To run a continuous lofi broadcast, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into an encoder, then start sending the audio and video feed. The key is an access credential, not a way to keep a broadcast running on its own: your encoder or cloud service must stay connected, and a scheduled broadcast may also require you to click Go live after YouTube shows its preview.
What a YouTube stream key does
A stream key lets an encoder send its audio and video to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep yours private; anyone with access may be able to send a feed to your channel. You can use a custom reusable key when you want to retain the same ingest credentials across stream setups. If a key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in your encoder. The stream key does not create or sustain a broadcast by itself. YouTube distinguishes the incoming feed, called a stream, from the viewer-facing broadcast. Its API documentation describes keeping a 24/7 broadcast live while binding another broadcast to the same stream for a limited segment; that is an API example, not a requirement for ordinary manual setup. Prepare your channel before the lofi launch
- Enable live streaming and confirm the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days.
- Allow for activation time if this is your first live stream: YouTube says initial activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Decide whether the broadcast should be public, private or unlisted, and prepare its title, description and other metadata.
- Use music, artwork and animation that you own or have permission to stream. The technical setup does not grant rights to a track or visual, and the applicable copyright status depends on the content and permissions. Check YouTube’s current copyright guidance before broadcasting.

How to use a YouTube stream key in an encoder
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Stream tab. Create a stream or select one whose settings you want to reuse. If YouTube loads previous settings, check that the selected key and metadata are the ones you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and key. In the stream settings, copy the Stream URL and Stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not put it in a public post, recording, screenshot or shared document.
- Enter them in your encoder. If the encoder has a YouTube destination, select it and follow its connection prompts. Otherwise, paste the Stream URL into its server or RTMP server field and the Stream key into its stream-key field. In OBS or another encoder, the exact field names can vary by version, but the server field takes the URL and the key field takes the key.
- Start the outgoing feed. Start streaming in the encoder. Return to Live Control Room and wait for YouTube to receive the feed and display a preview. For a scheduled stream, click Go live in Live Control Room if prompted; starting the encoder alone may not make the scheduled broadcast viewer-facing.
- Verify the result. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status, and confirm that both video and audio are reaching YouTube. Check the broadcast from a viewer’s perspective as well, especially its privacy setting and playback.

Encoder settings for a stable lofi feed
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the codec, resolution and frame rate you choose; recommended bitrates vary with those choices. For RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data in transit to its servers. - Use automatic resolution and frame-rate detection unless you have a specific reason to set manual values with a custom key.
- Keep the encoder output within the recommended settings for the resolution and frame rate you are actually sending; a higher setting is not automatically more reliable.
- Test the complete feed before the planned start: playback, audio levels, visual loop, encoder output and stream-health messages.
For a pre-recorded lofi mix, confirm the file loops as intended in the encoder or service. A still or animated visual should also loop cleanly; YouTube’s ingest settings cannot repair a file or playlist that ends unexpectedly.

The device or service sending the feed must remain active. With a software encoder, that means keeping the computer, encoder process, power and internet connection running. A standalone hardware encoder can reduce reliance on a general-purpose computer, but it still needs a stable power and network connection. A cloud service for continuous prerecorded video can keep the sending process off your home computer; check its current YouTube compatibility, supported formats and recovery behavior rather than assuming all services work the same way.

YouTube’s encoder directory includes software, hardware and cloud-service options, and its guidance says expensive equipment is not required to start. Choose according to how much direct control you need and who will be responsible for monitoring the feed and responding to an interruption. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings.
Manual setup and monitoring
Before leaving a computer-based broadcast unattended, disable sleep that would stop the encoder, keep the machine on reliable power, and check that the network can sustain the outgoing feed. Monitor stream health during operation. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output and preview; if multiple viewers on separate connections report trouble, investigate the encoder first. If the encoder appears healthy, examine outbound network performance. Updating encoder software and checking CPU load and local recordings can also help isolate a fault. Troubleshooting: when the stream key or broadcast fails
The encoder will not connect
- Check the URL and key separately. Confirm the Stream URL is in the server field and the current Stream key is in the key field; a pasted space or old key can prevent connection.
- Refresh a problematic key. YouTube advises obtaining a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder when a third-party encoder has a startup issue. If the old key was exposed, reset it and update every encoder using it.
- Confirm the channel and encoder are ready. Check live-stream eligibility, activation status, encoder software updates, CPU load and outbound internet performance.
YouTube receives the feed, but the broadcast is not visible
Wait for the preview, read any stream-health message, and check whether Live Control Room is asking you to click Go live for the scheduled broadcast. Then verify the broadcast’s privacy setting. An incoming encoder feed and a public viewer-facing broadcast are related but distinct steps.
Viewers report buffering, missing audio or poor playback
Check the preview and encoder output, confirm audio is present, and compare the outgoing settings with YouTube’s recommendations for the chosen resolution and frame rate. Check CPU load and outbound network performance. If people on separate connections see the same problem while the encoder output looks healthy, investigate the encoder and feed rather than assuming a single viewer’s connection explains it.
Ending the stream and keeping an archive
For a scheduled broadcast, use End Stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not promise automatic archiving for a longer continuous stream, so make a separate recording or confirm YouTube’s current behavior if an archive matters.
