How to Use a Screenshot API with Node.js and Express

Learn the request flow, Express route structure, provider-specific response handling, URL safeguards, error mapping, and a hosted alternative for screenshot capture.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An Express screenshot endpoint accepts a URL from your application’s client, validates it, calls a hosted screenshot API using a server-side API key, then returns either a screenshot URL or image bytes. The provider determines the request format and response shape, so check its current API contract before wiring the result into your route.

How the request flows through Express

  1. A client sends a JSON request containing the page URL to your Express route.
  2. The route checks the input and applies any access or destination policy your application needs.
  3. Your server calls the screenshot provider with its documented authorization header and capture options.
  4. Your route returns the provider’s screenshot URL or relays the returned image bytes.

Keep provider credentials on the server. The documented examples from Screenshot API and RenderScreenshot use bearer authentication; do not put the provider key in browser code or return it in an error response.

Build the Express route

Express includes JSON parsing middleware, and routes are handlers associated with an HTTP method and path. The outline below shows the structure, but it is not a complete production endpoint until you add validation, access control, timeouts, and error handling.

import express from 'express';

const app = express();
app.use(express.json());

app.post('/screenshot', async (req, res, next) => {
  try {
    const { url } = req.body;
    // Validate url and apply your application's access policy here.
    // Call the chosen screenshot provider with server-side credentials.
    // Return the provider's documented URL or image bytes.
  } catch (error) {
    next(error);
  }
});

Express’s middleware guide explains that middleware which does not end the response must call next() to pass control onward; otherwise, the request can hang: Express middleware guide.

  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

Example: request a screenshot URL from Screenshot API

This provider-specific example follows Screenshot API’s documented POST request, bearer header, JSON options, and screenshotUrl result property. Confirm the live contract before relying on it, because provider endpoints and response fields can change.

app.post('/screenshot', async (req, res, next) => {
  try {
    const { url } = req.body ?? {};
    let target;

    try {
      target = new URL(url);
    } catch {
      return res.status(400).json({ error: 'Provide a valid URL.' });
    }

    if (!['http:', 'https:'].includes(target.protocol)) {
      return res.status(400).json({ error: 'Only HTTP and HTTPS URLs are supported.' });
    }

    const apiKey = process.env.SCREENSHOT_API_KEY;
    if (!apiKey) {
      return res.status(500).json({ error: 'Screenshot provider is not configured.' });
    }

    const response = await fetch('https://api.screenshot-api.org/api/v1/screenshot', {
      method: 'POST',
      headers: {
        Authorization: `Bearer ${apiKey}`,
        'Content-Type': 'application/json',
      },
      body: JSON.stringify({
        url: target.href,
        viewport: { width: 1280, height: 720 },
        format: 'png',
        fullPage: true,
      }),
      signal: AbortSignal.timeout(90000),
    });

    if (!response.ok) {
      const status = response.status;
      if (status === 401) return res.status(502).json({ error: 'Screenshot provider rejected its credentials.' });
      if (status === 400) return res.status(400).json({ error: 'The provider rejected the capture request.' });
      if (status === 429) return res.status(429).json({ error: 'Screenshot quota or rate limit reached.' });
      if (status === 502) return res.status(502).json({ error: 'The provider could not render the page.' });
      return res.status(502).json({ error: 'Screenshot provider request failed.' });
    }

    const data = await response.json();
    if (typeof data.screenshotUrl !== 'string' || !data.screenshotUrl) {
      return res.status(502).json({ error: 'Provider response did not include a screenshot URL.' });
    }
    return res.json({ screenshotUrl: data.screenshotUrl });
  } catch (error) {
    if (error.name === 'TimeoutError' || error.name === 'AbortError') {
      return res.status(504).json({ error: 'Screenshot request timed out.' });
    }
    return next(error);
  }
});

The sample uses fetch available in current Node.js releases. If your supported runtime does not provide it, use an HTTP client compatible with that runtime. Set SCREENSHOT_API_KEY in your server environment rather than hard-coding it. The 90-second timeout is an application-side example, not a provider guarantee.

Screenshot API’s documentation describes output format, viewport, full-page capture, selector capture, wait conditions, delay, and timeout options. It also documents 401 for missing or invalid credentials, 400 for invalid requests, 429 for limits or exhausted quota, and 502 for render failures: Screenshot API documentation. The documentation lists its free plan at 60 requests per minute and 500 screenshots per month; verify current limits and plan terms before deployment.

Return a screenshot URL or image bytes

Do not assume all providers return the same kind of response. Screenshot API’s example reads JSON containing screenshotUrl. RenderScreenshot documents binary responses, and its Node.js example writes returned bytes to a file. Screenshot API.net documents direct HTTP capture returning raw image bytes without requiring an SDK.

