1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf a Node.js Playwright screenshot shows the wrong font, first check whether the browser can access the intended font in the environment taking the screenshot. Then check whether the page is captured before its web font has loaded. Finally, make the test and its visual baseline use the same browser and operating-system environment. Adjusting screenshot-diff thresholds will not install a missing font or make different renderers equivalent.
Why Playwright screenshots show an unexpected font
Playwright does not select a different CSS font on its own. The browser applies the page’s font styles and uses the fonts available to it. If the requested font is unavailable, the CSS fallback chain can produce different text from what you see on another machine.
Even when the font is available, screenshots can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright specifically identifies fonts as one source of rendering differences across browsers and platforms. A local-versus-CI mismatch is therefore a reason to compare environments as well as application code.
Playwright’s visual comparison guidance recommends generating and comparing screenshots in the same environment where practical.

Start by reproducing the failure in its real environment
Before changing CSS or tolerances, record the details that determine what the browser can render:
- Installed Playwright package version and the browser project used by the test.
- Operating system, container image and image tag, if applicable.
- Whether the browser runs headless or headed.
- Whether the mismatch occurs locally, in CI, or in both places.
- The page’s declared
font-familyand the intended font’s source: system-installed or loaded by the page.
Re-run the same test in the failing runner. If it differs only in CI or Docker, compare the runner’s fonts, browser dependencies, browser version and capture timing with the working environment. Do not assume a CSS change is responsible merely because the screenshot changed.
Check the CSS font and the fonts available to the browser
Verify the declared family and fallback chain
Inspect the relevant CSS rule and confirm that the intended family is spelled and ordered as expected. A declaration such as font-family: "Example Sans", sans-serif can render with a fallback if “Example Sans” is not available or has not loaded. Check the actual runtime, not just your development machine: a font installed locally may not exist in a Linux runner or container.

Establish whether the font is local or web-served
If the page uses a web font, inspect the browser’s network and font-loading diagnostics to see whether the file was requested and loaded successfully. If it is a system font, verify that the execution image includes the intended family and that the browser can use it. The correct font package depends on the font and base distribution; there is no single package that supplies every application’s fonts.
For a custom or proprietary font, ensure that your deployment and test setup are permitted by its licence. Do not copy a font into a container or redistribute it without checking those terms.

npx playwright install --with-deps chromium
Use the matching browser argument if your project runs Firefox or WebKit. This command installs Playwright browser dependencies; it does not guarantee that every font used by your application is present. If the intended font is not included, add it using the appropriate method for your base distribution and font licence, then verify it in the same image that runs the test.
Keep the Docker image aligned with the Playwright package
The Playwright Docker image includes browser binaries and system dependencies, but your project installs the Playwright package separately. Pin the image to a version that matches the project’s Playwright version; a mismatch can prevent Playwright from locating browser executables. Check the current Playwright Docker documentation and your project’s actual version before selecting an image tag. The cited Docker page is the Next documentation, so do not treat an example tag from it as a stable version recommendation.

Make the screenshot baseline and test environment agree
For visual regression tests, generate and compare baselines in the same operating-system and browser environment whenever practical. If you intentionally test more than one browser or platform, keep separate baselines for those rendering environments instead of expecting identical font rasterization everywhere.

- CURVED FOR ENHANCED ENGAGEMENT: An immersive viewing experience with a curved monitor that wraps more closely around your field of vision; It creates a wider view, enhancing depth perception and minimizing peripheral distraction
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE FOR SEAMLESS CONTENT: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects; The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
There is a practical trade-off: a pinned container can make the rendering environment more reproducible, while a host-managed runner may better reflect the machine where the application is used. Choose the setup that matches what the test is meant to establish, and keep the baseline tied to that setup.
Make capture timing deterministic
A screenshot taken while the page is still changing can capture a fallback font before a web font finishes loading. Wait for the application state and relevant content to be ready before capturing, and use browser network or font diagnostics to confirm whether the font request succeeded.
Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the final image. That can reduce captures during transient visual changes, but it does not establish that a remote font loaded successfully or fix a missing font. Consult current browser documentation and verify any web-font readiness check in your application rather than assuming screenshot stabilization proves font readiness.

Once the intended font is available, the page is ready, and the baseline environment is aligned, investigate legitimate rendering changes and screenshot assertion options. Playwright supports comparison options and styling that can suppress volatile elements, but increasing pixel tolerances to mask a font mismatch can conceal the underlying problem.
Troubleshooting common wrong-font symptoms
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot uses a fallback only in Linux or Docker. | The intended system font is absent from the execution image, or the browser cannot use it. | Inspect the actual image and install the required font using the base distribution’s appropriate method. Browser dependency installation alone may not provide it. |
| Local screenshots look right, but CI differs. | The runner’s OS, browser version, settings, hardware, headless mode or installed fonts differ. | Record and compare those environment details, then align the runner with the baseline or maintain a separate baseline for that environment. |
| The first capture is wrong, but a later one is right. | The web font or application content may not be ready at the first capture. | Inspect font and network diagnostics; wait for the application’s relevant ready state. Do not rely on screenshot stability alone to prove a font loaded. |
| Playwright cannot launch the browser in a container. | Browser dependencies may be missing, or the Docker image and Playwright package versions may not match. | Install the required browser dependencies and align the pinned image version with the package version. |
| Increasing the screenshot threshold makes the test pass, but text still looks wrong. | The comparison is tolerating the mismatch rather than resolving it. | Restore an appropriate comparison threshold and verify font availability, readiness and environment consistency first. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright choose the wrong font for my page?
No. The browser applies the page’s font styles using fonts available to it; a missing font can lead to a fallback.
Does a stable screenshot assertion prove that a web font loaded?
No. Matching consecutive screenshots can reduce transient visual changes, but it does not confirm that a font request succeeded.
