How to Show a Now-Playing Track Title on a 24/7 YouTube Lofi Stream

To show the current song on a 24/7 YouTube lofi stream, add a now-playing overlay to the scene that is broadcasting the music. The overlay needs a source of track metadata—such as a supported player, YouTube chapters, or a media library. YouTube’s encoder setup alone does not identify which track is playing.

For a stream you run yourself, the practical options are a browser overlay, a YouTube Music desktop-app bridge to OBS sources, or a local music-overlay app. Choose according to where the audio actually plays, then test track changes, pauses, and long titles before leaving the stream unattended.

What a now-playing overlay needs

A track label has two parts: metadata that identifies the current track, and a visible element in the video scene. OBS can show text or a browser overlay, but it cannot infer a playlist’s current song just because that playlist is being broadcast. The metadata must come from the player or from a playlist/chapter source the overlay supports.

YouTube describes an encoder as converting video into a digital format for streaming. Its encoder setup guide covers connecting the encoder to YouTube Live Control Room with a server URL and stream key; it does not describe a built-in feature that automatically exposes a source playlist’s current track to OBS. See YouTube’s encoder guide.

Choose an approach for your playback source

Approach Playback and metadata source OBS display Best fit and caveat
Music on stream browser overlay The OBS Forum listing says it supports YouTube and YouTube Music and can use YouTube chapters or video-description playlists as title inputs. Browser source Try when your actual player and playlist or chapters match its supported inputs. Feature details come from its listing, not independent compatibility testing.
YouTube Music desktop-app bridge A community project uses metadata from the Tuna OBS plugin included with the th-ch YouTube Music desktop app. Native OBS text and image sources For technically comfortable users who play through that desktop app. It requires a local receiver process and has a documented stale-title limitation.
Streamling local overlay app The project says it detects supported players, including YouTube and YouTube Music in browsers, and displays title and artist. Local web overlay/browser source An alternative to a custom bridge; verify the current download and exact player/browser combination before relying on it unattended.
Playout platform Now Playing element A managed media library supplies file metadata when a new item starts. Element in the platform’s composition editor Potentially suitable for cloud playout from a managed library, not a direct overlay for a browser playing a YouTube playlist into OBS. Confirm current workflow and pricing with the vendor.

Route A: Add a browser overlay for YouTube or YouTube Music

The OBS Project Forum listing for Music on stream describes a Chrome extension with a browser overlay. It says the extension can take titles from YouTube chapters or video-description playlists, has a theme editor and CSS customization, can hide when music is paused, and scrolls long titles. Its listing reports creation on April 12, 2024, and last update on September 18, 2025; those dates and features are listing claims, not a guarantee that every current playlist format or browser setup works.

  1. Check the extension’s current installation instructions and confirm that your playback source and title input—chapters or a description playlist—match what it supports.
  2. Install and configure the extension according to its own guide, then add the overlay URL it provides as a browser source in your OBS scene.
  3. Preview the scene while a track plays. Change tracks, pause playback, and check whether the overlay updates or hides as expected.
  4. Test a long title and artist name against your actual lofi background. Adjust the theme or CSS if needed so text remains readable and does not cover important visuals.

Do not assume that an arbitrary YouTube playlist automatically supplies track metadata to the overlay. Verify the input method with your own playlist before using it for a continuous broadcast.

Route B: Send YouTube Music desktop-app metadata to OBS

The community project obs-now-playing-youtube-music documents a local bridge for the th-ch YouTube Music desktop app. The app’s Tuna OBS plugin sends track information to a Python receiver, which writes a title text file and cover image file. OBS can then read those files through native text and image sources. This is a community example, not a feature supported by Google or OBS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the th-ch YouTube Music desktop app and enable its included Tuna OBS plugin, following the project’s README.
  2. Use Python 3.8 or later to run the receiver as documented by the project. Pillow is optional according to its README. The receiver can be run manually or configured as a user service.
  3. In OBS, add a text source and configure it to read the receiver’s title file. Add an image source that points to the cover image file.
  4. Start YouTube Music playback and confirm that the title text updates and the cover image reloads when the track changes.
  5. Test what happens when playback stops and when the app is fully closed. The README notes that the last track can remain visible after the app closes because there is no staleness timeout. If that matters for your layout, add an appropriate clear or timeout mechanism and verify it works.

This route depends on the desktop app and local receiver continuing to run on the machine feeding OBS. It is not the same as reading metadata from YouTube’s outgoing livestream.

Route C: Use a local player-detection overlay

Streamling describes a freeware app that detects supported music players, displays the track title and artist through a local web server, and can be added as an overlay in OBS or streaming software. Its repository lists YouTube and YouTube Music in browsers among supported sources, and says the overlay transitions or disappears when playback changes, stops, or pauses.

  1. Check the repository for the current download and setup instructions.
  2. Verify that your specific browser and YouTube or YouTube Music playback method are supported by the version you install.
  3. Add the local overlay page as a browser source in OBS and check title, artist, pause, stop, and track-change behavior.
  4. Before using it for an unattended 24/7 broadcast, test browser-source refresh and restart behavior. The repository does not establish long-run uptime or a current release cadence.

Route D: Use a playout platform’s media-library element

If your stream is assembled from a managed media library rather than a browser player, a playout platform may offer a built-in Now Playing element. For example, a vendor help article dated July 9, 2026, describes an element that updates when a new track or video starts and formats title and artist from the media file/library metadata. It recommends correcting file metadata and handling overflow from long titles. This is a platform-specific route, not a general OBS feature; consult the vendor’s current documentation to confirm availability, workflow, and pricing.

Make the overlay readable and dependable

  • Check metadata at the source. Incorrect file tags or playlist/chapter titles will produce incorrect on-screen labels. For managed-library playout, correct the metadata before going live.
  • Plan for long titles. Check whether the chosen overlay scrolls, wraps, or truncates text. Preview unusually long titles against your final background and layout.
  • Decide what viewers see between tracks. Depending on the tool, a pause may hide the label, a stop may clear it, or a closed player may leave the previous title visible. Test your chosen behavior rather than assuming it.
  • Test the whole chain. Confirm that metadata reaches the overlay and the overlay appears in the actual OBS scene. Recheck after restarting the player, receiver, browser source, or OBS.
  • Keep the overlay legible. Use contrast and positioning that work over both quiet and visually busy parts of the lofi video.

No cited tool description establishes uninterrupted operation for 24 hours a day. A successful preview proves the overlay works in that test, not that every player, browser, plugin, or local helper will recover indefinitely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do you need a microphone, webcam, or encoder for the title?

No extra audio or camera hardware is inherently required just to display a track title. YouTube’s encoder guide lists webcams, microphones, and headsets as examples of audio/video equipment to connect when the stream uses them. Choose equipment for the production you want, not as a prerequisite for a now-playing label.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded lofi videos without keeping a computer at home online, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera, and the service streams to YouTube only. A now-playing overlay is a separate concern: choose and test an overlay based on the metadata source and workflow you need.

There is nothing that has to stay on at home; uploaded video is streamed at the quality it was made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
