You can use an iPhone XR for phone-based VR, such as compatible Google Cardboard experiences, if the app and the specific viewer support it. The XR does not make every standalone VR headset into a phone viewer. Before buying, check the viewer’s supported phone dimensions and whether it allows a protective case.
Check compatibility before you start
Apple lists the iPhone XR as 150.9 mm high, 75.7 mm wide and 8.3 mm deep, with a 6.1-inch diagonal display, an accelerometer and a three-axis gyroscope. Those specifications matter because a phone viewer must physically hold the device, and VR content may rely on its motion sensors. See Apple’s iPhone XR technical specifications.

Do not assume a viewer described as “standard” or “Cardboard-compatible” will fit. Google’s overview describes an example enclosure for phones up to 6 inches—smaller than the XR’s 6.1-inch diagonal screen—and cautions that not every viewer works with every phone. That 6-inch figure applies to the example, not to every viewer. Check the exact model’s maximum phone height and width, case clearance and any explicit iPhone XR compatibility information. Also verify that the viewer works with the app or content you intend to use. Google’s iPhone Cardboard guide says iPhones need iOS 8.0 or later and advises checking compatibility with the specific viewer. That requirement does not guarantee that a Cardboard app is currently available to download. The guide is at Set up Google Cardboard on iPhone and iPad.

Set up a compatible phone viewer
Google’s documented Cardboard setup uses a phone-based viewer designed to hold a smartphone. Follow these steps if your viewer and chosen content support the iPhone XR:
- Confirm the viewer’s supported dimensions accommodate the XR. Remove the protective case if the manufacturer requires it.
- Check that the app or content you plan to use supports the viewer and the phone’s sensors.
- Open the Cardboard app on the iPhone, if it is available to you, and follow its pairing instructions. Google describes scanning the viewer’s QR code where applicable.
- Place the iPhone in the viewer, close it securely, and follow the app’s on-screen directions.
If the phone will not fit or the app reports an incompatibility
- The viewer does not close securely: Remove the case only if the viewer instructions permit it. If the phone still does not fit within the stated dimensions, do not force it; use a viewer specified for the XR’s size.
- You see a “device incompatible” message: Check both the viewer’s phone compatibility and the app’s requirements. Google notes that gyroscope availability can affect compatibility; Apple lists a three-axis gyro in the iPhone XR.
- The app cannot be found: The setup instructions do not establish current app availability. Check the App Store and the viewer maker’s compatibility information rather than assuming a particular app can still be downloaded.
- You have a standalone VR headset: The phone-based setup described here applies only to a viewer built to hold a smartphone. It does not establish that an iPhone XR can be inserted into or used with a standalone headset.
What to look for in a viewer
When choosing a Cardboard-style VR viewer or another smartphone VR headset, prioritize explicit iPhone XR support or dimensions that accommodate the phone, including case clearance. Then check lens adjustment and fit, and confirm compatibility with the specific app or content you want. Compatibility varies by viewer; the available guidance does not establish a current ranking or verify a particular commercial model.
