Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To keep a playlist playing as a YouTube live broadcast, you need two things: a playback or encoder setup that continuously supplies the videos, and the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room so that setup can send its feed to YouTube. The key connects the feed; it does not create a playlist, make it loop, or restart a stopped source.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and plan the source
YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by a streamer who is at least 16 to go live. Its general setup guidance also states limits of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance for the current requirements.

Decide how the playlist will be played before copying a key. A software encoder or hardware encoder can send a feed, but the playlist source and its looping and restart behavior belong to that encoder or playback application. YouTube’s connection instructions do not prescribe a particular unattended playlist player or how it recovers after a power, network, or source interruption. Test those behaviors yourself before relying on continuous operation.

- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room. On the Stream tab, create a stream or select the intended scheduled stream. YouTube may reuse earlier settings and keys, so confirm you have selected the correct stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In the stream settings, copy both values into the encoder’s matching server or URL and key fields. If the encoder offers a YouTube preset, it may fill in the server setting; verify the key and destination before connecting.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not show it in screenshots, recordings, or public configuration. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If someone exposes yours, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; replace the old key in the encoder afterward. See YouTube’s stream-key settings guidance.
- Choose a supported ingest protocol. Use a protocol supported by your encoder and configured for the stream. YouTube documents RTMPS and HLS ingestion. For HLS, use an HLS stream key and the HTTPS ingestion URL; YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Details are in YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.
- Set the playlist as the encoder input. Configure the chosen playback software or connected source to play the intended videos continuously. Confirm that looping is enabled and test what happens when the source or connection stops; those controls vary by application and are not set by the YouTube stream key.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room and verify picture and sound. For a scheduled stream, select Go live when ready. For an immediate stream, follow the live workflow shown in Studio. Check that the watch page is reachable and that stream health is acceptable before leaving it unattended.
Test reliability, bandwidth, and recording separately
- Allow upload headroom. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the total stream bitrate. On a shared network, other traffic can reduce what is available to the encoder. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Test interruption and recovery. If you use a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will work. Also test recovery after the playlist source, encoder, or network is interrupted. YouTube’s connection setup does not establish how a particular player or encoder restarts.
- Monitor the actual broadcast. Check Live Control Room’s preview and audio/video health, confirm viewers can reach the watch page, and inspect any local recording file. A local archive is a separate recording plan, not a consequence of having a stream key.
- Plan for long sessions. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee a complete automatic archive for an always-on broadcast that runs 12 hours or longer. If a complete recording matters, make and test a separate local or other recording plan. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guide.
Troubleshooting an always-on playlist
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | The encoder is not sending to the selected stream, or the URL/key details do not match. | Confirm the selected stream, protocol, stream URL, and key in both Studio and the encoder. Start the encoder and wait for its feed to appear. |
| The preview appears, but the playlist stops or repeats incorrectly | Playlist playback, looping, or restart behavior is controlled by the source application or encoder, not the YouTube key. | Test the playlist locally, verify its loop settings, and simulate an interruption before leaving the setup unattended. |
| Playback is unstable or stream health is poor | Available upload bandwidth may be insufficient or shared with other devices. | Compare available upload capacity with the stream’s total bitrate and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce competing network use or adjust the encoder configuration if needed. |
| The feed stops after a key is exposed | Someone else may be able to use the credential-like key. | Have a channel owner or manager reset the key in Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the replacement. |
| A long broadcast is missing from the archive | YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement covers streams shorter than 12 hours, not a guaranteed complete archive of longer sessions. | For future broadcasts, use and verify a separate recording plan; check any local file rather than assuming the live stream produced a complete archive. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a computer or encoder running at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer can stay off; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
