FFmpeg can stream videos stored remotely only when the machine running FFmpeg can read them as media inputs—through a direct media URL or a mounted or synchronized filesystem path. A cloud folder’s browser page is not necessarily a usable video URL. For a 24/7 YouTube stream, verify access to every file, build a playlist, run FFmpeg on an always-on host, and supervise the process and its connection to YouTube.
Can FFmpeg read a remote video folder?
Sometimes—but “remote folder” can mean different things. FFmpeg needs either a media resource it can open using a protocol enabled in that FFmpeg build, or a filesystem path the host can access. A web page that displays a cloud folder does not, by itself, give FFmpeg access to the videos inside it.

There are two common approaches:
- Direct media URLs: Use a provider’s actual video-object URL if FFmpeg can access it. Check whether it requires authentication, expires, supports seeking or range requests, and remains reachable during playback.
- Mounted or synchronized files: Use a supported client to make remote files available at paths on the streaming host, either through a mount or a local synchronized copy. This adds a client or service to monitor, and may require cache space, credentials, and reconnect handling.
Neither method guarantees reliable playback. Test the specific provider, access method, and files from the machine that will stream. FFmpeg’s protocol support can vary by build; run ffmpeg -protocols on that host to see which protocols are enabled. Its HTTP input options include controls for seekability and reconnection, but the right behavior depends on the endpoint and media.

Make paths and credentials dependable
Before starting a long broadcast, confirm that each video can be opened and played from the streaming host—not just from your own browser. For a mounted or synchronized folder, check that files are available after a host restart, that authentication survives for the intended run, and that the client can reconnect. If the mount uses caching, allow for its disk-space needs. Keep access tokens and YouTube stream keys out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and logs; use the secret-handling features of your host or deployment environment.

Create a fixed playlist
For a known set of files, make a UTF-8 text file on the FFmpeg host, for example playlist.txt, with one valid local path per entry:
file '/mnt/remote-videos/video-01.mp4'
file '/mnt/remote-videos/video-02.mp4'
file '/mnt/remote-videos/video-03.mp4'
This is the concat demuxer’s file-list format. Use paths that are valid from the process’s point of view. If a filename contains a single quote, escape it correctly for the concat file syntax rather than copying the example unchanged.

FFmpeg’s concat mechanisms are not a promise that every collection will join cleanly. Different codecs, timestamps, stream layouts, or audio tracks can cause errors, abrupt changes, or gaps. Test the actual playlist. If the remote folder changes, decide how the playlist will be refreshed and how the running process will learn about new entries; a static playlist does not automatically discover later uploads.
Choose where FFmpeg will run
The host must stay on, reach the media source, and maintain enough outbound capacity to send the encoded stream to YouTube. It could be a local computer, a dedicated computer, or a server. Local hosting gives you direct control but depends on local power, internet, and the machine remaining available. A server may simplify access to remote storage or provide a different network path, but adds administration and provider costs. No particular server or hardware model is established as suitable for every setup.

Hardware needs depend on the workflow. Copying compatible streams can reduce processing, while decoding and re-encoding requires enough compute for the chosen resolution and frame rate. Measure the real workload and check sustained upload capacity before committing to hardware or leaving the stream unattended.
Configure YouTube Live and the FFmpeg output
- Enable live streaming and create a stream. Configure the channel in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube says first-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before a planned launch.
- Copy the ingest details from Control Room. Put the stream URL and stream key into your FFmpeg configuration. Treat the key like a password. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest.
- Choose output settings that match the program and current YouTube guidance. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec that your connection can sustain; do not copy a bitrate without matching those conditions. YouTube’s recommendations can change, so consult its current encoder-settings guidance when configuring the stream.
- Test the output before going unattended. Preview it in Live Control Room, test movement and audio like the actual program, and check stream health and messages. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom in its streaming tips; treat that as platform guidance, not a measured guarantee for your connection.
The exact FFmpeg options depend on the input files and output choices. This template shows the shape of an H.264/AAC transcode from a prepared local playlist; set the variables to values supported by the current YouTube guidance for your selected output, and test the result before using it continuously:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -r "$FPS" -g "$((2 * FPS))"
-b:v "$VIDEO_BITRATE" -maxrate "$VIDEO_BITRATE"
-bufsize "$BUFFER_SIZE" -c:a aac -b:a "$AUDIO_BITRATE"
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
Here, FPS, VIDEO_BITRATE, BUFFER_SIZE, and AUDIO_BITRATE must be set for the intended output; the ingest URL and key must be the values from your Control Room configuration. The two-second GOP shown by -g assumes a constant frame rate and uses twice the frame rate as the keyframe interval in frames. Confirm the resulting interval and all encoder parameters in a test. This example re-encodes video and audio; it is not a universal command for every playlist or endpoint.
If the source streams already match the desired ingest settings, stream copy may reduce CPU load, but only use it after validating the actual files and transitions. If they do not match, or the concat inputs cannot be joined as-is, re-encoding or a different playlist strategy may be necessary. Do not assume that a command which opens successfully will produce seamless transitions or recover properly from a storage interruption.

