The Pi itself has no built-in 3.5 mm audio jack, so plan on a suitable DAC or another supported audio output. The “best” kitchen setup depends on the equipment you already own and the playback software you choose.
Start with the speakers and amplifier you already have
Before choosing parts, identify whether your speakers are passive or active and what inputs your system accepts. A DAC converts digital audio into an analogue line-level signal; it does not provide the power needed to drive passive speakers.

- Passive speakers: They need a power amplifier. If you already have a receiver or amplifier, connect a DAC’s line output to an available input. If not, choose an amplifier solution rather than a line-output DAC alone.
- Active speakers: They contain amplification and may accept a line-level DAC output. Check that the DAC’s output connector matches the speakers’ input.
- Existing system with RCA or another line input: A line-output DAC can feed that input. Raspberry Pi describes its DAC+ line output as variable analogue 0–2 V RMS and suitable for an existing hi-fi preamp or amplifier, or for active speakers.
Raspberry Pi’s audio HAT documentation distinguishes line-output DACs from amplifier hardware. Its DigiAMP+ documentation describes speaker terminals for passive stereo speakers, with a stated specification of 2 × 25 W speakers. That is a product specification, not an independent measurement of performance in a particular room or setup.

The Zero 2 W does not have a built-in 3.5 mm audio jack. Raspberry Pi documents USB and HDMI audio as platform options, as well as Bluetooth audio on models equipped with Bluetooth. The appropriate option is the one that matches your system’s inputs and the player software’s device support.

| Output route | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| GPIO DAC HAT | A receiver, amplifier, or active speakers that accept the HAT’s line output | The Zero 2 W’s standard 40-pin GPIO header is unpopulated. Check whether your board has a soldered header before buying a HAT. |
| GPIO amplifier HAT | Passive speakers when you need amplification on the Pi | Confirm speaker wiring and the amplifier HAT’s specifications. This is a different function from a line-output DAC. |
| USB DAC | A system with a matching analogue input and a compatible USB audio device | Raspberry Pi says its models support USB audio, but check that your chosen DAC works with the player software. |
| HDMI audio | An audio receiver or display setup that accepts audio over HDMI | Confirm the receiving equipment accepts the relevant HDMI audio connection; the Zero 2 W uses mini HDMI. |
| Bluetooth audio | A Bluetooth-capable receiving device, when wireless playback suits the setup | Confirm that the player software supports the intended Bluetooth audio route and that the receiving device has a suitable input or speakers. |
The Zero 2 W model documentation lists 512MB RAM, 2.4 GHz single-band 802.11n Wi-Fi (35 Mb/s), Bluetooth 4.2, microSD storage, and mini HDMI. It distinguishes the standard board with an unpopulated 40-pin GPIO header from a header-equipped variant. A HAT that relies on GPIO therefore may require a header-equipped board or soldering a header to the standard board.
Check moOde’s Zero 2 W limitations before choosing it
moOde describes itself as free, open-source music-streamer software for Raspberry Pi. Its setup guide calls for a 64-bit Raspberry Pi and at least 16GB of boot media, and recommends high-quality media. Check the current guide before installation, because software requirements can change.

The guide specifically identifies the Zero 2 W as a 512MB device. It says that building or installing the Spotify Connect package on demand is unsupported on 512MB devices because of insufficient RAM, while a prebuilt package can be installed. It also warns that the local-display WebUI will not load on these devices because Chromium needs more RAM. These are important constraints if you expect to use those particular features; they do not establish that every other moOde function is unavailable.

- Check the speakers. If they are passive, identify the amplifier that will power them. If they are active, find the line-level input and connector they accept.
- Check the source input. Look for an unused RCA or other line input on an existing amplifier, or confirm whether the receiving equipment supports USB, HDMI, or Bluetooth audio.
- Choose the corresponding output. For a GPIO HAT, verify the board’s header status. For a USB DAC, verify both the connector and player-software compatibility. Avoid treating a line-output DAC as a substitute for an amplifier.
- Confirm the software fit. If using moOde, review its current 64-bit and boot-media requirements and account for the documented 512MB-device limitations.
- Buy only what is missing. You may need only the Pi and boot media if your existing audio system already provides the required input and amplification. Add a DAC or amplifier only when the signal chain requires one.
Raspberry Pi says its models support USB audio and documents HDMI audio and Bluetooth audio as platform routes in its getting-started documentation. That platform support does not by itself verify a specific DAC, playback application, streaming service, or account arrangement. Confirm compatibility for the exact hardware and software combination you plan to use.