  • URL response: return a JSON field such as screenshotUrl when the provider documents a URL. Consider whether the URL is temporary or publicly accessible before exposing it to clients.
  • Binary response: read the provider response as an array buffer or buffer, set the correct image content type, and send those bytes from Express. Do not try to parse binary data as JSON.

For a binary provider, the core relay pattern is:

const upstream = await fetch(providerUrl, providerOptions);
if (!upstream.ok) {
  return res.status(502).json({ error: 'Screenshot provider request failed.' });
}
const bytes = Buffer.from(await upstream.arrayBuffer());
res.type('image/png').send(bytes);

Use the actual provider’s documented endpoint, authentication, response content type, and error contract. RenderScreenshot documents PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF output options; do not infer that another provider supports the same formats.

Validate URLs and restrict who can request captures

A route that accepts arbitrary URLs can be abused to make requests on behalf of callers. URL syntax validation alone is not sufficient protection: decide who may call the route, which destinations they may capture, and whether your selected provider blocks risky network targets.

  • Require a parseable URL and allow only http: and https: unless your use case explicitly needs another scheme.
  • Authenticate or rate-limit callers according to your application’s exposure; do not turn an unauthenticated route into a public capture proxy by accident.
  • Apply destination rules appropriate to the service. Screenshot API.net documents refusing private and reserved addresses, including loopback, link-local, and cloud metadata endpoints. That is the behavior of that service, not a universal guarantee across screenshot APIs.
  • Do not rely on a hostname string check alone to prevent private-address access; consult the provider’s documented network safeguards and consider how redirects are handled.

Keep error responses useful but sanitized. A caller can be told that a provider rejected credentials or a render failed without revealing an API key, upstream request headers, or sensitive internal details.

Choose an API by response contract and capture needs

Compare providers on the parts that affect your route: request method and SDK options, URL versus binary result, capture controls, documented error and rate-limit behavior, URL/network restrictions, and the throughput and plan limits you need. The documentation reviewed here does not establish a best-performing provider.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a hosted screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF, so your Express route does not need to operate a browser itself. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

With Node.js, the same endpoint can be called server-side and its response bytes relayed to an Express client:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: process.env.SCREENSHOTNEO_API_KEY, url });
const shot = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`, {
  signal: AbortSignal.timeout(90000),
});
if (!shot.ok) return res.status(502).json({ error: 'Screenshot request failed.' });
res.type(shot.headers.get('content-type') || 'image/webp');
res.send(Buffer.from(await shot.arrayBuffer()));
  • It accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers.
  • An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan.

Operational notes: latency, reliability, and cost

A remote capture requires an upstream rendering request in addition to your client-to-Express request. Set a timeout that fits your application’s response budget, and handle timeout and provider failures separately. The provider documentation cited here does not establish comparative latency, uptime, or screenshot fidelity, so do not promise those outcomes without your own measurements.

  • Check provider status before parsing a successful response; an HTTP error body may not be JSON or image data.
  • Set your application’s own concurrency and rate limits so bursts cannot exhaust provider quotas or overwhelm your endpoint.
  • Measure the actual response type and size for your target pages. Large full-page images can increase memory use when buffered in Express; stream them if your HTTP client and provider contract support streaming.
  • Track provider usage and application errors separately. A rate-limit or quota response should be visible to operators, but return a controlled message to callers.
  • Provider pricing, quotas, SDK support, endpoint behavior, and terms can change. Check current documentation and your actual account plan before choosing capacity.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
401 from provider Missing, invalid, or misconfigured API key. Check the server environment variable and authorization format; never send the secret to the client.
400 from provider Invalid URL or unsupported request option. Validate the submitted URL and compare each field with the provider’s current schema.
429 from provider Rate limit reached or quota exhausted. Review the provider’s current limits and your request volume; apply backoff or queueing as appropriate.
502 or render failure The provider could not render the target or an upstream request failed. Check the target URL, provider status/error body, and whether the provider permits that destination.
Express request hangs A code path neither ends the response nor calls the next middleware, or the upstream call has no effective timeout. Ensure every branch responds or calls next(error); configure a timeout and handle its rejection.
Client receives JSON parse errors The route treated image bytes as JSON, or the provider returned a non-JSON error. Branch on the documented response type and check HTTP status before parsing.
Captured page is blank or incomplete The target may rely on delayed rendering, dynamic content, or inaccessible resources. Use provider-supported wait conditions or delay, and inspect provider verdict/error information where available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should the browser call the screenshot provider directly?

No. Call it from your server so the provider key stays private; expose only your own application route to the client.

Can I return the screenshot as an Express image response?

Yes. If the provider returns binary data, relay the bytes and set the matching content type; if it returns JSON with a screenshot URL, return that documented field instead.
