Set up membership badges and custom emoji in YouTube Studio’s channel Memberships area. Once enabled, badges identify members beside their names in comments and live chats, while members can use creator-uploaded emoji in comments on your videos and in live chat. These are ordinary YouTube membership features: YouTube does not document a separate setup mode or guarantee for a stream that runs 24/7.
What badges and custom emoji do in live chat
A membership badge appears next to a member’s channel name in comments and live chats on the channel they joined. YouTube describes it as a public-facing indicator of membership, including paid membership tenure. Custom emoji are images the creator uploads; members can use them in comments on the channel’s videos and in that channel’s live chats. They are channel-specific, not a universal YouTube perk.

YouTube documents these as standard channel membership benefits, not features with special 24/7 behavior. A continuously running stream does not change how a creator configures badges or emoji, and YouTube’s help guidance does not promise uninterrupted availability of either feature for a 24/7 stream.
Before setup: confirm memberships are available
Channel memberships are not available to every creator or viewer in every location. Check YouTube’s current membership eligibility and availability guidance and the policies it links to. The instructions below assume memberships are enabled for your channel. Viewers also need to be in a location where they can purchase memberships.

Keep badge and emoji configuration separate from decisions about membership levels and other perks. YouTube allows up to six membership levels, with one to five perks per level; higher levels inherit perks from lower ones. Perks vary by channel, so do not assume every channel offers custom art or members-only chat.
Set up membership badges
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Memberships. In the channel’s Studio, open the Memberships area to manage membership benefits. YouTube may change navigation labels, so use the current Studio layout if the path differs.
- Open Loyalty badges. Choose default badges, custom badges, or a mix, then add or manage badge artwork using the controls shown there.
- Plan a clear tenure sequence. YouTube’s listed paid-membership stages are new, 1 month, 2 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, and 5 years. Use the available stages to make progression understandable rather than relying on tiny visual differences.
- Prepare artwork to the published requirements. Badges must be JPEG or PNG, under 1 MB, and at least 32 × 32 pixels. They render at 14 × 14 pixels in comments and the Posts tab, and 16 × 16 pixels in live chat, so use simple, high-contrast shapes that remain recognizable when small.
The technical requirements above are from YouTube Help; its page does not display a publication year. Check the current badge and emoji specifications before finalizing assets in case the limits or Studio controls have changed.

Upload custom emoji for members
- Open Memberships in YouTube Studio and find the emoji controls. Custom emoji are not present by default; the creator must upload them.
- Choose an emoji family name. Members use this name to autocomplete your emoji in live chat. Pick a short, distinctive name that is easy to remember and type.
- Upload emoji artwork in a supported format and size. YouTube prefers JPEG, PNG, or GIF under 1 MB, with dimensions from 48 × 48 pixels (preferred) up to 480 × 480 pixels. GIF files display as a static image, not as animation.
- Check the result at chat size. Emoji render at 24 × 24 points on mobile and most monitors. Retina and HiDPI displays may show them at 48 × 48 pixels or higher. Keep silhouettes and details bold enough to read at small sizes.
- Use the available slots deliberately. YouTube’s documented emoji-slot table starts at four emoji with zero members and reaches 54 slots at 5,000 or more members, with intermediate thresholds on its help page. These are platform limits, not a guarantee that any one channel will have a particular number of slots; verify your current allowance in Studio and YouTube Help.
YouTube says all members can use creator-uploaded emoji regardless of membership level. By contrast, a channel may offer other benefits selectively by level, so review the perk configuration if you intend a separate tier-specific benefit.

What members see and how live chat limits apply
After the creator enables the benefits, members can use their badge and available emoji on that channel’s video comments and live chats. Joining one channel does not grant the badges or emoji of another channel. YouTube’s general live-chat guidance says chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players; viewers may send up to 11 messages every 30 seconds, and each message is limited to 200 characters. Those are general chat rules, not separate limits on badges or custom emoji. See YouTube’s live stream and live chat guidance.

Choose an approach that fits your channel
| Choice | Best fit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Default badges | Creators who want a low-effort tenure marker. | Less distinctive channel identity than custom artwork. |
| Custom badges | Channels with recognizable symbols that stay legible at chat size. | Requires artwork that reads clearly at 16 × 16 pixels in live chat and upkeep if the visual system changes. |
| A mix of default and custom badges | Creators who want a branded start or selected milestones while retaining familiar stages. | Keep the sequence visually coherent so members can understand progression. |
| One membership level | A simple offer where the same core perks apply to all members. | Fewer ways to differentiate benefits. |
| Multiple levels | Creators who want to organize different perks into tiers. | Higher levels inherit lower-tier perks, so plan the complete set rather than treating each tier as isolated. |
YouTube does not publish comparative performance results for these choices. Judge them by artwork effort, legibility at small render sizes, tenure coverage, member comprehension, and how much ongoing upkeep you want.
Common problems and fixes
- Memberships or Memberships controls are missing: Check channel eligibility, location availability, and YouTube’s membership policies. The feature is not available to every creator in every location.
- Emoji do not appear in chat: Confirm that you uploaded them in Studio and that memberships are enabled. Custom emoji are not available by default, and only members can use the uploaded emoji.
- A GIF does not animate: This is expected; YouTube displays GIF emoji as static images.
- Artwork is rejected or unclear: Recheck file format, file size, and dimensions against YouTube Help. For badges, consider the 14 × 14 and 16 × 16 pixel render sizes; for emoji, inspect the result at chat size.
- Viewers cannot see live chat: Confirm they are watching on a YouTube watch page rather than an embedded player. YouTube says Live Chat is not available on embedded players.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 stream plays uploaded videos, StreamNeo can keep it live on YouTube from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Membership badges and emoji remain YouTube channel features configured in Studio; StreamNeo does not add or change those benefits.