Keep a 24/7 process observable and recoverable
A continuous broadcast is a long-running encoder process, not simply a playlist setting. Decide what should happen when a file read fails, the mount disconnects, authentication expires, the network drops, or YouTube rejects the ingest. A supervisor can restart FFmpeg after an exit, but it needs an intentional policy: retry the current file, advance, restart the playlist, or alert someone. Test that recovery path deliberately. YouTube’s live-event advice about backup encoders and local archives can inform operational planning, but does not make a second FFmpeg process fail over automatically.
Monitor the video and audio continuously, along with the host and storage path. Useful checks include:
- FFmpeg process status and logs, including failed reads and encoder errors.
- Remote-storage availability, credential expiry, cache or disk exhaustion, and reconnect behavior.
- Outbound network stability and YouTube ingest status in Live Control Room.
- Whether the intended playlist is still playing and whether audio and video remain present and in sync.
Choose the access and hosting approach that fits
| Choice | What to evaluate | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Direct media URL or mounted/synchronized files | Authentication, URL expiry, seeking and range support, latency, caching, file discovery, and reliability. | Direct URLs avoid a mount layer but can have provider-specific access limits or expiring credentials. A mount or sync presents familiar paths but adds a client, cache, and availability concerns. |
| Local computer or server | Uptime, power and network reliability, upload route, storage access, compute needs, and administration. | A local host is directly controllable but relies on local conditions. A server may suit a remote-storage workflow, but requires provider configuration and costs. No provider has been evaluated here. |
| Stream copy or re-encode | Input codec compatibility, output requirements, transition behavior, compute load, and quality. | Stream copy can reduce processing if the source already fits. Re-encoding can normalize output but needs sufficient compute. Validate real files either way. |
| One long process or supervised restarts | Failure recovery, playlist refresh, transitions, monitoring, and credential protection. | A single process is simpler until it fails. Supervision can restart it, but needs a tested policy to avoid repeated failures, skipped files, or exposed secrets. |
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg cannot open a remote URL: The link may be a folder webpage rather than a media object, may require authentication, or may use a protocol unavailable in this FFmpeg build. Test a direct media resource from the streaming host; otherwise use a supported mount or synchronization method.
- A file opens but playback stalls or fails while seeking: The endpoint, mount, or container may not support the access pattern FFmpeg needs, or remote latency may be high. Test that file and access method specifically, including seeking and reconnects; try a local synchronized copy if the remote path is unsuitable.
- The playlist stops at the end or repeats unexpectedly: Check that the concat list contains the intended paths and that the input is configured to loop. Confirm the process is still running and review its logs rather than assuming the folder itself updates the playlist.
- Transitions have gaps, errors, or missing audio: The files may have incompatible streams, timestamps, or audio layouts. Validate them together and use a compatible output workflow; test changes before returning to a 24/7 run.
- YouTube shows poor stream health or drops the ingest: Check the output settings against current YouTube guidance, verify upload capacity with headroom, and inspect Control Room messages and FFmpeg logs. Confirm that the ingest URL and key are current and correctly configured.
- The stream does not recover after a remote-storage interruption: Check the mount or sync client, authentication, and cache state, then confirm the supervisor’s retry policy. Test recovery intentionally; a process restart alone may not restore the failed input.
Protect the channel and the videos
Only stream videos and audio you have the rights to use, including music, footage, and other included material. A 24/7 loop does not make copyrighted material safe to broadcast. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from whether FFmpeg can play the files; confirm that your content complies with YouTube’s current rules, including its reused-content policies where monetization is relevant. Avoid promising that repeated or prerecorded content will qualify for monetization.
