of other apps. Do not approve these simply because an agent requests them; decide whether the particular task genuinely needs them, and deny or revoke them if it does not.

These are macOS permission categories, not a universal recipe for any AI agent. Apple’s documentation does not establish which permissions a named agent needs or whether denying one will leave that app’s other features working.
Separate Mac security checks from file-access decisions
Gatekeeper checks downloaded software, including developer identity, notarization, and whether software has been altered. Apple also describes protections such as XProtect and app sandboxing as parts of macOS’s layered security. These safeguards help address software trust and malware risks; they do not replace checking what an installed agent is allowed to access. Apple notes that protections reduce risk but do not eliminate it. Read the App security overview and Gatekeeper and runtime protection.

System Integrity Protection (SIP) restricts changes to critical operating-system files and directories. It is useful platform protection, but it is not a substitute for limiting an app’s access to your user files. Apple describes SIP in its System Integrity Protection documentation.

FileVault encrypts the Mac’s storage volume, helping protect data when the volume is locked. It does not replace permission controls for an agent already running in your user session: encryption at rest and app access are different protections.

Disk Utility can create encrypted disk images for storing or transferring sensitive files, using 128-bit or 256-bit AES according to Apple’s documentation. An encrypted image protects its contents while it is locked; once mounted, Apple says it behaves as a local volume. The documentation does not establish that a mounted image blocks an otherwise authorized agent from reading it. See Apple’s instructions for creating a disk image.

macOS privacy settings address local permissions. They do not tell you whether an agent uploads files, what data it processes remotely, how long it retains information, or whether it uses data for other purposes. Before granting access, consult the agent provider’s current privacy documentation and settings for file transfer, processing, retention, and deletion. If those practices are unclear, avoid giving the agent access to sensitive files.

- Use a non-sensitive sample file to see what the agent can do without exposing private material.
- Keep sensitive documents outside the locations or folders you make available to the agent, where practical.
- Review access again when changing tasks, installing an update, or switching to a different agent; do not assume one app’s behavior or needs apply to another.
