To send a video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, copy the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then give FFmpeg a real-time input and an FLV output destination. For an encrypted connection, use the RTMPS URL YouTube provides. A command can publish a file, but continuous, seamless looping and recovery are separate problems that require testing and monitoring.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel prepared for live streaming, and a stream selected or created in Live Control Room.
- The stream URL and stream key shown in the stream settings. YouTube describes the key as the password and address that tells an encoder where to send its feed and lets YouTube accept it.
- A local video file and an FFmpeg build that includes the required input demuxer, video and audio encoders, FLV muxer, and RTMPS support if you intend to use RTMPS.
- An upload connection that can sustain the bitrate you select, plus time to make a short test before relying on the stream.
In a terminal, ffmpeg -version shows build information and ffmpeg -encoders lists available encoders. Packaged FFmpeg builds differ, so do not assume a particular codec is available until you check your build.

Copy the stream URL and protect the key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the one you intend to use.
- Open the stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key exactly as shown. Use the RTMPS URL when available; do not construct or guess the host, path, or key arrangement.
- Keep the key in a private local configuration or script. Do not publish it in a post, repository, screenshot, or support message. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the value used by FFmpeg. YouTube allows a custom stream key to be reused, but a reset key must replace the old one in your encoder.
YouTube’s RTMPS guidance describes the protocol as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection, which provides encryption. If a TLS error occurs, check that you copied an RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and follow YouTube’s port guidance rather than changing the address by guesswork.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSend a local video file to YouTube with FFmpeg
Basic command
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmps://HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY'
Replace input.mp4 with your file and replace the example destination with the exact RTMPS URL and key arrangement supplied by Live Control Room. The displayed URL is illustrative, not a YouTube endpoint. Do not paste a real key into a public example or shared command history.

Choose codecs and stream settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance accessed in 2026 lists RTMP/RTMPS video using H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends two-second keyframes and sets a four-second maximum. Check the current YouTube guidance and your FFmpeg build before selecting a different codec or encoder.

Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no one value that fits every stream. In YouTube’s current guidance, H.264 examples include 720p at 30 fps with a 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended, 1080p at 30 fps with 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and 1080p at 60 fps with 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that your particular connection can sustain them. Consult its current bitrate table for the exact combination you plan to send, choose a quality your upload can maintain, and test representative motion and audio while watching stream health.
For low-latency streaming, YouTube cautions that lowering latency can increase playback buffering. For a prerecorded ambience or radio-style feed with little audience interaction, prioritizing stable playback over the lowest delay is a reasonable trade-off, not a platform guarantee.

Loop a video—and understand what “continuous” requires
The basic command publishes one input; it does not itself establish an infinite loop. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option can be used to request indefinite looping for a file, for example:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmps://HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY'
Loop behavior depends on the FFmpeg version and the media. Test the actual file and build for a clean boundary, valid timestamps, audio/video synchronization, and uninterrupted encoder output. A command that repeats one file also does not create a scheduled playlist with carefully controlled transitions.

“Continuous” involves more than a running FFmpeg process. The source must keep producing packets, the network must publish them successfully, and YouTube must continue receiving a valid, playable stream. The FFmpeg documentation includes a FIFO-based RTMP recovery example for temporary network failures, but recovery does not ensure that viewers see no interruption or that a YouTube event remains valid indefinitely. A process supervisor and monitoring may help with an unattended deployment; their setup depends on the operating system and hosting arrangement.

- Start FFmpeg with a short test using the intended file, codec, frame rate, resolution, bitrate, and destination.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Review stream health and any reported errors before making the event public or depending on it.
- Check actual playback from a viewer endpoint as well as FFmpeg’s output. A process that has not exited does not prove that YouTube is receiving valid audio and video.
- For a longer run, monitor the source, publishing connection, and YouTube playback. Decide how you will respond if the process exits or the ingest drops; a recovery mechanism is not a promise of invisible failover.
- End the stream deliberately when finished. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for longer sessions.
Common problems and fixes
- FFmpeg reports an unavailable encoder: Your build may not include
libx264or another requested encoder. Checkffmpeg -encodersand use an encoder actually available in that build. - YouTube does not receive the feed: Recheck the selected stream, copied URL, key, and any errors in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed or changed, reset it there and update FFmpeg.
- RTMPS produces a TLS or connection error: Confirm you used the RTMPS URL shown by YouTube rather than an assumed address, and consult YouTube’s port guidance.
- Stream health reports bitrate or connection trouble: Compare the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate with YouTube’s current bitrate guidance, then test at a rate the upload connection can sustain.
- The loop stutters, drifts, or has a gap: Check the specific file and FFmpeg build at the loop boundary, including timestamps and audio/video synchronization. The command syntax alone cannot guarantee seamless looping.
- FFmpeg is still running but playback is broken: Check YouTube’s preview and viewer playback, not just whether the process remains alive; the process can survive while valid publishing has stopped.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream without maintaining an FFmpeg process on a local machine, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not go live from a camera.

Copyright and channel considerations
Using your own stream key and keeping a feed technically live does not establish that you have rights to everything in the video or audio. Before streaming, confirm that you have permission to use the material and check YouTube’s current live-stream and channel policies. Technical continuity is separate from whether content is permitted or eligible for monetization.
