The exact software and loop command depend on the Pi model and installed operating system; YouTube’s encoder settings are documented, but the available evidence does not establish one tested, universal Raspberry Pi setup. Test the complete configuration before relying on it for a long broadcast.
What the Raspberry Pi does—and what it does not
The Pi needs to perform two distinct jobs: play the VOD repeatedly, then encode and transmit that playback as a live stream. Video decoding and video encoding are not the same task. A board may be able to decode a video format without having equivalent hardware encoding capability.

Model and encoding path matter. Raspberry Pi 5 has a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder, but that is not evidence it can hardware-encode an equivalent stream. Raspberry Pi’s published H.264 comparison documents software encoding with libx264 on Pi 5 and a hardware-encoding configuration on Pi 4. Those configurations do not prove that every Pi can sustain every resolution and frame rate; validate the actual combination of board, software, and output settings.
Recommended Free Tools
Before you start
- A Raspberry Pi and compatible Raspberry Pi OS installation, with enough storage for the VOD.
- A video file you made or have permission to livestream, including its gameplay, music, overlays, and other included material.
- A playback-and-encoder application compatible with your board and OS. The exact current application, package version, and loop command are not established here, so check the software’s current documentation rather than copying an unverified command.
- A stable internet connection with upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate, plus some headroom for other network use.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours: YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
Configure the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, then choose an ingestion protocol and stream key using YouTube’s current live-stream setup flow: YouTube stream settings.
- Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast on your channel.
- Select RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP: YouTube live encoder settings.
Choose a playback and encoding setup
Configure your software to play the local VOD continuously and send that playback—not a camera feed—to the encoder. The app must support both repeating local media and streaming to YouTube; confirm how it handles the end of a file, audio, and interruptions in the software documentation. No single Pi model, application, or command has been established as a universally tested recipe.

Start with an output mode the board can encode reliably. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, but your chosen encoder must support the protocol and codec you select. Its published H.264 guidance includes these recommended bitrates:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube service recommendations, not a promise that a particular Pi can encode the setting smoothly. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe every 2 seconds; do not exceed a 4-second interval. Check the encoder’s output settings against YouTube’s current encoder guidance, then test with representative gameplay motion and audio. A static menu is not a useful substitute for a high-motion scene when checking for dropped frames or encoding strain.

Test the loop before a public or extended broadcast
- Begin with an unlisted or private test where appropriate for your channel and planned audience.
- Start playback and streaming from the Pi, then open the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the video is moving, the audio is present and in sync, and the stream appears on the intended channel or watch page.
- Watch the stream-health information while representative footage plays. YouTube advises testing with comparable movement and audio and monitoring quality; passing a short preview does not establish unattended reliability for a much longer run.
- Test the actual duration and conditions you expect to use. Check that playback returns to the start of the file, and decide how you will respond to power, network, storage, or software-process failures. Automatic restart or recovery depends on the chosen Pi software and configuration; it is not established for a universal setup.
Rights and monetization are separate questions
Permission to livestream the VOD and eligibility to monetize it are not interchangeable. Clear the gameplay, music, overlays, and other third-party material for livestream use. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may replace the output with a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if detected material remains. If you have a license, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel in Content ID. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
For monetization, check the game publisher’s commercial-use terms as well as YouTube policy. YouTube says simply showing gameplay or software for extended periods may not be accepted for monetization; its game guidance describes commentary tied to the live action that provides instructional or educational value as a relevant factor: YouTube guidance on monetizing game content.

A repetitive loop can also be a channel-level monetization concern. YouTube’s inauthentic-content policy says channels whose videos feel interchangeable may not monetize, and applies its monetization policies to livestreams. This does not establish that every loop is prohibited, but it does mean a creator should not assume repeated footage qualifies. If the VOD belongs to someone else, reused-content review is distinct from copyright permission: YouTube also considers whether substantial original commentary, modification, or value has been added. See YouTube channel monetization policies.
Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, any live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and whether first-time live access is still being enabled.
- The encoder cannot connect: Confirm the stream URL, selected protocol, and key. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The stream connects but video stutters or drops frames: Check encoder load and network upload capacity. Reduce resolution or frame rate, or use a lower-bitrate mode supported by your software; then test again with fast-moving gameplay.
- The video works but audio is missing or wrong: Check the playback application’s audio output and the encoder’s selected audio source, then verify audio in Live Control Room preview before going public.
- The loop stops at the end of the VOD: Verify the player is configured to repeat the local file and test that behavior through the encoder. Loop controls and failure recovery vary by application.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the stream: Review the live copyright notice and verify that all included material is cleared for livestreaming. Licensed material may require the rights holder to allowlist your channel in Content ID.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream rather than specifically running it on a Pi, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. India customers can pay by UPI or card. To try it, start a StreamNeo free day.
