For a 24/7 monsoon-rain stream, start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 with CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo at 128 Kbps, and Rec. 709. Choose a video bitrate within YouTube’s 5–14 Mbps recommendation for 1080p30, then test the full setup on the connection and computer that will run it. If upload or encoding performance is unreliable, try 720p30 at a bitrate within YouTube’s 3–8 Mbps recommendation instead.
There is no single bitrate that suits every rain video, PC, or Indian internet connection. Source detail, motion, overlays, network congestion, and encoder performance all matter. The reliable setting is the one that passes a representative test and stays healthy over time.

OBS labels and available encoder choices can vary by version, operating system, and hardware. Set the equivalent values in OBS’s output, video, audio, and stream settings; don’t assume a particular menu label or encoder option will appear on every computer.

Choose resolution and bitrate for the connection you have
When 1080p30 makes sense
Use 1080p30 if the rain footage benefits from its detail and the computer can encode it while the internet connection sustains the chosen bitrate. YouTube recommends 5–14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. The recommendation is a range, not an instruction to stream at 14 Mbps. Try a moderate value within it, then check the stream preview, stream health, and OBS dropped frames during a representative test.
When to step down to 720p30
If upload capacity fluctuates, other people share the connection, or OBS cannot encode consistently at 1080p, test 1280×720 at 30 fps. YouTube recommends 3–8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30. Select a bitrate within that range and repeat the same full-path test. A stable lower-resolution stream is preferable to a higher-resolution stream that repeatedly buffers or disconnects.

Rain can look visually static, but fine details, moving leaves, changing scenes, text overlays, and audio peaks affect the actual workload. Test with the exact video, sound, and overlays you intend to use rather than assuming rain footage always needs less bitrate.

Configure and test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Check upload at the streaming location and operating time. Run a realistic upload-speed test when the stream is likely to be live. Download speed does not establish how much upload capacity is available.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% spare upload capacity beyond the total stream bitrate. Treat this as platform guidance, not a stability guarantee: congestion and other users on the connection can reduce available capacity.
- Set the output profile. In OBS, set the intended resolution and frame rate, H.264 with CBR, a tested bitrate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Configure AAC stereo and a consistent 44.1 kHz stereo audio sample rate, plus Rec. 709 for SDR.
- Use RTMPS and verify the YouTube destination. Select the intended scheduled stream and privacy setting in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that OBS has the correct stream key; keep the key private and reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Test the complete path. Start a test with the intended footage, rain audio, overlays, encoder, network, and YouTube Live Control Room preview. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch both OBS and YouTube. Check stream health and the OBS dropped-frames counter during the test. A brief successful start does not show that the setup will remain stable unattended.
Keep an unattended local stream running
OBS on a local PC depends on that PC, its power, and the internet connection staying available. A UPS for the computer and network equipment may bridge a brief power cut, but the required capacity and runtime depend on the load. It will not protect against an internet outage, and it does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming. Consider how you will notice and recover from a power, network, or software interruption before leaving the stream unattended.

Troubleshoot common problems
- OBS dropped frames are increasing, and the connection indicator is yellow or red: OBS Project says this indicates an unstable connection to the streaming service or a connection that cannot keep up with the set bitrate. Reduce bitrate, investigate the network path and competing upload use, or test at 720p30.
- YouTube stream health reports trouble: Recheck the available upload capacity and leave the recommended headroom. Test again with the same video and audio; a speed test alone does not verify the OBS-to-YouTube path.
- The stream starts but degrades when scenes change: Test the most demanding footage, motion, and overlays. If the PC cannot sustain encoding, choose an encoder it can maintain or lower output resolution and test again.
- Viewers report buffering despite a successful preview: Try normal latency if you had selected a lower-latency mode, and check the network for changing capacity or congestion. Lower latency can increase buffering and makes ingestion problems affect viewers more.
- The wrong broadcast appears or OBS will not connect: Verify the scheduled stream, privacy setting, and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room. If the key may have been compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- The stream stops during a power cut: A UPS may help with a brief interruption if sized for the computer and network equipment, but it cannot keep the stream online through an internet outage.
Choose latency based on whether you need interaction
For a rain ambience stream where chat interaction is not time-sensitive, normal latency is a sensible default. YouTube’s current latency guidance, accessed in 2026, says most viewers typically experience less than 10 seconds of delay with low latency and less than five seconds with ultra-low latency. Lower latency can increase buffering, so use it only when faster audience interaction is worth that trade-off.
